Thanks to those of you who replied to my questions regarding the time it takes for mail to get from the USA to the USS GW ship.

Kelley called her mom yesterday and she did not receive any letters, cards or packages that we sent out on 8/16 so that's almost 2 weeks now. She felt sad on her birthday which was Wed 8/25. But she did perk and was very happy when her mom told her that cards were on the way.

Enjoy the weekend!

ADN, some coworkers and I will be packing items next week to send to GW from Mollys Adopt A Sailor. Address Molly gave me has: MM1 Morgan, IM-3 Calibration Lab. There was no info about Shop 11. Is this the same individual u correspond with? I just want to make sure the items get to the sailors.

Kelley's aunt, I mail care packages to my g'daughter and it may take three weeks to a month to arrive. I mail from Maine in the FPO/APO priority mail boxes from the post office. I think sometimes it depends upon how the package links up to a delivery and where they are.

Hi Kelley's Aunt, welcome to the GW group! As much of a problem as there is with stealing, I have actually never heard of anything getting stolen from the mail shipments (including care packages). I think that there are probably a TON of people around when those are recieved, so one would have to be pretty brazen to risk stealing at that point. Mail usually takes about 10 days from the west coast, it might be longer if you are shipping it from further east. They can't use their personal lap tops while they are on board, but they can use them when they are out in port, but sometimes there isn't to much internet availability from certain ports :( I think that there are at least two galleys aboard. One for the enlisted, and a separate (that serves nicer food) for the officers.

Can someone please tell me about how long it takes for lettes and care packages to get from the USA to the USS GW? We just received the mailing address 8/13 and sent cards and a package on 8/16 for Kelley's birthday that was 8/25. I hope that she at least received the card.

I'm concerned because the address she gave us was for the Deck Dept and had 2 box numbers. Her first job on the ship was on deck, but she was moved to the kitchen back in July so I'm wondering if the address should have been changed to Galley dept (?) and maybe she didn't know it changed. Sure do hope she gets the goodies and someone doesn't take them the way I hear about the stealing on the ship. That is really a shame.

I dont get on this site often, but I did read that another mother had a daughter that worked in the galley. Do you know on a ship that size if there is more than one galley?

We don't hear from Kelley often, every 2 to 3 weeks. Last she called was 8/13. About 6 weeks ago she said she was approved for a Navy email address but we have not received an email from her yet. Being new in the Navy (she graduated from boot camp in March) I'm sure she doesn't know all the in's and out's yet. She has a laptop, but from what I read here they can't use it to send email.

I appreciate any information you can provide.
Thanks in advance!!!

Soccercvn, I have some paperbacks I've been meaning to take to the local grade school for the rummage sale. I would be glad to donate them. These are what I call my "junk" reading ... very little thought required but easy to escape into.

Sherrill, my g'daughter works on the Prowler. While she does get good access to computers, she often has little time to write much. I often get an e-mail beginning with "I'm sorry this is so short" or "I'm sorry I have taken so long to reply but I have been so busy." Little does she realize how much a very short note means. I hate to admit that the first thing I reach for when I awaken in the morning is my iPod to check my e-mail. If there is a note no matter how brief, my day is made!

hi carolina, are you sure on the e-6 and above getting liberty? that's strange because my sailor is an e-4 and he gets to leave... maybe i'll have to double check?

THANK YOU SO MUCH Tam.....it's just a relief to be reassured that the "Adopt a Sailor" group wasn't being taken advantage of :>) :>)

Welcome aboard AirRescue mom....we TOTALLY understand that you will be busy spending time with your sailor while he is home before he leaves for the GW. This is an awesome group of ladies as I'm sure you will find out when you join us regularly.
If somebody does find a way to get books to the sailors that they can exchange back and forth, let me know. I have a TON that I would be happy to donate to the cause.
My mom used to say that "two wrongs don't make a right, but it SURE does make it EVEN". heh heh heh. I like the idea of planting something valuable with an exploding dye pack to reveal the thieves. Once again, will mention the problem to my MA to see if there is anything she can do to push a little more proactive approach to the problem. I agree....camera's would be SUCH a deterrent!!
Oh yeah, before I forget, does anybody out there know of a "calibration/lab shop 11 onboard the GW? Molly's adopt a sailor group had put out a call for care packages for that group of sailors, and it has been "hinted" that no such shop exists, and maybe Molly's group was being taken advantage of. Would like to find out for sure. She is such a great lady, with such a great group of moms that work with her, I would HATE to see her taken advantage of. Let me know if you know if that lab/shop exists for sure or not.
