Karen, we are all going to find the next few months of uncertainty difficult. It will be tough on them as well. He should have his email and mailing address available for him. He may not know how to get it. His mailing address will be the same as it was on land. My granddaughter found out her military e-mail address just before they headed out in May. Sometimes you have to listen to them vent but just keep encouraging Eric.

On the customs form, I use the flat rate priority boxes for APO/FPO addresses. What fits goes at one price and that is a discounted price. I understand that printing off the label on the internet gets an additional discount. I have not tried that. You will need the long form if you are using the priority boxes. I am very general in what I put on the form, e.g., toiletries or snacks. The clerk at the post office is usually very helpful. I pick up a bunch of forms and boxes to keep on hand. Also get huge rolls of tape and be liberal with it. The boxes take a beating before they get to their destinations. I put the address inside the box as well as outside. I also use a garbage bag to line the box in case it is set out in the rain. I tape over the address so it can be blurred.

Congrats for sure Moose.....there is just something special about that E4 "Petty Officer" rank :>)
Ginny.....I'm sure "The Hooch" is almost as glad to see our sailors back in port as we are. I can only imagine how much their business dries up when the ship pulls out.

Congratulations, Moose. Ginny is right; advancement is harder to earn. So you have every reason to be proud.

Wow DC...never thought of that!! I will definitely get my passport in order now!!
Someone asked yesterday about the availability of microwaves on board. I asked Kelcie, and she asked a bunch of her friends that were around and it seemed unanamous....they all seem to have access to microwaves, so we are safe sending things that need to be "nuked"....other than N. Korea that is! :>)

Melony, I have also been told that there is uncertainty about return dates. I am reminded of when my brother was on the Midway, which at that time was forward deployed to Yokosuka. He said he went out on what was supposed to be a 10-day cruise and returned four months later. So it does happen. I also think the uncertainty is hard on the Sailors.

I am hoping for a visit next spring but will not make my reservations too far in advance.

Ginny, you mentioned having your passport ready. This is good advice for all of us. If your Sailor had a medical emergency, you would be prepared to travel at a moment's notice. This may be something none of us want to consider, but it is a reality. I have my granddaughter's medical power of attorney and I would not want something to delay me from going if need be.

Katlanta, I did a couple of searches for September and could find seats. Now they were priced more like $1200 to $1500 for non-refundable coach seats. I do wonder how one makes plans for when the ship will be in port. I would definitely recommend purchasing insurance against the possibility of the ship being deployed. You would need to double check the conditions because lots of insurance is for medical reasons only, and that medical is in case you or another traveler becomes sick.

katlanta, you might try going directly to the Airlines, I know that they sell only a specific number of seats to places like travelocity and the other booking sights, but in actuality, there are probably seats available. If the online price isn't that great, check with a local travel agent, sometimes they can get you a good deal and their access to seats isn't as limited as internet travel sites.

I'll probably get a call from Kelcie tonight. I'll try to remember to ask her about the microwave. I also had sent a couple of things that would need access to one.

Had a wonderful long chat with my granddaughter last night. I so much prefer it when they are in port.

BigDMom, your sailor on a stick is great! It is kind of like a "Flat Stanley." bet your son will enjoy it. There was a Mom on another group who took her daughter's puffer fish all over while her daughter was in BC. She would take pictures and comment that Puffy was still looking for her daughter but couldn't find her. The last picture was at PIR ... Puffy found her daughter. I thought it was a fun idea as well.

While in general I do not like Facebook, I love the GW page and like Grandma, I check it out every morning, even when they are in port like now. I love to see the Sailor of the Day and the pictures of day-to-day operations. Of course, I got really excited when my granddaughter's picture was posted.

NavyFam, you are right about being able to e-mail on board the ship without verifying your sailor's info. You just need his/her address.
Comment by Mollie...Kelcies Mom on June 10, 2010 at 10:25am
Sandy, you really should think about getting on facebook. The GW posts pictures almost daily on their facebook page when they are underway. It's like "Where's Waldo", only "where's my sailor". I'm sure everyone else scours the pictures looking for their loved one :>) I know I do !!
