For any New members (Welcome to all!) and just a reminder...this will be posted for the first few weeks of Boot Camp.
Community Guidelines and OPSEC
Hello Everyone.
Safety for your SR (future Sailor) and you!
Sailors LAST names are NOT allowed anywhere on this site. If your last name is different from your sailors it is still not recommended.
FIRST names ARE allowed but I, and some of the other “veteran” moms, will most often advise you not to use them. This is a public forum and anyone can read the posts-they do not have to be a member (if the group is set to private, the public cannot read but all N4M members can-so all you have to do is join) While they use their last names in BC (in fact they don't usually, if ever, find out each other’s first names until the end of BC), the RDC's know who they are and can then, with the right amount of info, link them up to you. So, let’s say you use your last name in your N4M name, post a picture of your SR...easy to match up...and so on.
Why does that matter? Your SR's are trying to get through BC with as little undue attention as possible. "Fly under the radar", so to speak. There have been reports from moms of their recruits being matched up with them. Some are just identified…some get IT (Intensive Training), I am guessing this depends on WHAT is posted…I know of one mom who said that her son had to do 5 push-ups just for every time she posted!
The MOST important reason for being discreet is OPSEC-Operational Security. This is a way of life for us now. It will be for your Sailors career and for some of them, even more so, depending on their individual security clearance. Some moms have mentioned that even today after years they do not know EXACTLY what their sailor does.
SPECOPS...definitely need to be VERY careful.

Welcome Carole!
LaLa - scarf is lovely! Hey...I ACTUALLY sat down and did a CRAFT last night! (I MISS it) Made an explosion box for scrapbooking...it came out nice...I am rusty and have to work on my cuttting technique! "Good" for a trial one! FUN!

For those with there on ID Here is the Navy Gateway Inn:
http://dodlodging.net/NS_GREATLAKES.HTM
This is the Site for Naval Station Great Lakes with info on the Gateway Inn...just thought I would post if you want to "explore" information about Naval Station Great lakes and see hjust how big it is...it says it is "like a city"...and it is!
http://cnic.navy.mil/GreatLakes/FleetAndFamilyReadiness/HousingAndL...
P.S. I will probably condense everything into a discussion! LOL
Arwen is actually talking about the Navy Lodge (there phone number has INN in it so it's a little confusing)...there is a Navy Gateway Inn also...but that is on the Main base and you need ID.
Here is info on the Lodge (I stayed there as well as LaLa) and the Gateway Inn for those with there own/dependant ID.
I stayed at the Navy Lodge. It is clean and comfortable....they do have SOME rooms with kitchenettes (stove top but no oven)...first come, first serve. I had two queen beds with a rollaway, microwave with a small fridge. There is a laundry (Used it!) coffee 24/7, vending machines, computer with a printer on each floor (for a fee - these look just like the ones at RTC for the recruits!). They can give you a pass to the small NEX shoppette down the street. They do a brown bag breakfast with a bagel, cream cheese, chewy granola bar and large bottle of OJ. My sons loved this! It was fresh and read to go! Was great for PIR day. They do not have shuttle service...I drove a rental which I really liked!
This one will ask form a "Sponsor". You should be able to give your new Sailors name and rate (E-1, E-2, E-3)...then I believe you bring them by to verify the info. I stayed with my dependant ID from hubby and that's what they asked for.
The Navy Lodge is not within the gates of base but off site in a housing area (still "the base" though) about 2.5 mile drive from it to Gate 8 on Ohio street...but it's a mile if you were to climb over everything in the way!
Naval Station Great Lakes is HUGE and spread out. Thje Main Commisary is a few miles from base...I was confused at first becasue I am so used to everything being on a Base after you pass the gate! LOL The buildings are all that dings are that brick color that I love and I was just itching to walk all over RTC!
There is a Navy Gateway Inn on the Main Great Lakes Base...that one you need ID for...I know of some wives who have stayed there.
Good idea Trisha!
I started a discussion so that each ship/div group could post what color of scarf they wanted to wear. This way we don't have to keep looking through the comments to try to find what each as said, and we only have to look one place. :)

Thanks Angel, I will check my emails in just a moment for your ribbons order. As far as wearing red that is a way to support all of our military members. It is not to show support for or against any war. It is more about supporting all of the bravest men and women who choose freely to protect us and serve our country. There is a growing campaign to wear red on Fridays to show the world your support. The color red was chosen because it is the color of fire and blood, so it is associated with energy, war, danger, strength, power, determination as well as passion, desire, and love. It symbolizes trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, faith, truth, and heaven. Besides it goes with everything right? :-) I think red will be a good choice for your scarves whether it is for your division and maybe brother division or your whole PIR group. It will make you stand out in a crowd I'm sure.
And yes, I do make scarves (me and my step-daughter) We make the fleece ones in pretty much any solid color you want. And we can do them in prints as well. We have American Flag, blue and white with stars, and another one that is called Navy Block and is mostly Navy Blue, black, white and gray. It has the Navy emblem, US Navy and ships on it. The single layered solid colored ones are $8.00 and the print ones are $10, the double thick sewn solid ones and fringed ones are $14 and you can choose one color or two. The three colored fringed ones are $16. In the fringed ones the Navy Blue and Gold looks really good. My step-daughter and I actually make these for her and my sons fund raiser for Senior trip. They are both seniors, my son helps by driving her for deliveries lol. He said no one would want a scarf that he made haha. Here is a pic of a fringed one done in our school colors since it is the hardest to imagine. I will put some more pics on my facebook page later today.
Welcome Carolecogarl! You're gonna love it here. :)
We took the shuttle from Residence Inn. Chose the 6:30 shuttle (taxi operating as a shuttle - $3/pp each way). Would do it the same way again. Ramada has its own shuttle...either their own van or a taxi "shuttle" service that they provide to guests for free.
For those deciding which airport to fly into. Consider Milwaukee. It is a 45 minute drive to GL (interstate). No traffic. Southwest flies there and they have no change fee (we had to change our reservations when my son was there...sorry I didn't book with Southwest!)...and 2 bags ship for free. Southwest also flies into Chicago-Midway, but that is a longer drive to GL with more traffic. If you choose to book into Milwaukee, and you have a sailor who will be flying out the day after PIR---and you plan on an airport visit with your sailor---be sure to book out your return flight from Milwaukee very late in the day or even the next day...so you don't miss any time with your sailor. Usually booking into Milwaukee is cheaper than Chicago, but not always. So check fares for both.
