Great to hear  Peter's Mom...yup, they work long hours at sea...hit the bed and get up to do it again, mine says he works every day when not in port....and has watch or duty rotation when in port.

My sailor has been on deployment at sea for 20 out of the last 24 months, 3 different carriers...he has Verizon too, I keep his phone on but calls have only came when in port, well, the second they are in port..lol...he does use his phone to FB message..not sure 100% but I think all service is scrambled plus the ship calls are monitored, as well as email..have you noticed that on the emails?? sometimes they are "stamped" that they were read.....

Just for all to know, I received an email from my son today.  He said he received my care package.  I sent it about a week after he left.  So, I'd say it took two weeks!  He says he working long days, and is tired at the end of the day!  Glad to hear from him!

I do have a question, if anyone knows...  He has an international plan with Verizon Wireless.  Is he able to make any calls/texts from the ship?  OR does he have to wait for a port to have service?  Just wondering?

Great news, JB4JH...figured it was a nasty rumor, just bc of the hostile places my sailor had received packages at before....thanks for letting us know....:)

Hello GW group....

I sent my sailor an email and FB message with information on the port, my friend was raised there and the family spends summers there at their family home....I also asked about the mail, haven't heard back yet....as packages are important....I remember him saying before on another deployment, they couldn't figure out how to "send" packages home, as he wanted to mail gifts instead of storing them..those of you that have sailors on the ship, did you ask the GW ombudsman??

I got a couple of questions on some groups about the new address format...I pulled this off the USS GW FB page:

GW Friends and Family,

As of May 1, 2015, the USPS Mailing Address for your favorite Sailor has the following format:

(RATE/RANK) LAST NAME, FIRST

USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73)

UNIT 100148 BOX ###

FPO AP 96650

You will need to contact your Sailor to get their specific BOX #.  As of August 1, 2015, the current mailing address for USS GEORGE WASHINGTON will no longer be active, and letters/packages sent will be returned. We LOVE hearing from you all, and receiving the mail you send.  As always, thank you for your support!

Howdy ladies!

Got a phone call from my sailor this morning - made my day! Said he's been trying to call for last couple weeks but couldn't get out hhmmmm perhaps there was something up with that unknown nothing call Brooke got. Hopefully calls will be rolling in soon for everyone.

Mary - I'm beginning to wonder if there is something to that rumor about no mail. When I told my son I mailed a package last week he laughed and said "thanks but I doubt if I get it anytime soon". He said his shop has been trying to mail out packages but can't, he mentioned something about no international account but seemed rather clueless as to what the problem was. Guess we should all just keep our fingers crossed!

Ghost peppers - WOW those are HOT HOT HOT! Odi, my son rarely talks about what he's actually doing. When I ask I normally get a "I'm fine, doing good" He too just wants to hear news from home. I can always tell by the sound of his voice how he's really doing. Luckily for me he's usually in a good mood!

No "Sailor of the Day" for me but thanks for the notice BeachBunny

Hope you all have a wonderful day!

Hello USS GW group.....

Ghost peppers Odi...oh, man..he likes it HOT!...do you dry them? make sauce out of them?...you can send him some to add it the bland food...lol

I checked the tracking number on the package I sent, it said that it left the Chicago for it's destination...we'll see how long that takes...usually the packages come when they are close to a DOD base or port..I haven't heard the rumor that Mary has.

My sailor sent a FB message asking about a tourist spot for upcoming port..he must be making places with his buddies...MWR also offers tours and volunteer work at ports and sometimes a sports event to watch or participate in.

Carriers FB page posted some Sailor of the Day, pictures...check them out and see if one is your sailor...don't have FB page, borrow one...I hop on my hubbies work FB to follow the boat when my sailor is out to sea...oh, wait...that's most of the time...lol....
