Yep.... it is about the size of a VHS box... ships for $4.95... kind of fun to see just what you can find to fill it!!

Filling those big boxes can be costly... I have three 'adopted' sailors aboard the GW and I love sending the $5 flat rate box!! You do have to be creative in what you can send! But I have gotten pretty good at finding all kinds of things to fill them with!! As you say there are limited on space... my last boxes had a dvd, cookies, gum, candy, yoyo, cards and a letter... a suduko book is the same size as a dvd... or they also love paperback books... with a couple of snacks... just knowing they are thought of is the best medicine!

soccercyn, I have to agree with abc, I think that at this young age, many of our kids are still going thru a lot of ups and downs no matter what they are doing with their lives. I once heard a saying "a mother is only as happy as her unhappiest child" We feel their pain so strongly, that it is hard on us as well. At this age, things can turn around quickly. Hopefully this will be the case with your son. I have to agree, a supply of "silly" things, with just a couple of them thrown into each care package can be a real uplifting thing for these kids. My daughter also gets a real kick out of "stupid people" clippings from our local newspaper that I send.

soccerlyn, i'm sorry to hear about your situation. :( you know, most sailors seem to go through these up and downs...it's almost inevitable. i have one sailor friend who got so depressed that he got a dishonorable discharge. tell your son to hang in there, that it DOES get better! also yes, the care packages are a great idea! my ONLY input on that is to try and send things that are silly, yet also useful. i have heard complaints in the past because they don't have much room to start w/ and don't like having too much "clutter"...

and to vicky, bacon strip band-aids!?!?! i must get these! haha.

Oh soccercyn........SO sorry to hear that your sailor is going thru a hard time!! Dang it anyway!! I know that they JUST had a change of command while in Manila, hopefully that will make things better for him. It is so hard, to be so far away from them, when we would give anything to be able to hug them and comfort them like we are supposed to be able to do as moms. Hang in there. I will add him to my prayer list. Let me know if you think of anything more tangible that might help out.

hi vicky. the email i have for the gw readiness group is: gwfrg73@yahoo.com. however, if you are stateside (and i'm guessing you are), you won't get much out of them. i don't have an email for the gw ombudsman...have never communicated w/ him before.

hey everyone! the OFFICIAL holiday leave schedule is out now. there are 4 timeframes..in case your sailor is planning on coming home or if you're planning a visit to them. i don't know if this falls under opsec, so i won't post here...i think sailors are allowed to give out these dates? not sure. :(
