Or heading to the states... they leave Japan at 9 AM and can arrive Seattle at 8 AM that 'same day'...

My son (not the sailor) has a japanese girlfriend... when she is home over the summer he skypes with her... it is our evening and her morning... he always jokes with her to let him know what happens tomorrow...

Another choice your sailor may have is to take the AMC flight (Wednesdays and Saturday arrivals) from Japan to Seattle and then a domestic flight to 'home'... not sure how much advance it takes to get on the flight... it always seems to be packed... also there is a great USO here in Seattle open 24/7 if your sailors are connecting through here!

DC-yep, am hoping to show up at the Family and Friends cruise and surprise her. Her boyfriend is coordinating all of this! What a sweet guy! (finally) :-) Wasn't gonna say anything on here until I had my ticket "in hand", but couldn't hold out any longer :-) :-) Can't say anything on facebook, cause she might catch sight of it from one of their port visits.

Hi, Kyle Melissa, welcome to the group. You will get all sorts of good tips and support here. I don't know what rate your daughter is but if she is in aviation, she will be a part of the air wing and live in Atsugi. After telling my g'daughter she would be in the barge for a while, she went straight to the barracks. So there are some minor differences.

Mollie, do you belong to the GW Ombudsman's e-mail list? You may want to join because a flyer recently sent about the Family and Friends Cruise may affect your travel plans, that is if you want to try to do it as well.

I find that the frequency of e-mails from my g'daughter are affected by whether or not she has a boy friend. Obviously, they take priority to me. :-)

Do listen to the advice about getting a power of attorney. Recently we wished that I had it to clear up a problem with a banking issue. She had to wait until she got to a port and got Internet access again. I could have cleared it up very quickly. She is now going to get it for me.

Kyle Melissa......the GW also has a facebook page where the pictures are posted almost daily. I HIGHLY recommend that also. Warning about indoc especially. Everything that isn't locked up gets stolen!! The GW is bad for this also, but indoc is the worst!!
Robin, I use the travel search kayak.com it searches about 12 different travel sights at once. Right now, I am looking at flights from San Francisco to Narita at about $900.00 round trip, as I may well be heading to Japan in early Nov. to surprise my sailor for her birthday.

KyleMelissa, welcome aboard the GW N4M family. Don't know for sure what your daughters "rate" is. My daughter has been in Japan for 11 months now. She has never had "crank" duty, maybe because of her rate. Claudia, Sue and Anchorsmom have covered the basics pretty well. By the time she finishes A school and indoc, she probably won't go to sea until late next spring, for the 2011 "cruise". This is an awesome group of mom's, and has sure made the adjustment to having my "baby" so far away a LOT easier on me. Never hesitate to ask any questions you have. One of us mom's can most likely provide you with the answer. This was also not my daughter's 1st assignment. She went to Japan as an E-4, which may well be the reason she hasn't had to "crank", so there may be more involved than just her "rate".
