also ladies, don't forget to ask if your sailors need new toothpaste, deodorant, etc... they are probably accustomed to the brands here in the states : axe, old spice, whatever it may be. i recently sent 2 huge boxes of all that stuff along w/ shampoo, food, even clearasil face wash! (sailors get pimples too!) haha. but yeah, that stuff is so expensive in other countries and even w/ the shipping cost, it is much cheaper for us to ship it to them. especially when they are deployed. just my 2 cents. :)

oh and the drink packets, make sure to send a LOT. even though they advise 1 packet per bottle of water, most 20-something-year-olds use 2 or even 3. so it goes VERY VERY quickly. they have easy access to water on the ship and sometimes get sick of drinking nothing but that.

Okay, Mollie, my G'daughter also got her plan through softbank. When they are in Japan, it is fantastic!!

Vicky, a bunch of care packages arrived on the GW and many didn't want the chapstick. My G'daughter said she took all unclaimed ones because they are great if you are working on the flight deck. Janis, good point about getting ones with moisturizers.

I hadn't thought about the powder drink packs. I will be sure to see if they need to have sugar added. When I am in the store, I lose all sense of creativity.

My G'daughter also likes the cheese and peanut butter crackers. They are good energy. She will share almost everything except she has to be there when they make the popcorn. Otherwise it is off limits. Also none of her "guys" seem to want the feminine products but if you have a female sailor they may be much appreciated.

just wanted to add to the care package idea. try to send some of those drink powder packs! my sailor is always talking about those and even though i sent him a few boxes of it, he blew right through them. i sent him the little propel ones you add to water. and yes, chapstick is a good one!

Tonya, DC is right, the rack pack is an awesome thing for them to have. The lady that makes them embroiders their last name on them, and I have never heard of one of them getting stolen. The watch and sunglasses are also a good idea, although sunglasses tend to be a very personal thing.
DC, my sailor got her iphone thru softbank. She has a really low rate plan, I'm pretty sure that her phone payment and the plan cost her 70-80 bucks amonth combined, and that gives her unlimited phone calls to the US when they are in port in Yoko.

Just wanted to add another thing to send in a care package is chapstick. While I was considering things to put in the care package other than what she asked for, I thought about being on a ship with all that salt water and ocean breezes. I wondered if they sold chapstick at their ship store. I went ahead and sent her a 3 pack, and figured she would think it was silly. Found out that the ship store does carry chapstick, but they run out often. She was really greatful for that one small thing I sent her.

Just be sure it's the type of chapstick that moisturizes, not the eucalyptus chapstick, because that actually dries out the lips.

Tonya, welcome to the group. My sailor's dad and I gave her a rack pack and she loves it. She says it really darkens her rack and dampens some of the noise. I had her name embroidered on it and requested some of the plastic pockets so she could insert pictures. Pat, the owner, is great to work with. It takes a good six weeks to get there. If he is going to have wi-fi access in port, the iPod Touch is also a good idea. Also the new iPod has a camera so Skype would work great. Now if the iPad would just get a camera ... sigh.

Question for others: You mentioned an iPhone for use in port. What plan would they get or would they access it with wi-fi?

I am glad to know that there are problems with e-mail, not glad there are problems, just glad to know about them. I have not heard from my sailor in days and I have asked several questions. It is hard not to get worried.

Tonya, welcome to the group. Can't think of anything to add to Vicky's list, as they are all excellent idea, but be SURE to get them etched with his name, and unfortunately, as big as the GW is, there IS a real problem with theft, so tell him that ALL the Navy moms said that if he doesn't lock it up, he will lose it. Sometimes they think us individual moms couldn't possibly have a clue, but if they hear that all Navy moms are saying the same thing, they will listen.

abc, that sounds reasonable, cause I've sent a couple of emails that Kelcie has not responded to any of the content of. I still hear from her almost every day, but sometimes I'm expecting some comment on something I wrote, but there isn't any. I've taken to "resending" some of those emails, especially if I ask something that I really need an answer to. And it's not "sad"....it's very sweet:>)

hey folks! i know for a fact that the whole email thing is screwy right now. it's going in and out as well as emails getting lost....so hang in there. i also heard that phones are going down intermittently...so it's hard because no one knows when exactly they are down. and thanks for the website, vicky! who wouldn't love bacon band-aids! whoo hoo! :)

and to carolina- my sailor knows i respond to emails asap also. he usually jokes and says "so have you been sitting there, refreshing your email all day?" haha. and i can't lie, sometimes i do! how sad. :)
Comment by Janis on September 17, 2010 at 11:42pm
Something must be going on, because my daughter usually emails me daily. I've emailed her twice with no response, so maybe I'll email her again. Maybe the next one she'll get (if their emails are getting lost to the internet, that is).
