OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

IMPORTANT:

This morning I received a copy of an e-mail that was sent out by an IT department at the University of Florida. There was a link in the e-mail about security on copiers. I strongly encourage each of you to watch the video on the link. Did you know that copiers have hard drives and that a copy of whatever is copied, faxed or scanned is kept on the hard drive? This is a tremendous identify theft potential. It is unnecessary because copier companies offer a component that would remove this information and protect us. The component costs around $500 per machine. We need to start a campaign to get Congress to require this component on all machines. I don't want to be an alarmist but not only could it be an identify theft risk for you, it could also be a security risk for our nation. Please watch the video.

Good afternoon!

I find that the best way to e-mail my granddaughter is on Facebook. For some reason, she can find time to check out FB and post a status but can't quite send an e-mail home. I shall be sad when they deploy because Skype will go. We have really enjoyed that.

CFS, Sandra is right in that even if your sailor did tell you when they are leaving, it should not be posted here or anywhere else. That is one reason why it is better not to know ... It's too easy to slip. Also, as deployment approaches the sailors are very busy getting everything squared away. They know that they are alright and assume you are as well so time slips by without touching base. Meanwhile at home we want to hear from them.

Grandma, you are not the only Grandmom on N4M. I hope that your grandson is soon able to enjoy his experience in Japan. It has a lot to offer but you have to look for it.

I was a Navy brat and moved a lot. Although I did not enjoy moving all the time, I did learn to find good in wherever I was. Listen to the venting but don't feed it.

I have been forcing myself to believe this trip is going to be fun but now I am getting scared as the time approaches..Those of you whose sailors have gone before, what types of things did they do? Have they ever been in any dangerous situations? Can you say here?

My granddaughter is at Atsugi and she said she was attending classes to learn how to pack things for while they are at sea. I asked why, and whether she was coming back to the same room. She said she would be back in the same room but that it was for safety. Right now she is leaning towards not taking her laptop on board. Given all the theft I have read about, that sounds like a sensible decision.

I wander if it is to prevent theft?
