Ladies, wonderful advice and direction. I know Ant's laptop got broken also, very early on and he has not replaced. I think u r right about depending on what shop they are in as far as emailing, that is the jist I got from Ant. Paying it back with a kindness is wonderful. In working with youth, we used the theme from the movie, Pay It Forward, had Tshirts and the works. I think as Ant has developed friendships in the shop, they watch out for each other and help each other, and perhaps the shop known as watching each other's back, less negative happens to them. I don't mean retaliating or anything like that, just knowing that friends are watching out for friends helps deter the thieves. And like said, the thieves have their own system down. I would think the chain of command would be reasonable, I don't know, from what I understand emphasis is placed on being responsible to watch over ur own belongings, I just don't know, bc I hear mixed perspectives on this. All I can say, is that it is a disappointing circumstance. I had to emphasize to Ant, that not everyone is in the Navy for the same reasons as he, and that the ship is so big, it is just like a minature town with people of good character and not so good, so use best judgement u can and be a good friend so in turn u will have good friends.
About the books, yes, I wondered about that, space and all. Wondered about Kindles to check out, but then again, u go back to, probably many would not be returned. There must be some way to address this. You ladies are smarter than me. I would lean on the advice of the ladies who work in the bookstores and libraries for the best way to address this. I would help and support but do not have the knowledge to know the best method.

Sherrill, my G'daughter takes her lap to the hotel when they are in port and then accesses the Internet from there. She paid dearly for Internet access in Korea but the connection was pretty good. I don't know if she had to pay for access in Singapore but the connection was flaky. We did get about a 10 minute Skype chat so I savored that. She is also an AT and has said that her unit has to access the Internet. She can only send/receive e-mails but no other access.

On the theft issue: I have often thought it would be good to plant a bag of money with the exploding paint like they use in banks. Then when the thief reached for the money ... BANG and covered in paint. There is a service that can be put on a laptop. If yours is stolen you can put a tracer on it and the service can identify when/where it is being used again. Not sure if that would really help.

You have to make sure that your sailor has gone up the chain of command as far as he/she can, before you involve a senator/representative/governor. Be aware that if you get a representative, etc. involved, there *may* be repercussions. When congressional orders come down, it's a BIG deal to the military. I can tell you they don't like it.

i agree w/ lisa in AZ. there are no security cameras? on a ship of over 5,000, you would think so. although the navy allows sailors wonderful opportunities, it's these "little" things that get to my sailor sometimes. he says it's the rotten few who spoil the fun for everyone else. :( i truly hope that this issue will be addressed, but for some reason, i doubt it. i just can't wait until this deployment is over with!

Hi abc, I'd be curious to know about the lap top also, I don't think that Kelcie has use of hers except when they are in port.
Brandy....that is just SO wrong!! My daughter is an MA and I have even brought it up to her (she was also a victim while on the barge) She said that the thieves are smart enough to hide what they steal, and not leave it in their personal berthing area, so it makes it really hard to nab the culprits. They find things that are "stashed" from time to time, but to actually catch the person who did the stealing is VERY hard.
cfsnowmom....I'd LOVE to hear about "paying it back". Anybody who steals from their shipmate deserves ANYTHING they get!!!
antsmom, the donation of books sounds like a great idea, and Molly is TRULY an amazing lady, who I'm sure would not hesitate to throw her resourses our way should we go down that path, but I would think that the one thing that we would need to be sure of first, is that there is a physical space on board that could be used for an "exchange" or library, other than the official one.

Soccercyn27, go to this website http://www.refresheverything.com/ all I know is that current projects end 8-31, at this site you can submit a new project/idea for funding, you can do a search under groups here for Mollys Adopt A Sailor group. Molly is wonderful to correspond with and gets behind all Navy Fams - there are just a lot of people across the nation in her group and they are widespread on Facebook getting the message out for the votes - I believe they are ranked either 3 or 4 at this time, coming up from #10. Top 10 are awarded grants under the 50K area - there are different amount categories - I really admire her, she has really gone forth to support our sailors and other military, quite a lady.

Brandy, I know when Ant was going thru some tough times, there were sailors that gave him a helping hand and even loaned him money a time or two. They do have those friends that take care of each other if needed. I know it is tough. Try and hang in there.

Ladies, I am so sorry to hear about the thefts. Ant, going on 3 yrs now, was first on the Kitty Hawk. I so remember him having to wait on the barge to get on the ship and once finally on the ship all of his sheets and towels were ripped off among some other things. Stressful time, as a newbie. I just felt so helpless and tearful. He replaced his sheets and towels with "pink, gurly, colors" so some1 would think twice before taking. I just know as he has been there longer, major decrease in any of his things being taken. I think the more experienced sailors know how to handle this better. No matter, it is frustrating and anger provoking to have someone hurt your sailor in this way, especially someone who is supposed to have their back. I would be interested in what advice cfsnowmom can offer.
About the books. I wonder about the possibility of applying for one of the Pepsi Refresh grants and having the support of Molly's Adopt A Sailor group? I think it would be so great for the sailors to have good reading material available to them.

Brandy, my heart goes out to you and your son. I know that you are suffering for him and he has to go through it. With all the theft that is discussed, I have been in fear that something similar would happen to my g'daughter. I can imagine how violated he must feel. To lose a gift would hit especially hard. I send you many hugs.
