I sent an email to the GW Ombudsman yesterday asking her to hook me up with info on how to be a support to sailors that don't have it from their families. Will look forward to her help in making the needed connections. My daughter also loves her RackPack. I can't remember the specifics, but do know that I had ordered the "long" one. I think that the lady that makes them is pretty familiar with what each carrier's specifications are. You might email her to check if someone on here doesn't have the answers.

For my daughters 1st birthday away from home at her first station, I made her favorite birthday dinner, froze it, packed it in dry ice and overnighted it to her. It was only from Central Calif to Southern Calif, but it cost me almost 60.00 to send it. It was actually worth it, but the next year, I sent a gift card to her favorite restaurant :>) I can't even imagine the cost to "overnight" something to Japan. OUCH !!!

MaryJo, you are so right. I always send plenty for my daughter to share, but I never even thought about the kids that don't have the support that our kids do. Soooo sad to think of that :>( Wonder if there is any way for the command to let some of us moms know of any sailors that might be in that situation, so that we could help "fill the gap" for them? Any ideas anyone???

bobdot... When the ship is out, the only way you have to communicate is via e-mail, through their military e-mail address. Hopefully she will send you an email as soon as she gets it, that way you have the correct address for her. Different "shops" have different levels of computer access, but you will develop a pattern of contact. When they are in port, they have access to a few different phone plans. The best one by far is a plan offered by "Softbank" from time to time. I believe it costs them 70.00 a month, and they have unlimited calling to the U.S. They don't offer that plan all the time, but fairly frequently, so it's worth waiting a couple of months for if need be. They have no cell service while they are deployed, mainly because most cell phones have GPS systems built in to them, and it would make tracking the Carriers movements WAY to easy for someone that they would rather not know the in's and out's of their journey.

SANDRA, your comment about cleaning the closets brings a chuckle here. I cleaned the pantry floor and organized all the extra cleaning things .. found I have three back up bottles of Tide ... they had been one here and another there so now they are together. I scrubbed the bathroom from top to bottom and crawled under the bed so I could wash the floor ... long time since I have done more than vacuum and dust mop. I guess when you are down you get busy being productive.

Honeybee, remember that no news is good news. It's hard because my g'daughter was supposed to call before leaving but hasn't called yet. You know, they sometimes get caught up in their activities and don't get around to contacting those of us back home who are waiting to hear. Our lives revolve more about them than their lives do around us.

MaryJo, my g'daughter is looking forward to "Wog Day" and becoming a shellback. It is special. My brother has his certificate framed and hanging in his den.

Soccercyn, there are others of us going through a long deployment for the first time. Somehow the "shakedown" cruise seemed easier since it was probably going to be a short one.

I think one thing that is tough is the fact that this job is like any other ... there are good days and there are bad days. They work long hard hours and get tired so on the bad days you may get a down e-mail. Remember that they will bounce back but you won't know it for a while. On the last time out, my g'daughter told me no more positive thoughts. I responded with "I'll listen, sympathise, advise (if you wish) but I refuse to join you in the negative thoughts. That won't help you nor me."

Linda, I have watched Carrier on-line. It is available on pbs.com and I agree it is great. I would recommend it to anyone who is thinking about joining the Navy. It definitely shows the day to day life on board a ship.

Sandra, my brother and SIL gave me Navy and Marine flags for Christmas. DH rolled his eyes. I hadn't thought about flying the flag while the ship is deployed or our Marine grandson is deployed. Our nephew, a Marine, is heading out Monday for the ME and I could fly it for him. That's a cool idea. My SIL flies her flags over their entry. It looks impressive.

Also, Sandra, BZ to your son. We rely on fine young men like him. I know my g'daughter has appreciated the support of her Petty Officers.

Yes, Sandra, the Navy has been at this for a while now, and I know that they take good care of our kids. We are so lucky to have sailors like yours to watch over them, and moms like you to be the voice of experience for those of us who haven't been at this "at sea" stuff so long.

soccercyn....I check my email the second I get up in the morning, the last thing before I leave for work, the second I get home from work and the last thing before I go to bed (not to mention several times in between). Sooooooo thankful they have email access, otherwise it would do me in.

DC...good idea, putting it all in a plastic bag. I never thought of that one. I also be sure to tape over the address with clear tape so it can't be blurred. I learned that one when I worked at UPS during the Christmas season for a few years. I know that the customs form says "don't" use generalities like "food", "toilitries" etc, but I have done that myself before I read the whole form, and I never had a problem. Now I itemize more, but don't sweat it to be sure I list EVERY SINGLE item individually. I don't really even care if they open the package, I just don't want it's delivery delayed, or anything "lifted" during inspection.

katlanta...they call those "BC glasses" (birth control), cause they say that "with those dorky things...you ain't gettin any". It cracked me up when I heard that. He must have a strong immune system.....glad he has managed to avoid the "carrier crud".
Karen, he will probably get lost a few more times :>) The customs form can seem daunting at 1st. Just mark the "gift" box, not "merchandise" or they think you are selling the items inside and are more apt to open it for inspection. I just put stuff like..."candy, corn nuts, beef jerky," etc for the food stuff, and take an educated guess as to the weight. It helps to fill out the form before you seal up the box. I have never had them open anything yet for inspection.
