NavyMom:  I agree with Sandy...you will have great experience to pass on to these ladies, even from years back.  I think your encouragement will mean alot to them.

Just a reminder, ladies, that usually they cannot write their personal letters for about 2 weeks, until their Recruit Mail Petty Officer is trained.  So your first personal letter may not arrive for another 10 days or so.  Like Sandy said, letter writing day in the beginning is Sunday (they will get more writing days added as bootcamp goes on)....but I would be surprised if they had their recruit trained by today...so expecting that the first letters will be written next Sunday.  It will be quite special when it arrives!

Welcome to the new members here today!  There are alot of us N4Moms veterans on here to help out.  Please post any questions you like...we try to answer them all at any time!

NavyMom. I am sure you will be a great help to other families in this group. The basics of boot camp is still the same. From what I have heard from others. It has not changed that much. I have a Navy friend who was in boot camp in the 90's. I talk about my son's experiences there with her. It brings back memories for her.

ChyanAlyse, about a week from now for you. Sounds like you will get your letter next Thursday, Friday or Saturday. Letter writing day for them is Sunday. Letters go out Monday.

Mombychoice. I wondering too about how SR arriving a few days late at boot camp with change things. Hopefully not enough to make the Commander change the PIR date.

My boyfriend got to bootcamp at 1:50 AM on 8/23. We got his box on Thursday. How many more days until we get the form letter do y'all think?

Our son also left on Tues. Aug. 23 so it seems that this would be the PIR date. However since several airports were closed up and down the east coast it may throw some of the recruits a few days later getting to GL; not sure if that will delay making enough ships/div or not. We will all hope for the best.

Thank you everyone. I really appreciate your advice and I came to my senses!!  I'm waiting...  I'm a Navy veteran myself but boot camp has evolved greatly since the stone age when I served. LOL!

Welcome SheilaD...We are all in the boat (pun intended!)

@Diannep: Glad your son is OK. From the TV news looked like they got hit pretty hard.

Comment by SheilaD on August 28, 2011 at 2:13pm

I think this is the right date for my son - he also left on 8/23!  Got the box in only 3 days, so I hope his form letter is coming soon!

Sailor survived the storm in NewportNews but is complaining about no showers because he is on the dry docked carrier...in repair...showers not working!  40 hours and no shower.  I reminded him that when he arrived at bc, they didn't get to shower for 40 hours (they have to stay up the first night they arrive...all night...).  He said it was 'disgusting."  I say...if the worst of his problems is that he can't shower, he is ok!

He just texted again.  Off the carrier now....back in barracks...showered and headed to lunch!  So life is good again!  These young people....geeez!
