karen, i think katlanta is right. i think as far as bedding goes, they can use whatever they want.

and to mama nonie, i'm sorry to hear that you're getting such short answers from your son! :( unfortunately, that seems to go for alot of other navy moms. now communicating w/ girlfriends is a different story. i am the girlfriend of a gw sailor and while i get a long email everyday, his mom gets nothing. i tell him all the time to PLEASE EMAIL OR CALL YOUR MOTHER. yet he doesn't! not sure what else to try. when emailling him next, instead of asking anymore 'yes' or 'no' answers, try asking something that REQUIRES a longer answer. :) good luck!

to all the navy moms, my sailor is asking for non-perishable food items that he can eat when he's in a rush. he asked for a microwaveable bowl along w/ some instant noodles. he says that space is VERY limited and to keep that in mind. any suggestions? thank you!

Yep, black socks!! Like grandma said, not dress, not sport, just the "in between"
Found out that "blowing out the pad eyes" meant that they fill those "divits" with water, then the "wogs" have to try to blow the water out of them, which I guess is an impossible task! She said it was a lot of fun though. She has a TON of buy friends, so guess they made her work her butt off!! But she loves it :>)

Ok ladies, I am a dummy, my son has been there for 3 yrs and signed up for another, and in all that time I never sent socksd, lots of other things. Am sending some items for some GW sailors via Molly's Adopt A Sailor, requests were socks, socks, and more socks: what color socks do I send? Makes me wonder, how has mine managed all this time w/o asking for socks. Am glad they are getting some fun, they all well deserve a little fun, they work so hard.

You can also watch the whole series on the computer from the PBS site. I agree, grandma, it is a good documentary and gives you a good idea of life on board the carrier.

cfsnowmom, thanks for the link. I like the two perspectives of being a Wog.

yay! got an email from my sailor and now i know what a shellback is! i had no idea what you ladies were talking about. my sailor became a shellback last year, so he got to have some fun w/ the new ones this time around. :) heard it was messy and he got covered in paint. it's nice to hear they're having some fun!
Comment by Mollie...Kelcies Mom on August 20, 2010 at 9:31am
Mine said that she had to crawl thru a tub of green slime, I'm guessing that was the "messy" part. Said she had to do over 100 pushups and try to "blow out pad eyes". No idea what "pad eyes" are, but anyway she said it was a lot of fun, but she's exhausted. She was happiest about the fact that she got to sleep in till 0500.

I had a very brief e-mail from my g'daughter to tell me she is a "shellback," too. She was very glad because she was really looking forward to it. She did say it was a bunch of mess but fun.

Well, daughter just emailed me and told me she's now a 'shellback'. She said 'woo hoo'. Lol They must have had a lot of fun. :) Also yes, they have microwaves. But they only have them in the mess decks. They do sell popcorn and gum in the ship store.
Comment by Mollie...Kelcies Mom on August 19, 2010 at 9:40pm
Didn't know about the individual starbucks servings, I'll have to look for those. Most work areas have their own microwaves, so that kind of food is great! Have sent gum of one kind or another in every package, no complaints so far. Mine was SO thankful that I had just sent socks just before the laundry shut down fiasco. She said it saved her from washing socks in the sink in order to get by. My sailor is looking forward to WOG day and becoming a "shellback" also. Don't know all the details, but I guess it is QUITE the big deal :>)
