I'm so disappointed that my Christmas boxes didn't get to my son! I sent them out in plenty of time (at least I thought so). I will learn.

Hi Kmarie! I agree with Debbie. This is my son's second deployment on the USS De Wert and he told us to send food items.  I also try to include a roll of toilet paper about every other box. I have known it to take more than 2 months for them to get a package so I don't send homemade items anymore. Last deployment my box of homemade coffeecake and cookies sat on a dock in the Middle East for about 2 months and was NASTY when he finally got it.  My son loves Little Debbie snacks and the microwavable soups and pastas so that's what we are sending. He's also enjoying some books, magazines and puzzle books we have sent. Whatever he can't use - he shares. Sunscreen, work gloves and chapped stick are some things he has specifically asked for.

Dgreagan thank you very much for attaching the articles and pics of the rescue they did back in November!  Those were great!!

Kmarie Hi. This is also my son's first deployment. I usually send him a package at least once a month and so does his grandmother so we try to send at different times. It has been taking 4weeks for him to get s package. It seems he usually gets them when he goes to port. The last time I sent him his package I had so much I had to send two. I had part of his Christmas gift included. Mostly I send goodies beef jerky, slim jims. Pop corn. Pringles. Granola bars peanutbutter crackers. I do not send chocolate or anything that will melt or go stale. I did send him sunglasses and a cellphone with no problems. Those I did insure. You can send the large postal boxes at a reduced price when sending to the fpo address. You can order them on line for the military. As far as going to port we do not know. Security ....

Anything I can help with I will. As I said before this is my sons first deployment as well.

Hello proud USS Dewert families, my son Is on his first deployment. The experience is all new. Can anyone give suggestions as to items that send in care packages. Any good suggestions and things to avoid?

Also, how often do they go to port?

Thanks,
Kmarie

How long will it take for the guys on the ship to find out if they advanced and let us know. Do they tell them immediately or what?

Just in case you don't know, the USS DeWert was the first on the scene of an Italian ship that had been taken over by pirates. An article is in the NY Post under US World News. Yeah DeWert!!
