Annie, he should be able to have his cell phone and laptop if he has one and maybe some boxers. You can send anything else after he has been there a few days and knows what he can have and has room for. He may not be able to use the laptop right away but it shouldn't be a problem to have it and put it away until he can have it.

I am getting mixed messages about what to bring to PIR for what they can have afterward. My son will be at school at GL for about three weeks, then I don't know where. Can he have anything during this time or do I have to wait till he actually gets to his duty station?

Sorry I meant under 25.

There's a surcharge daily for the rental cars if you're under 21.  I know it's at least 25 dollars a day but I think it might be more aruond 35.  It's pretty substantial.

Comment by AngelW (Ship 07 Div 060) on January 6, 2012 at 4:02pm

Noemi, i dont know about the charge for the rental car, but there is a big chance of snow in early February.  The cab is very reasonable and they know how to drive in those conditions.  The weather is the reason i had to rethink renting a car.  Just let me know if you want to share the cab.

I have a question? Ive been looking for car rentals and I found one that really good, but im kinda lost on what it said Im only 21 and I know u have to be over 25 to get able to get a cheap car. my question is, Would i have to pay extra since Im only 21??

Comment by diannep on January 6, 2012 at 3:10pm

I think it stands for "Desperately Desired" personal care items....  :-)

I have NO IDEA what "DD"is...! My phone decided to throw that in!
Comment by FireTeamLeaderWife aka FTLW on January 6, 2012 at 1:28pm
When the recruits arrive at BC they are given what they need as far DD personal care items. They are given a NEX card (comes out of their pay) with about $150.00 (last I heard...my son thinks it was $200.00), to use to purchase more necessary items for the duration of BC. So there is no need to "worry" that they don't have money...but the NEX card as a gift( as Gayle has said hers was for Christmas) is a nice idea...but I wouldn't do it as a rule of thumb. In other words don't tell family and friends to send them. I would put it last on my list of "things to but or send" as something they need. Phone card, Bandaids, address labels, etc...would be higher up!
They do prefer them to use the NEX card over a debit card as it is not "private" like a debit card. Some have funds left over!
I sent my son his debit card so he could have it if needed for pictures. He used his personal account but had not received the card before he left. Yeah...me too Gayle!
