I am so sorry that happened to your son. It's a horrible feeling to have your personal things being rifled through. It's happened to me a few times. And trying to replace everything (ID, cards ,etc.) are a complete pain in the you know what.

It is a major morale downer! I don't blame you for being upset for him. Has your son talked to the SAs about it? Has he talked to his superior and told him/her what has happened? I believe they have help for special circumstances like what your poor son experienced.

Regarding the pillow cases; my daughter said they are only allowed to have solid colored pillow cases and sheets, etc. She works in the galley, so it could just be her unit.

Jane, I remember when I was an Army wife (many moons ago, lol) and we were in Germany, that if we needed housekeeping, etc. We could contact someone (I would call housing, like you said) and they would give us names of people (usually it would be German Nationals) that would help. Is she on the economy (off base)? I don't know about Japans laws, but I remember that Germany was extremely particular with neat yards, and if you didn't keep them neat, they would fine you.

If she's on base, there are still people that can help. I would imagine that there are millitary teens that would like to make extra money and keep her yard mowed while she's away. Tell her to check the PX (Sorry, I am using Army speak, lol). There should be fliers offering yard services and housekeeping. There is always someone willing to help.

soccercyn....My daughter just asked for a new supply of books also. She said that she had included some of her old ones in the box she recently mailed home. It seemed odd to me, as I kind of thought that the library would be a resource for the kids to exchange books amongst themselves also. It seems really strange to me that they don't have some sort of book exchange readily available to them while on board. I am going to clarify with her in tonights email though, and will let you know if I find out anything.

If anyone was expecting an email from their loved one yesterday and didn't get it, daughter emailed me a few hours ago and told me their internet went down temporarily.

Have they not reissued another card? Sorry, I don't know how long ago it's been since his card has been stolen. But if he does have a replacement, you can certainly wire a direct transfer to his account. I've done it a few times, when my daughter was in college. If he doesn't have a replacement yet, I'm pretty sure he can use a pre-paid. They work the same as any credit/debit card. In fact, a lot of people think they're safer to use (because it has nothing to do with a bank account). And you can keep reloading the card with more money. Just make sure you get a reloadable one. Although, I think most prepaid cards do that now. Most countries accept visa cards, so he shouldn't have any trouble with it. You will probably have to call the prepaid company yourself to activate it. I don't know if he will be able to while on the ship. You could ask him to make sure. Just send it 'expedite' and have insurance on it from the PO. Tell them what's in the letter, so they would know the best way to safe guard it while it's enroute to him.

I know ladies.....maybe the CO should treat them like they did in boot camp, where every sunday they were required to write letters. Maybe they need to set aside a time where they are required to at least email home!!!

I belong to a N4M group called Heads at Ease. We have been making pillowcases for deployed military, primarily sailors although we have sent to all branches of the service. Some of our pillowcases are pretty wild but the thank you notes indicate that they are appreciated very much.

We have found that not all ship captains will allow them so do have your sailor check to make sure it is okay. Drop by Heads at Ease to see of some of the pillowcases we are sending.
