When does Candio stage start??
Comment by FLMOM on August 16, 2010 at 7:22am
Hey Rosemarie,
My son did not take a car. His things were stored in a closet at OCS along with others. My older son didn't drive either, but kept his things in a classmates car that did drive up. The only thing he took that he didn't actually keep was his street
clothes and cell phone & charger. Cell phones are given back once they begin
"Candio Phase".

Thanks everyone for the responses. They were all very helpful. I went to the USNavyOCS.com site and found the forum for Class date Oct 3. The recruits have started a Facebook page. To Gdawg, has your son joined either of these? Also, the link you gave me to find class # and graduation date was great. Do you know where it came from and if we can go to that site for more info? Still don't know what to do about cell phone. Is there anyone out there whose LO did not bring a car and had things taken for storage? Where are the items kept and when do they get them back? Thanks!

My son got orders 10days before OCS. He to got bad info from the recruiter. The main OCS website is his best bet to get all the info he needs to know. He will need to memorize alot even before he gets there. Have him start now there is so much to learn. Tell him to gain a few pounds, he will lose weight. Get in good physical shape. Good Luck!

Sue - are they allowed to have all these extra items at the beginning or will they have to be stored in their car until a later date? When I look at the list of what to bring I get the impression that you are only allowed to bring those items on the list. Lint rollers, clear fingernail polish, tweezers etc. all sound great but are they allowed to have them?

Rosemarie - I found this link in another group on this site. https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AhCCFcQEdNVHdGk5OXQ5M2ZGd0...
According to this our guys will be in Class 04-11. The way it was explained is that the last number (11) is the fiscal year in which the class will graduate. So their class will be the 4th class to graduate in the Fiscal Year 2011 (fiscal year starts on October 1). It also gives the graduation date as Jan 7th, which is what my son told me.

I forgot, I sent stamps, too. Good idea to also take a few personal checks. He had ATM but no time to go get cash. Check is easier to pay for class shirts, etc.
Good idea to have different ways to access your funds if needed.

Hi Rosemarie,
My son is at OCS now. I had trouble accessing the website at first. I finally was
able to access. Don't know if it helped but I contacted the webmaster at OCS site and told them of my trouble. I sent an extra towel and washcloth, 6 prs. of good quality blk. bootsocks, I think 8 or 9 t-shirts& underware(wht. crew neck), basic toiletries and small lint rollers, clear nail polish for frayed ends on belts,
bacterial hand wipes(sm. travel size). Also, take phone and charger. Can't have this until 8th week or so but he will need it. Almost forgot, also send a calling card for payphone...can be purchased at walmart. I got one with 500minutes. At first, this is all they can use. These are all I can remember. Now here's the catch!! He carried all impt. documents in his carry-on, everthing
else in check baggage. When he arrived in Newport, his bag was delayed/lost.
So, he checked in at his hotel then had to go shop at walmart to pick up the
basics until his bag was delivered 2 weeks later!! It added to the stress but we just prayed a lot and it all worked out. It will for you too. Tell your son to get an
updated gouge book and memorize everything before he leaves and MAKE SURE HE IS IN EXCELLENT PHYSICAL CONDITION because the road he is about to travel is a tough one mentally and physically. It is a true test of will and your faith in God. (But great is the reward, you just have to want it really bad!!) Good luck, hope this helps!

My son is starting in the same class as gdawg...Oct 3. I have numerous questions for those of you who have been through this :)
1) How do we figure out the class #? 2) Twelve weeks has this class ending Christmas weekend. Gdawg said her son was told the graduation date would be Jan 7. Has anyone had a LO who went to OCS over the Holidays? Is class supspended for a period of time for Thanksgiving and/or Christmas? 3)Ref: the "box" of personal items; my son will fly up there. Where will his things be stored? 4)We both seem to be having trouble with the OCS web site. Most of the time I cannot get it to open up. Any suggestions? 5)My son has no paperwork/orders or anything in print stating that this is even happening. When does he get all of that? 6) His recruiter gave him an outdated Gouge book....still references Pensacola as the training site. Thankfully I printed out the info on the OCS web site the one time I was able to open it. Items to bring are different than what is in theGouge book. Safe to say I should stick to the list on the OCS site...but only one towel and washcloth? Do they do laundry every day or must they buy more towels up there? Weird....Anyway, sorry for the long list of questions. Would appreciate any and all help. Thanks bunches!!

gdawg my LO is in OCS now someone should start facebook page on the class, as everyone communicate and very informative and helpful to give one another encouragement. I followed a couple of classes before my LO started. It really helps and good luck to your son in his OCS adventure?!!!!
