thanks for the fb info I found it. yea Yes I am in San Bernardino. Who is your sailor navynana? This is my sons first real deployment so I am getting used to this stuff and getting ready to send him a package. Do all three ships have the same FPO address?

Hi Michelle, is your son a boatswain mate?

Navynana, just go to any post office and ask for the apo/fpo flat rate boxes. They will give you as many as you want. Also ask for the custom forms. Its so much easier to have the box sealed and the customs form started when you go to have it mailed. I've mailed SO many things to my hubby and its super easy :)

getting on base has always been a pain but certianly understandable. Maybe our Onbudsman can assist when the time nears.

Are the FPO/APO boxes totally different than the priority boxes? I may have misunderstood. So they are $2 less to mail than priority? always appreciate the info.

august was y daughters pir she wore whites and could not wait to get to the hotel and get in jeans lol there are plenty of hotels around the base and i will be able to stay at their apartment that my son in law will be getting the only problem i see is that you have to a decal for your vehicle to be allowed on base and the sailor has to be there to get that so am not quite sure how that will work my son in law can get on base he has military id so if we use his sisters car that they borrowed whilst they were living in sd that has a decal so we will be able to get on base no problems! the ombudsman i have dealt with several times and have been really helpful and quick to respond

I just picked up a bunch of boxes and the FPO/APO boxes which cost $2 less than the normal priority and a bunch of the customs forms so i can have them ready when i go to the post office

my grandson graduated in April and was in dress blues. I think in May they switch to white and back to blue in Oct.

I was under the impression that the time of the year made a difference in what uniform they could wear,  not sure if that applies to ship returns or not.    Oct was winter for my son's PIR and he was in dress blues.

@ccNavymom   last time out "we" had about a month's notice of a tentative return date..but that of course was subject to the Navy's needs and of course the working condition of the ship at the time.  as time got closer they were able to tell us a better date but we did not know the expected actual pull in time until the night before.  The ombudsman were very helpful with that info and they even had a sign making party for us.   They were also helpful with hotel ideas, do & don'ts and what "paperwork" you would need to get on the base, etc.  I have not spoken/written the new ones yet, but I'm hoping they will be as good if not better if info to us.

Yes a customs form is required on ALL mail going to any  FPO/APO address.. no matter where they are at the time.  I don't go into a lot of detail on them, just general items... like processed food and snacks, clothing, magazines, etc.   I would not list specific things like I-pod or anything of real value.   The post office is supposed to be safe but why take the chance? . There are alot of people in & out of the Navy that are less than trustworthy.   Things are stolen from the sailors on or off the ships.   The other thing I would advise of ...is  totally fill the boxes. You can get 2 sizes of boxes from the post office that are flat rate box..that go cheaper to FPO/APO addresses.   (there are lots of sizes but only the 2 are cheaper).  Fill them up so there is no room for shifting of contents, crushing of sides etc. I use individual wrapped candy like tootsie rolls, starbursts, jolly ranchers, etc. rogers etc as packing rather than styrofoam peanuts.  They will enjoy the packing as well that way. I've heard of people using real air popped popping corn, even stale some of them enjoy it.
