Thanks for the update and ideas of what else to send in care packages. Hopefully they are all well and will enjoy time in 'port' !

Hello All, Really appreciate the information. Have not heard from my grandson, but as some of the others, it's no surprise. He's a guy. We hope he's doing ok. I'm sure he'll text his mom when he gets in port. That ship is 40 years old I think and they have had some issues with it before. I bet they'd be happy to stay in port a while longer. Some of his friends from boot camp are stationed there. Tell

Bridgette thanks and keep us up to date. Will check in tomorrow.

OK another update Just chatted with Bridgette on fb they wont make it to port tomorrow weather is bad so ship is rocking and rolling she hates it lol  Bridgette also said that there is a lotof little things wrong with the ship may stay longer in port to get fixed.  And the marine chefs food is not bad she said, and yes you are only allowed to eat at  the assigned times but they do have food and drink machines as well as the store.  She is going to try and get back on fb later!  And no more seasickness and is working really hard but is sleeping great!  Anyone have any questions if they have not heard from their sailor!

They have a microwave in the galley which they can use i sent daughter some of her favorite ravioli in a tin used to send this toher at A school plus a ton of other stuff!  Which if she has not enough room she can share with her buddies!  And i think i said before they has a shop on board and they can buy all kinds of junk food and its cheaper than on shore

I don't hear from my son as much as I would like, even on shore, so I look forward to the shared info from this site.

During the last "cruise",  one of the things that my son did ask for was canisters of kool aid or packets.  some of the work area have small fridges that they can chill stuff.  He also ask for a container to make the drink into if I sent the cheaper canisters instead of the individual packets.   He also ask for the wet wipes,  it gets really warm on the ship and they don't always get regular shower time and the water making equipment has been known to have "issues".   Don't send anything that might melt, or has a short shelf life.  Some work "shops" have access to microwaves. He also ask for micro meals/ "Easy Mac" etc.  If they don't come in a container that they can "cook" in, maybe send stuff packed in cheap plastic containers that they can "nuke" and reuse.  They don't always get time or opportunity to get to the chow hall when they are serving.  Keep in mind a customs label is required for anything you send to a FPO address no matter where they are and as they are out with a group of ships the Mail bags go to the larger "flag ship" first and then are sent to the smaller ships when they get a chance..so it may take 3-6 weeks to get their boxes.  For some reason boxes usually made it thru faster/better than any envelope I sent him.

Thanks for the idea of gatorade packets -- I was wondering about those. Got some girl scout cookies today and plan on getting a few other things for the next package. I hope they do share -then everyone can have a treat !! Haven't heard a word from my son since early Tues - so I hope he is okay -- hopefully just busy!
Comment by Cheryl on February 27, 2011 at 5:58pm

Have got several emails from my son also. Yes, they do like their packages with their snacks and protein bars. However, they also put them out and share with others in their division or that is what they do in my son's division. Because, there are some sailors that don't receive any packages at all. So, I try to make sure that I send something different each time. They usually like kool-aid and gator aid packets, razors, socks, underwear and pictures of their family and pets.

OK update got whole bunch of emails and she was on fb this morning first one 3.54am as i have changed phones to iphone took me awhile to read it lol and find it lol

She said couple days out she was seasick and got pills and is feeling better and thaat cranking is really busy i guess with all the marines onboard and they give a lot of smart ass remarks to her and the other females working in the galley so I told her "take no crap from them"  and she will be able to call tomorrow when they get to port yea so excited to be able to talk emails and fb not quite the same as calls but i will take whatever i can get!!!

@kab I have a ton of pics if you want to see more

And yes they only get three meals but they have shop on board where they can buy stuff also but there is plenty of food as long as the marines dont get there first you would not believe how much they eat when on board i saw their plates man!  I guess they need there protein! lol

Yes i am going to send 2nd care package off tomorrow!  Would like her to get 1 a week or more and if its too much for her she can share with her buddies!!
