Nonie, I typed in "compare e-readers" in Google and found some good reviews. It does have a table that compares the different features.

Navy Ma, I, too, was jealous because I had not heard from our G'daughter. Then I received an e-mail telling me that the e-mail had been down for a few days for maintenance. I do hold on to the concept that no news is good news but it is hard. Like you, I want to know that she is safe ... but still would like an e-mail! She contacted me last night through Facebook and we may Skype this evening. She said her Internet connection was bad but I have my fingers crossed. Hope you, too, hear soon.

Thomas'Mom....please please stay in touch and let us know how he is doing! My brother in law did 4 years in the Navy, then joined the Air Force and retired from there. Those pic's were heart wrenching :( I add my very best wishes for both of you to the long list already going here!
Soccercyn, I know Ziploc makes a little hand held "air sucker" that costs less than $10.00, so if the brownies don't make the trip well, you might look into that.
Judi, I lucked out also and the $1.08 walmart "Miss Debbie" I think brownies did the trick for Kelcie also :>)
Lois, congrats on your son's promotion. That is SO awesome!
Karen, have never heard of the ATT phone card plan that allows your sailor to call, then you get the bill later. I would also be a little nervous about that one :>) I have ordered the pre-paid ship to shore cards and usually put one in every care package to help keep her calling costs down, but not risk put our future retirement at risk :>) :>)

Thomas' Mom, I wish Thomas well in his new career with the Air Force. Both my sons were Air Force, one air guard and the other regular air force. They were quite happy with it. One has a son who is a Marine and the other has a daughter who is in the Navy. Please do let us know how he is doing.

Lois, congratulations to your son. I know that you must be proud.

Have any of you tried "pie in a jar" or "cake in a jar"? I would think baking brownies in a jar like the cake in a jar would work well. I might also wait until the GW gets back to Japan. Perhaps delivery would be quicker.

Katiana, I have been considering an e-reader and reading different reviews.

The Kindle has is easy to read in bright daylight because of the e-ink technology. When a book has been loaded, it is available for reading without connection. If one does not have access to Amazon's Whispernet for downloading, then a book can be downloaded to a computer and transferred over. You can download a free app for the iPod or iPad so that you can read using one of those devices. So if your son already has an iPod touch, he could download books from Amazon. The kindle with wi-fi only has been reduced to $139 and with global 3G it is $189. The latter does allow downloading in Japan without a wi-fi connection.

I recently read that the iPad works well when reading in bed because of the back lighting and it uses e-book technology. I have read that the Kindle is easier on your eyes for reading a long time. The iPad has all sorts of other useful things (and is definitely on my wish list for Christmas).

I have not paid as much attention to the Nook or any other e-reader. I do know that the Kindle dx does handle PDF files better than the smaller Kindle. ... choices, choices, choices!!

bobdot, I know you were excited to see your sailor in a picture. I was thrilled when I saw my g'daughter's picture.

Ladies, I am far from well versed in the readers but I know the school district uses the Kindle. Not sure about the download situation. Best Buy suggestion to check it out sounds good. I know I am getting excited about thinking ahead to Christmas. Ant will probably come before Christmas holidays. It has been 2 yrs. Glad a Mom found her sailor's pic in the photos. I always look but no such luck. I so hope they enjoy the port and get a little R&R. Yes, I so agree, get power of attorney and on the bank account.

bobdot....what day's pictures? How exciting for you, to get to see her "in action"!!
Brandy, we had our bank card hacked one time while we were in San Francisco on vacation, so shopping online isn't always the "weak link" It is SO aggravating, then having the kids out of the country and trying to get things resolved makes it even harder. I probably shouldn't admit this online, but Kelcie had me call her bank and say I was her after she gave me the needed passwords etc. That was how I finally got her mess resolved.
Judi.......is there anyway we can have one of our sailors/sailorettes get the cattle prod out on your daughter??? :>) I've have had Kelcie use it (figuratively of course) on a few of her friends that I knew weren't keeping in contact.
Comment by Mollie...Kelcies Mom on August 11, 2010 at 10:01am
Brandy, that STINKS!. It is a real hassle when they are out of the country and something like this happens. Kelcie thought she lost her ATM card right after she arrived in Japan. Luckily, I was on her bank account over here, so I could do the leg work, but it still took quite a while. Of course, she found it, but it was to late, cause I had already cancelled it. But it taught her a lesson. Surely one of his friends can "front" him some $ until this gets straightened out?
