Whew...that was a REALLY LONG and HARD day yesterday. We woke up at 5:30am and got ourselves ready and ate breakfast at our hotel. Then we got to MEPS around 8am. He got to hang out with us for part of the time until his swearing in ceremony which was REALLY cool! They also let us take pictures of him signing his contract too. Then they let us drive him to the airport. We made a quick stop at a Dutch Bros because Jonathan kept telling us how cool they were. Well...it was just a drive up window, but the coffee was really good. He didn't drink any and he didn't even eat the sandwich they sent with him. Silly boy. We got him checked in at the counter at the airport and asked if we could get passes to the gate, but they wouldn't let us. They told us they only do that for those who are getting deployed. So...we stopped by the gift shop and then hung out near the TSA checkpoint for a few. We could tell he was getting anxious, so we ended up saying our "see ya laters" and let him go. I took pics of him going through security and then it was all over. We wanted to see his plane take off, so we drove around the airport looking for a good place to watch from. It turns out there was a military museum really close to the airport and near the runway. So...we walked around outside checking out the tanks and planes until his plane took off. Then we watched it til it disappeared. He had a stopover in Phoenix which meant he got to fly over the Grand Canyon, so he is lucky that he got a window seat. We got another text from him when he landed in Chicago and I made sure to instruct him to go eat with his voucher before he checked into the USO. He told us that they ate Chinese food. He shipped out with another guy from our recruiting office. The guy is from China or another Asian country and doesn't speak a lot of English, so they put Jonathan in charge of their group. COOL EH?
We walked in the door from our trip about 9:30pm and we were so tired we headed straight to bed. I was going to try to stay up and watch a movie, but I couldn't keep my eyes open. I was so afraid I would miss Jonathan's "I'm Here" call, but thankfully I heard my phone when it rang at 11:30pm.
I woke up this morning and the first thing on my mind was what time it was in Chicago and what he was probably doing at that time. I think I'll be waking up like that every day. I started writing letters yesterday. It's kinda awkward though since he won't even get them for two weeks. But...I'm writing. We have begun a NEW Countdown!
