Hi everyone, my son left today for Japan, I did really good in the airport, enjoyed every second I had with him, came home and took a nap since it was an early day for us, woke up was still doing ok, but all of a sudden...it hit me !!! Now I feel a total melt down coming on. I always said it takes a special Mom to be a military Mom But how do you Moms do this? I know it will get better with time, but am I over reacting? Is this normal? This is my first...straight out of  BC.

Hi Moms! Welcome! Clothing is good (shirts to wear when off the ship & yes long johns-he asked for black or navy blue!) My son was there for last winter and he said he loved them, but he is a California Boy! I also have sent him hats from his favorite teams with a zip up hat holder (holds max 8 hats) He said it helped keep his hats organized.

I do know they are underway so like Beatrizm said I am sure they take the appropriate precautions.

Tortuga is at sea on manuevers, don't know exactly where but I imagine they are aware and taking precautions.

Saw the curtains under the "care package items" group. The point is, if no one else uses them, I'm sure as the new guy; my kid would sooner throw them overboard than use it.

Hi All,  just joined as my son was assigned to the Tortuga as of today and will arrive sometime early Oct.  This is his first assignment so i am very unsure of what to expect, but i am excited for him to get out and about and begin this exciting new adventure!  I look forward to chatting with all of you :)

I believe their racks have curtains, which provide a little privacy but do nothing about noise.

Does anyone's sailor have one of those curtains that they were talking about on the  gifts for sailors group or do they not fit the racks on this ship... better yet; will it get used or will my son ask if I think he is a dork if I buy him one?

Thanks beatrizm, good suggestions as I wasn't sure about the communication things. The NEX cards are a great idea as my son is a junk food king and selective about it. I have lived in Wisconsin for 10 years now, and I still am not used to the cold as I was raised much farther south and so was he for most of his life. I always wondered why many up here had woodstoves, but I can tell you we eventually got one and it roars most of the winter (which here is about 9 months) to get that warm feeling. Long story short, I'm sure those long johns will be a much appreciated suggestion.

thanks, again
