I would also get renters insurance. I can tell you one thing when my husband was active duty and the LPO of his DIV he did not put up with this kind of crap. And can someone tell me if these bikes have to be registered then why can't the registration be looked up and the person notified the bike was found? When my son bought his bike he had to go register it.

Becky,
I wish I knew who to call. These kids work hard for the few luxury items thay can have on a ship. For a few idiots to go and steal from them. It just really PISSES me off.

OK I just got off the phone with USAA 800-531-8722. Yes cell phones would be covered under a renters insurance policy. The lowest deductible they have is 250.00.
Has anyone contacted the Ombudsman for the ship about the thefts going on? Or would that make our kids targets?

My son just emailed us and told us that his phone was stolen. If your sailors have any expensive stuff with them I would suggest getting renters insurance for them.

Michele...if I can make a suggestion...don't go until the end of March or very beginning of April. We went the first 2 weeks of March and were to early for a lot of the festivals and cherry blossoms. But it still was a wonderful trip!

Natalie. We are never without our phones either but did not miss them in Japan. We had the laptop and SKYPE. We used that to call our family in the states. SKYPE on your laptop can be used as a phone. We put $10 on it to use as a telephone and we called on it at least a dozen times and came home with money still on the plan.

If you are going to Yokusko, go to the USO on base. There are phones that the sailors can use to call the states at no charge to them. I found this out yesterday from the ombudsman of the GW. It might be that if he is with you or you have Military ID yourself you might be able to use them. Check it out before putting the money out to rent one.

Natalie...just for info, there is an ATM on the base that you can use your bank card to get both American and Janpense money. On base you can use American money.

Natalie....be sure and have your son get your approvals on the gate pass before you get there. We never had any trouble coming and going with the pass without our sailor present.

Natalie, I am so jealous ... well not really but I do wish I were getting ready to go to Japan as well. I hope that you have a wonderful trip. I think it would be marvelous to go during the cherry blossom time. I love to see the cherry trees in full bloom!

Karyn, I am looking forward to seeing some pictures of your visit.

AlexsMom, our granddaughter left JAX on Friday morning but her flight to Japan from Seattle was not until Saturday night, actually at 1:00 a.m. on Sunday. We received a call around 8:30 telling us she was in Anchorage and would be laying over there for a couple of hours. I heard from her this morning around 5:00 a.m. EDT. Her sponsor allowed her to use his phone to call here. She sounded very tired and discouraged. I think it is overwhelming a bit but I suspect she will soon get into the swing of things. Her main comment was that she needed to get a phone and Internet soon. I hope you hear soon because I know how reassuring it is to get the phone call.
