Mollie,
Didn't the ship just go thru a change of command not to long ago? My hubby said you were spot on. Hubby also says MISSION FIRST SAILORS ALWAYS. I also read on a email we get from military.com that they are working on ridding the Navy of incompetent Commanders. They have already relieved some Commanding Officers of their command for poor performance.
Hubby says the Navy is not what it was when he enlisted in 1988. It is so politcal now.

I've tried to stress to my daughter that the Navy is just a microcosim of society as a whole. You have nice people, jerks, ambitious people, lazy people, honest people, thieves etc. A large part of growing up is learning how to deal with all types of personalities.

Momof2sailors..It sounds like your husband knew how to LEAD people, not just try to MANAGE them. My daughter has the utmost respect for LEADERS. As do we all. I'm not actually sure that I am using the correct terminology when I say she is not to impressed with her "Command". I am referring to the people just above her I think.
Sue, I know that they are putting in REALLY long days, I'm sure you will hear from him soon.
Thomas's mom....will certainly keep him in my prayers, it truly sounds like he is the type of sailor that we NEED.

From what I understand on the ships they have forced PT. So more than likely she would loose weight. With all the stairs they have to go up and down. When on shore duty they do get kinda lazy. Not all commands do mandatory PT. At mu hubby's last command they had to do 1 PT day together and 2 on their own. Well we all know how that works. Hubby was lazy the 6 days out of 7. But he would throw himself in the middle of a baseketball game with kids half his age on that 1 mandatory day. He is paying for it now. OOCH!! But I warned him.

Lynda,
My question is who is measuring these kids? Did she all of a sudden get osteoporosis?
These kids need to check and double check their height measurement when it is taken. And like I said earlier: STAND UP STRAIGHT AND TALL AND NO SLOUCHING. What was their height when they went to boot camp?
Comment by momof2sailors on May 24, 2010 at 3:39pm
I almost forgot... Tell your son to make sure he is not slouching when getting his height measured. Hold his head up and stand tall....

Thomas' Mom,
No problem. If you have anymore questions just ask and if hubby doesn't know the answer he can atleast point you in the direction you need to go. I wish the best of luck to your son and will keep praying for him.

I think the link I put on here isn't correct. So let me try again: http://www.navy-prt.com/maleweight.html

There is a difference in the weight requirement of about 10 lbs. And his height needs to be measured without shoes on.

Mama Nonie,
My husbands says that when he retired he felt like he was fired. What a dork!! I told him that after 20 yrs and 12 days that he very well deserved his retirement. His Navy Kids did not want him to retire. His Chief did not want to see him go. But because he was high tenure he had to retire. But he loved the Navy Life and misses it. And I agree with you Lazyness is taught. That is one thing that his Navy Kids knew they would not get away with. If hubby had to babysit then there was crap to pay. I will tell hubby what you said.

Thomas Mom,
I don't know for sure if it would make a difference. But getting the height corrected on his record might make a difference on his weight req.
http://www.navy-prt.com/uirement.
The weight requirement for 6'2 is 211 lbs.

Sue,
They can email from the navy.mil email anytime. They do not have access to their yahoo, gmail or hotmail accounts while on the ship. I just found this out when I got a surprise email Sunday morning from my son. He said he almost forgot about his shipboard email account.

Thomas' Mom,
Your son needs to get his height info corrected on his record. And I am praying for your son. Unfortuanly their are some people in the Navy that let their jobs go to their heads.
When my husband first took over a shop at his last duty station he was trying to get it back into shape. Some of the kids were being disrepectful towards him in a meeting they were having. They didn't like that they were actually having to work the correct way. But one of the kids spoke up and got on to those who were acting out and said to them: Do you guys not realize he is trying to help us? He is the only LPO who has actually got out here and works along side of us. And not just sit in the office playing with their thumbs..
He would even get out and play basketball with kids half his age. Now he is paying the price for that. LOLOLOL everything in his body hurts. I warned him, but he did not listen to me.
Let me tell you what a change in that shop after that. There were 3 shops that hubby was able to straighten out before his retirement. Hubby got right in the mix with everyone and showed them that he was no better than them. We still get calls from his "NAVY KIDS" to this day. That is how much respect they have for him.
Hopefully your son can find someone that takes the same kind of interest in his career as my husband took in his and his NAVY KIDS.

Oh Thomas's mom....that stinks. My daughter has not been to happy with the command either. She said that there is a TON of B.S. that goes on. Does your son have someone closer to him (further down the chain of command) that can go to bat for him? My daughter was at a small base prior to the GW assignment, and they were much more personally involved with their officers. That really kept a lot of B.S. from flowing downhill so much.
Sue, they do have access to computers, but each area has limited access, so if his section has a TON of people in it, it can be hard for them to get computer time. I do believe that there are phones, but they have to have a phone card, and I hear that lines are REALLY long. I haven't talked to my daughter since they left, but I get a quick e-mail most days. Sue, will try to contact you on your email directly.
