Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

My son also called and said Japan was a possibility.  I am new at this.  This is his first deployment.  Where do you go to get updates on the GreeBay?

It's my understanding that the only phone cards that work on the ship's phones are the "ship to shore cards"  they supposedly can be purchased at the NEX, or  onboard the ship's store.  The NEX supposedly has a link that we can send to deployed sailors without NEX privleges.    the International cards supposedly only work at a port IF they find the time to find a phone there.  Mine never would.  Don't know about the newer ships but the older ones were supposedly that way.

This was posted by another mother…I know I fit 5, 6, 8 and 9 to a tee:

You know when your soldier is deployed when

  1. You sleep with your cell phone on your pillow.
  2. 2. You use an entire bottle of his cologne so you can smell him around you.
  3. You get nervous every time the phone rings or you hear a knock at your door.
  4. 4. The shoes he left in the middle of the room are now oddly comforting.
  5. The postal clerk knows you by name.
  6. You buy beef jerky every time you go to the grocery store.
  7. You check your e-mail every 5 minutes, including in the middle of the night.
  8. You have enough priority boxes, packing tape and customs forms for his entire unit.
  9. You have a ton of friends with deployed soldiers you’ve never actually met because they’re all online.
  10. You don’t just tie a yellow ribbon around a tree outside, you time one around your heart.
