Well ladies.....my reading of comments here just got interupted by my call from Thailand!!!! Yippee :-) Dang it cfsnow, Sue and Kathy......if I find out who your sailors are, I can issue some butt kickings while I'm there if you like!! }:( I think it helps that my sailor is a little older, and a little more sensitive to the fact that moms have feeling also. I know that when she was 18, she wasn't NEARLY as in tune with that. A few years makes a big difference I think. Her and her boyfriend and a bunch were heading out to ride elephants. He had done the go-cart thing a couple of days ago, and like someone said earlier here, it was pretty wild.
ginnylynn.........CONGRATS!!!! You must be SO proud!! It is awesome, that the Navy notified you, so you could bask in his honor!!! I think guys especially tend to down play those things.......but not us moms!!! I also have a child that had to fight and claw for every "C" she got in school (not my sailor), and like you said....to see them be in a position to excel despite struggles is SUCH a wonderful feeling :-) :-)

Woo-hoo, Ginnlynn, that is fantastic news about your son's achievement. BZ to him!! I love to read about young people finding their place and excelling. You definitely have reason to be proud of him.

Mary, when I have traveled overseas, I would use my debit card at a local ATM to withdraw funds in the local currency. Yes, I did pay a fee but it was less that I would pay to exchange money at a local currency exchange place. They can get quite pricey in some places. He does need to be careful not to withdraw too much or he will have to pay to exchange it back again. I would think that some place like Navy Federal Credit Union would have relatively reasonable rates since so many of their members do travel abroad.

My daughter called last night from her hotel room. I told her to check out some of the old temples, maybe she'll find one dedicated to the Siamese cat, and she could pay homage to it, lol (we have a couple of Siamese). The cats think we should, of course! :p

yep abc.....once you are in Japan, your family would probably LOVE it if you get a Magic Jack, so you can stay in touch from so far away, but I know that when they are in home port, they usually have pretty good cell plans for that :-)
Comment by abc815 on October 3, 2010 at 11:39pm
mollie, you can use magic jack anywhere through a computer w/ internet connection. it'll save you tons of money, but as far as quality, if the connection is bad, not sure if it'll help much. not sure tho! i may have to buy one myself!

hola ladies! hope everyone's weekend has been fabulous and that everyone has had a chance to hear from their loved ones! i got a short phone call from my sailor who was stuck working on the ship, but he is NOW getting his liberty, so hopefully we can skype soon. i'm going to assume his internet connection will suck as well...just as it did in the phillipines! :( i can't wait to talk to him without worrying about how much the call is costing.

ps- welcome to the group, panny! :)

Brandy...can he use Magic Jack from hotel rooms? If that is an option, I'll certainly be purchasing one for my sailor before they go out on the 2011 cruise!!
Stephsmom.....haven't heard of anyones debit cards being blocked. That is gonna be the pits for these kids if that's the case. Maybe it's only Armed Forces Bank. Lots of the kids use Navy Federal I think. Mine uses her BofA. Hopefully Steph has friends that will lend her $ to enjoy herself with, until this gets straightened out! I know that when Kelcie lost her card one time, everybody was willing to "carry her" until she got a new one and could pay them back. I would HATE to see anybody miss a fun time in port because of some silly bank imposed rule. They may think that they are watching out for military personel, but they ought to pre-warn them, so they can be prepared.
Yep, go cart racing and Elephant riding seem to be the "big draws" in Thailand :-) :-)

Vicky, Kelcie's emails were also "messed up" for a few days before they ported. I haven't talked to her yet, but I know that she got a small window of liberty the 1st day. I think that she will get extended liberty starting today, so hope to get a call within the next day or so.
Panny.....welcome aboard the GW mom's group!! We aren't limited to just moms however, have a few grandma's, girlfriends, fiance's etc. We are all here to support each other and our sailors in any way we can. This is a pretty active group, and has been a great help to me since my daughter went aboard the GW. Lot's of helpful ladies, more than willing to share whatever knowledge we have gained. Do you have a new sailor aboard the GW?
