ladies~ i completely forgot to mention this. my bf and i both have skype accounts and he set his calls to get forwarded to his cell phone in japan. so sometimes, i call his skype number from my cell phone and it gets forwarded to his cell phone free of charge! i'm with t-mobile and have never seen any long distance charges. :)

hi claudia. he told me that the gw was renting them out before they headed off the ship to do their thing in pusan. my sailor had duty off and on all day, so he hasn't gotten off the ship yet...so i can't imagine him getting it anywhere else. i'm guessing this is so that their sailors aren't wandering around w/ no access to phones. but what a great idea, huh? definitely have your son ask around and i'm sure he can find one.

hi guys! i talked to my sailor today! he said that they were renting out cell phones that work in korea during their stay for about $40. the cool thing is, the phones come with over 5 hours preloaded minutes, and that includes calls to the states. so it may be cheaper to have your sailors grab one of those asap. my sailor also climbed to the top of mt. fuji on the 4th of july and although he is in great shape, he said that it was extremely hard to breathe up there. so just a caution. :)

Good morning Mary, 2 of my 3 have also jumped :>) But I KNOW where they get their adventurous spirits. Kelcie took my MOM with her when she jumped. My mom was 74 at the time!! The pictures were hillarious. My mom's gray hair made her look like an elderly, white, female Don King. hahahaha. I blame EVERYONE of my gray hairs on one or the other of my kids!! :>) Will dig that link up for you this evening.

hi mary! thank you for the warm welcome and the warning... haha. i have a feeling that i will be visiting this site more frequently in the coming months. i just wish i could get some REAL info sometimes! sigh. and i've heard the same thing, that the gw will be deployed for a few more months. i am looking for the next time they have 5 days (minimum) at a port, so i can fly out there! but even that seems impossible to do! oh, can you tell me where you can purchase those ship to shore phone cards? thanks!

Hi Mary and abc, first of all, welcome to our "group". I'll warn you right now, we are a "chatty bunch" :>) but I think we are a lifeline for each other, with our kids so far away! abc is right on target with her info. We learn fast :>) Yep, the ship to shore calls are expensive. I ordered some ship to shore phone cards and stuck them in her last care package. She hasn't gotten it yet, but figured that I could contribute to the cost at least a little in that way. If you didn't get the site to order those cards in the post a few weeks back, let me know if you are interested and I will post the link for you.
Mary, they were told when they departed Yokosuka right after the 4th of July that they would not be back for about 5 months, so you son will have plenty of time on the "high seas", even if he trains for another month before going aboard.

oh mary~ also, as far as i know, my sailor's mailing address has always stayed the same. whether he's on land or water.

hi mary. from what i know, they cannot skype or facebook or anything like that. they can use their ship email address only...i am pretty new to this too, so i'm not too sure myself! my sailor is able to call me from the ship's payphone, but it is really expensive! he puts $50 at a time and we're always getting cut off by the operator saying our time is running out. :( so to be realistic, i would expect slightly less contact once he's on the ship. they also have to wait for a computer to open up and sometimes, there are lines... my sailor tells me he usually waits 30-45 minutes during the busy times! i am happy to hear that your son is enjoying tokyo! lots to see and do there. i will be moving there myself at the end of the year. i can't wait to do everything, except for climbing mt. fuji ( i would never make it! )

yes, glad to hear they'll be off that ship. hoping for a call that doesn't end with "you have 60 seconds remaining". i SO SO SO wish there was a way for us who are stateside to get a heads up on their plans so i can get a flight out to meet them at their ports. my sailor is halfway across the world and i haven't seen him since easter. :(
