soccercyn....I know that they weren't able to get mail of any type for a while. Maybe that's the delay. I orderd mine about 7 days ago, and they came today. I always have them sent to me, then I include them in a care package. That way, I don't have to "trust" that they have been sent. Don't they send you email updates when they are mailed out?

YEA Kathy (and everyone else who got unexpected emails) I hear from Kelcie almost every day, but I realize how lucky I am to have a sailorette :>) I also check my email the 1st thing every morning, and the minute I get home from work.....such is a mom's role I guess!! There have been times when her email is messed up also though.
anchorsmom....welcome aboard. This is a pretty awesome group of ladies, if I do say so myself!! You will find everyone here SO supportive and helpful.....I know that I sure have!

email hasn't been down, but there has been something going on... lots of emails are getting lost. not sure of the specifics, but that's what my sailor said...i kept sending him some semi-important info and he wasn't getting them... it took me 4 tries before he got it. he said something was going on and that emails were getting lost or delayed... he sent me one the other day and i got it 12 hours later...

Mary Jane, believe it or not, my sailorette is a WWF fan :>) I'll have to tell her about that, she will love it!! When she was in high school, her guy friends got her "hooked", she said she viewed it as kind of a soap opera, you had to know the cast of characters. Couldn't say that I could ever get into it, but like I said, she will think it's awesome. Almost as cool as her 2 favorite QB's playing against each other last week. She has LONG been a fan of Brett Farve, then at her last duty station, Drew Brees came to fly with the Blue Angels, and she got to meet him, and hang out for a few hours.

DC and abc....both good mottos (look for one bright spot in each day, and this too shall pass). My sailor has been pretty happy. At times a little frustrated (ok...a LOT frustrated) with command from time to time, but overall, likes being out to sea.
Didn't know about "Carrier" online. I bought the series from PBS for about $40.00, then found out afterward that you could rent it from Netflix. It's definitely worth watching. Really gives you a good "orientation" as to what our kids daily lives are like while on board.

i think it's been mentioned in this thread somewhere, but for anyone who hasn't watched the pbs series "carrier" needs to! you can find it online for free. it shows you what life on a carrier is like and for me personally, it helped me better understand what they go through, where they eat, sleep, etc.

i mean, any young person in their 20's is going to have those ups and downs, but imagine being stuck on a ship. :( "this too shall pass" is my motto. it always does.

I do think that the "down" feelings of our sailors has a lot to do with the fact that they have been at sea for a while and it will still be a while before they return to Yokosuka. It is kind of like the sophomore slump I used to see in students about the end of their sophomore year. I know that my sailor's notes are much more down than a while ago.

On changing rates: My sailor does not like being an AT and has considered changing rates. I have some concerns because I wonder if it is not a "grass is greener" mentality. As someone mentioned, life is hard and we do have to deal with it. If a sailor changes rates, the Navy may require that the sailor extend enlistment. Is this good? Perhaps.

I am not as clever at gag gifts. I need to go find some inexpensive things. I need a child to go with me. I did send a bottle of bubble liquid and my sailor said it brought "much joy."

I have a grandson who is a Marine and a granddaughter who is a sailor. I have the care packages on the table and play one for B. and one for V. Now some things are not appropriate for both, e.g., bug spray for the Marine in the southeast would not be used much on the GW, I don't think. Also, feminine products for the Marine would not be popular. Even the guys in her shop pass on those.

Lisa, I used to ask my students to describe what they thought would make a perfect job. I wanted things like, "work with people," "work alone," "work outside," "have a desk job," etc. Sometimes this would help them really focus on their future career path. I cannot imagine an accountant being happy as a sales person or vice versa. They are totally different characteristics even though both do deal with accounts. Perhaps some of our sailors should go through this exercise.

My sailor wants to bop me on the head when I remind her that happiness comes from within. It can also be a learned trait. Okay, perhaps the living conditions on a ship as an enlisted person for several months does try one's patience but I do believe one can find some serenity if mentally the person seeks for one bright thing a day.

Yes... You have to fill out the customs form for any package going overseas! But there is a shorter form you can use... I just use the same ones for all my packages... easier for me!

If you want to send a bunch of care packages you can fit nine of the small boxes into one military box... then you are shipping nine boxes for $12.50 instead of $5 each!
Comment by Susan mom to Niko on September 13, 2010 at 1:52pm
good part is you can fit a roll of oreos, granola bars, and toys plus a note from home... due to the lack of space I tend to send the big box only when I know my sailor can share with his squadron... the smaller ones go every other week!
