Thanks,Navy Ma, I'll send the gum in his next box. He says its like Christmas when he gets the boxes and opens them. I send two so he can share one with his shop mates. Said he needed socks after S Korea, he had no access to laundry facilities at that time and ran out of socks. Sent him white socks, he wrote back, "Mom, I need black socks." OOPS on my part too.

SueS, I buy bags of Starbursts and open them to fill in little holes. DH always wants to know why the whole bag disappears. Last time I repackaged Skittles into sandwich bags and used them to stuff around other things. I figure that she will eat them and the other shipmates will figure they are safe although repackaged.

I shutter at the thought of gum after all that orthodontic work. So much has been invested in teeth that I hate to think of damaging anything. On the other hand all that candy and cookies I have been sending certainly is not good for the teeth.

Lisa, thanks for the idea of the vitamin C drink. I will look for some.

I received a brief e-mail this morning from the G'daughter. She says tomorrow is Wog Day. Alas, she is on cleaning crew and she is dreading the mess that will have to be cleaned up in the berthing area. Before the GW deployed she was really looking forward to becoming a shellback. I told her that she will just have something else to moan/brag about.

I'm pretty sure they have microwaves all over the ship. I can ask my daughter to make sure, since I've been getting several emails from her in the past two days. I'm guessing she's off duty, and has some free time.

Navy Ma, my daughter knows who your son is. She said to tell you when she sees him run through her galley she will tell him and I quote; 'Smack him and tell him he needs to email his mother'. lol

SueS, check with your local coffee manufacturer, our Community Coffee Company here in Baton Rouge has a military match program where you buy 4 bags and they will match your 4 bags and ship directly to your sailor for you. Maybe a local company there might do something similar. I try to also send beef jerky which he can grab and go. Does anyone know if bubble gum is allowed and if it makes it in a care package, or does it melt?

don't forget drink mix packets! they have lots and lots of water which gets boring. :) my sailor loves the lipton green tea citrus drinks, so i throw those in also. cheap, but makes a big difference to them :) coffee is a great idea too! didn't think of that one.

DC...yep, the Dollar Store is a treasure trove of funny little things. If they have a private coffee maker in her work area I bet they would LOVE some starbucks. That's a great idea. Kelcie is a coffee monster, I'll have to go get some for her next package. I've been sending a "People" magazine, or something like that in each package also.
I know what you mean about all of China and N.Korea's threats!! I only hope and pray that they aren't really THAT stupid. Keep our kids in my prayers every night though.

Janis, When I mentioned that the e-mail access was down for maintenance, I was referring to the e-mail access on the GW while they were in port. Then when my g'daughter was off ship, she had trouble finding Internet access that worked. We only managed to touch base once for a very few minutes. :-( I have not heard from her since they left Singapore.

abc815, Many thanks for the lovely picture of the merlion. It's terrific. My g'daughter said she bought a stuffed toy merlion for one of her sisters.

Ginnlynn, I sometimes wonder why I keep reading the news about China/N Korea/US relations. It really is scary times.

Mollie, on a lark I put in a bottle of bubble solution in a care package. I was told that "it brought much joy." I need to go to the dollar store to find more silly things. My g'daughter mentioned that she needed to find a Starbucks store because all her shop really enjoyed its coffee. Gives me another idea of what to include. I keep trying to get her to give me ideas and she waffles (no not the kind you eat).

For some reason I got the impression that the waffles were cooked for the officers, in their galley area. I didn't think that the regular sailors get them, and obviously, I was right! To bad that they don't get "treated" every once in a while. Although, Kelcie did say at one point that every Sunday they had crab and brisket and really looked forward to that.

No, she is on the ship. When they were at port, she was looking for a cafe. I haven't heard from her for about a week, maybe longer. And when others were talking about the service might be down, I was assuming that's why she was looking for one (when they were in port). I'm sorry, I guess I wasn't clear enough. I'm also half asleep, lol. Been a very busy night here. I just wanted the others who haven't heard anything for the past few days that everyone's okay.
