Thanks Paymaster for the warning about sending homemade goodies. Does it make a difference if you vacuum seal them? or no real benefit from the heat.
Congrats Dee on your younger son passing the Navy Diver Test
Just sharing some information regarding sending homemade goodies. When our son was deployed to the middle east they warned us about sending things made with milk and eggs. Remember that your packages may sit and wait at a location for a week or so before being delivered to the ship. The heat in these location my be extreme which works against homemade goodies.
As to postage they use regular stamps the same as you do.
Someone said on one site that the calling cards are available thru the Navy store - we can order and somehow they get to the ship. I was going to email ombudsman and see if they know anything about it. (Only certain cards work on the ship) I'm new at this too ..
I sent my son 4 boxes so far- dried fruits, nuts, his favorite protein bars, some candy, powdered gatorade(jar), powdered kool aid (jars) pictures from home, wipes, hand sanitizer and used loose candy(indiv wrapped as packing material). Got a lot of these ideas from others on the Comstock site. I thought about sending his favorite crackers, raman noodles, magazines, cards etc He has to send me a list of books . The only things he really asked for were drinks. One of the ladies on the Comstock site has made apple pie in Mason jars and sent it last time her son was gone. Haven't tried that yet.
Goodmorning...getting some things ready. I like the card idea, alot of birthdays etc coming up. My daughter too didn't ask for much. Some chocolate and more chocolate. I am sending her those microwave in the bowl fudge brownie things. Not homemade but she did enjoy them once when i bought them. Cup of noddle soups and cocoa. She said she needed black socks and tshirts. I plan on sending her an international calling card too.
Did anyone watch the new lifetime show called Coming Home the other night??
Please if anyone hears from their sailors please give a thumbs up so to speak.
So sorry Dee to hear about your loss.
Mine asks for very little. So he gets what I want him to have.
So I sent girl scout cookies, almonds, his favorite candy, books, single drink packs, gum, lifesavers, deck of cards and dice.
I also include Easter cards for the kids, that way he can send his children cards. I also included stamps.
Has anyone mailed a box off to their sailor?
If you did what did send in your box?
Dee....Sorry to hear of your loss. Your Father In Law put up a good fight, may he rest in peace. I know you mentioned he had been ill since the end of Jan.
James will get good support on the ship during this time.
The pillowcase started because I had worked on the pillowcase project for the USS Lincoln. To make a long story short my son asked me to do pillowcases for the Green Bay. He got permission from the Capt. for us to do this project.
There are some other things that come into play with this projects and if your interested in doing something like this for the Boxer, please pm and I will be more than happy to share with you.
Its been a fun project and I have very much enjoyed doing it and getting to know so many new people.
The pillowcase idea is awesome. Sure would like to see some pics of some of the ones that were made. Let me know of any upcoming projects.
Hope all is doing wel!! I am missing my daughter too.
Cute baby pics Sarah. I have a little guy too, well he is going to turn six soon. He keeps me busy but I love every minute. I know how fast they can grow up, my daughter now a true sailor girl.
