Mary.....I live in northern California, outside Sacramento.

My son just left for an Independent Assignment to Afghanstan til August when he will join the Green Bay.

So will your son be home the Thanksgiving?

We are having dinner here at the house with our daughter who lives here in town and several friends.

Mary.....Welcome to our little group. I am looking forward to hearing more about what is going on with the ship, since my son will not join the ship until later in 2009.

What part of the country do you live?

Kim....Yes, CA is a big state.

He is a LT and Pilot of MH-60 Seahawk. He is currently slated for an IA to Afhganistan this month. He is schedule to be gone 9 months. On his return he is slated to join the Green Bay.

Jarrod entered the Navy through USNA in 1997 and graduated in May 2001. He married his high school sweetheart the day after graduation. Megan has followed Jarrod through ground school, flight school and survival school. She an outstanding young woman and I can not say enough good things about her!

As thing are going I think Jarrod will stay in the full 20 years. I know he wants to get his masters through the Navy War College and I think so long as they offer him that after his assignment with the Green Bay he will stay.

Yes, I agree that the Navy has many opps to offer young people and with the ecom the way it is right now they are secure in there jobs.

We are heading out to see our son in VA, this week to help him get read for his IA assignment. There is always so much to do around a house before you has to leave.

Talk to you soon.

Kim....Unfortuntely San Diego is about a 10 hour drive from where we live. But its only about an hour and half flight.

I just hope this assingment comes through. Our son has been gone since 1997 and has never been stationed on the west coast. Since we now have two little granddaughters, it will be great having them on at least the same coast. I will at least get to seen them more often than the every three months I get to see them now.

Kim....Thanks for starting this group. I am sure I will be what they call a lurker, since my son will not join the ship until later in 2009. I look forward to hearing about what is going on with the Ship. I only know a little bit its been christened and is still being worked on in New Orleans and its commisioning is to take place in Long Beach at the early part of 2009.
