Sherrill, glad you are out of the hospital, and hopefully feeling better, unfortunately gallbladders to have a tendency to keep causing trouble until they are removed. Hope all goes well with that surgery and you are home safe and sound quickly.

abc, Like the others, I do welcome you as a part of the group. Also, don't get too discouraged because there are lots of hoops to jump through. Many sailors do get married after joining the Navy and they do live with their wives. Yes, the higher the rank, the greater the privileges. I was brought up as a Navy brat and my Dad would always say "RHIP" (Rank Hath Its Privileges) when an older sibling was allowed to do something I was not allowed to do. Well, this is true in all military situations as you will well find out.

I'll tell you an amusing story. When I was a teen, we lived in Germany on an Army base. We had to use the military hospital and I needed some dental work done. My mom would try to get an appointment for me and would get the royal run-around. And yet some of Dad's junior officers were able to get appointments for their children. Mom began to suspect that it was good old RHIP coming into play and that the Army did not understand the Navy ranks. After all, Commander sounded higher than Captain. So we went to the dental clinic and tried once again and again got a run around. So Mom sweetly suggested that they call my Dad when an appointment opened up but ... she could not remember the number, would they please look it up. This, of course, gave them Dad's position, Chief of Staff of Naval Forces in Germany. All of a sudden and appointment was available. Now there was an enlisted man with his wife sitting in the clinic so she asked when an appointment would be available for the wife. They said they did not know. So Mom told them to give her my appointment. We both got appointments that day.

wow ladies! i just get home to check my email and what do i get? a flood of loving words from you all! thanks! *tear* you know i didn't mean that in a negative way (about crowding the space and whatnot). but thank you all! i guess there is a reason why i posted my question onto this group even though it may have been more appropriate elsewhere. when i first joined this group, i'll admit i was a skeptic, but i love this group and i make sure to check it everyday! i'm always trying to do my part in informing everyone else of what i know because i know i hate sitting there wondering what's going on or where my sailor is.

also to rabbitchick, i'm a little confused. so basically, the only way to live w/ my sailor is if we had gotten married before him joining the navy? he is above an e-4, if that matters. sorry, still new to this navy thing. :) i'll try to private msg you. thanks everyone!

abc815, i went directly to a recruiting office and was informed by them that while a sailor is categorized as single, they will NOT have their own housing while on deployment, they'll live in the barracks with the rest of the single crew as well as sailors who's families aren't with them overseas. unless you are married prior to your sailors enlisting and his/her rank is E4 or higher, your chances of being granted sponsership to move overseas with your sailor are 1 in a 1000 chance of occuring. my husband notified his superiors that he would be getting married while on leave this past June and we were told that it would take 3-6 months for any kind of paperwork to be processed and after that it would take an extra 3-6 months to start receiving benefits. i wish you the best of luck but don't want you to get your hopes up too high sweety. marrying a deployed sailor requires a sense of patience and understanding because sometimes things don't turn out as planned and change at the drop of a hat.

thanks everyone! i will definitely check out some other groups when i have time so i don't crowd up this space. :) i just feel closest to this group is all. haha. to DC - i live right outside of chicago, will be getting married here, and then trying to obtain my military id at the naval base nearby (great lakes naval base). past that, i don't think my sailor can start any paperwork until AFTER we're married. also, he will have housing at that time. so i'm wondering if i could just "stay" with him until i get command sponsored. sigh~ what a headache.

also, yes, brandy, your sailor probably saved a ton of money! did you ladies catch that article about how the philipines were preparing for the arrival of the gw? because of the boost in their economy? last year, during the gw visit, our sailors spent $7,000,000 in just a few days! that includes hotels, shopping, etc. i just found that to be interesting. :) have a good day all, i'm off to work.

I was able to enjoy a nice Skype chat late last night, although the reception left a bit to be desired. My sailor commented that they were in a mall and that there was little to do but spend money. So, Brandy, you are right staying on the ship probably saved your son money.

abc, I doubt that you can get a military ID until after you are married because until then you are not entitled to it. If you get married without the Navy permission you can eventually sort things out but it is likely to be much more difficult. The Navy is not happy when the sailors don't follow protocol and one way to make that point is to drag their feet on paperwork.

When I went to Ireland for sabbatical, I had a round-trip ticket but it was an open ticket. I had paperwork from both my University and the one in Ireland; however, I came within a hair's breath of the English putting me on the next plane home. So you definitely want all your paperwork in order before you go.

Again, with the Navy permission to get married, the Navy can "grease the skids" for you and get you through all the loops you will need to jump through. It is possible to do it fairly quickly if you are in a major city, e.g., NY, San Francisco, etc. When my SIL was preparing to join my brother in Japan, she was able to get her passport and other paperwork within days in San Francisco. That being said, she and my brother had been married for several years and the Navy had everything laid out for her.

If you are considering going to Japan before you are married, you better purchase a round-trip ticket. It will facilitate entry into Japan and you can use it if you cannot get housing and other details ironed out when you are there.

I wish you well in this endeavor. Remember ... have patience and keep your sense of humor.

to dee: oh my! does it really take that long to get everything sorted out? uh oh! also, how do i go about obtaining a military id since i am in the states and not married yet? thanks! i'll try to look under a different group and see what i find. :)

hi all! not sure if anyone can help me out, but i have some questions about moving to japan...do i need a visa to move there after we get married in the states? also, without getting into too much detail (because it is very confusing), if i were to buy a one-way ticket to japan BEFORE being married, would i have a problem entering the country? it is now crunch time to get things taken care of and i have no idea where to begin. :( i am doing my research here while my sailor does his research on his end. ANY help would be much appreciated! basically, i need to everything about moving to japan. thank you all :) and feel free to write me here or in a private msg.

it must be something about manila, huh? :) i got another chance to talk w/ my sailor via skype....finally! he had to use someone else's computer in another hotel room! SIGH. a few of my friends are also having the same problem w/ their sailors and many sailors have had to resort to using payphones to make some expensive calls. so for those who are still waiting, hang in there! it's most likely beyond their control. also for those who i've messaged with in private, i need to add something to the info i gave if you're interested. thanks, all! hope your holiday is going well!
