Welcome PROUDSAILORMOM! This group is more for mutual support, learning about life in the Navy and sharing info with each other. As members of the greater Navy 'family,' we are required to observe the Navy's Operational Security guidelines, so please see Discussion above with that name and read the details. To keep our sailors safe, we do not discuss ship movements in advance except in very general terms. The ship's command has an official Family Readiness Group and an Ombudsman Team. Info about what those are, and how to communicate with them, is in another Discussion, above. Is your sailor already with the Iwo Jima, and what does he/she do?
Is this where I need to be to find out what the Iwo Jima is up to? As in when they leave and return? When they deploy, how do we know when they are going to return so we can be there to welcome them home? Sorry for the questions.
What a deal! "Operation J.I.N.G.L.E. - Are you living on the ship, barracks, or a single Sailor PPV? Is your family thinking about visiting Hampton Roads during the Christmas holiday? Hotel rooms are available in Virginia Beach and Norfolk, Dec 23 - 26, 3 nights, for $10 a night. The entire reservation fee will be donated to the Navy-Marine Relief Society from the Hotel/Motel Associations and Convention and Visitors Bureaus of Norfolk and Virginia Beach. Contact Loretta Russell, Norfolk Navy Marine Relief Society, 757-322-1175 or email at loretta.russell@nmcrs.org."
More on the start of the Iwo ARG migration to Mayport -
"Not only will the group’s arrival have an immediate impact on existing businesses, but in attracting new businesses as well…(The ARG) will be a welcome addition to Mayport, which has seen its numbers decline significantly since a high in the 1980s – especially after the decommissioning of the last of Mayport’s aircraft carriers, the USS John F. Kennedy.
The Iwo Jima ARG represents the first significant addition to Mayport’s manpower since the destroyer Farragut arrived in 2005." http://mayportmirror.jacksonville.com/news/metro/2013-12-03/story/u...
From the Navy Times/Associated Press:
The first of three Virginia-based Navy ships is heading to a new homeport in Florida this week.
The amphibious transport dock USS New York will leave Norfolk Naval Station on Wednesday and move to Mayport Naval Station in Jacksonville, Fla.
The Virginian-Pilot reports that the amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima and the dock landing ship USS Fort McHenry will move to Mayport in 2014.
The Iwo Jima is undergoing work at a Norfolk shipyard. The Fort McHenry currently is based at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek.
The New York has a crew of about 350 sailors. The Fort McHenry has about 400 sailors and the Iwo Jima has about 1,100 sailors.
