wow there is reason for great rejoicing all around for this wonderful news about  Vincent.......Thank you so much LORD for your answer to all our prayers for him and his family....also the sailors in GC that have been praying.......

Welcome Nervousnellie!  Come on over to the nuke mom's page & take a look around there.  More active & more info.  On that page I have posted to the right (under the member profiles) 9 pages of info.  This will give you a little insight into what you can expect.

Nervousnellie does your son have his phone?  I was able to meet my son at the airport before they shipped out on Saturday so he was able to let me know they arrived and yesterday we talked for a bit to get an update.  Not sure what the phone call procedure would be if they don't have a of their own.

Nervousnellie - Welcome! I can imagine how difficult it is to have not heard from him since he got to GC. My son is not very communicative, but he did at least let me know he arrived safely. Try to take solace in the fact that "No news is good news" is a real thing in the Navy. If you haven't heard from him things are not going badly.

Also, as B'sMom said, come join us on the Nuke Mom's page. You'll get lots of support there and get a sense of what's going on in GC.

I stayed at the Hampton Inn near the 526 / 26 interchange in North Charleston, very nice and affordable 3 star.  Just a quick 20 min run up to power school, pleasant drive.  Anywhere in North Charleston or Ladson is a good choice too.  I went to graduation for my son, a NUKE now on CVN76 in Japan.  He lived in Ladson during Prototype. Spend time downtown, you'll love it!! I envy you:)

We stayed at the Hyatt Place near the Charleston Airport.  It was a wonderful hotel.  Staff was the best I've had, room were extremely clean.  They have a morning breakfast that changes each day (Hot food) and a 24hr room service and a small bar in the lobby.  Their shuttle with take you within 5 miles of the hotel for free (24/7).  There's a lot of places around the area.  I would stay there again if I went back to Charleston.

Ditto to Donna (Eric's Mom).  Hyatt Place at the airport is where I like to stay, too.  Close to restaurants, shopping, NNPTC, and downtown.  Very centrally located.  Good value with free breakfast. 

I stayed at the Navy Lodge in Goose Creek. It is called Foster Creek Villas. The reservation must be made by your sailor. They have a Facebook page. It is base housing that is rented when there is a vacancy. There is also a RV park next to it.

Hello all, I am new here!  We have PIR for my nuke son on Friday.  Can anyone tell me what fast food, etc. is available on base?  One of his favorite gifts has always been an assortment of fast food gift cards, but I don't know what kind to get him:)

Hi, Is it okay for a Grandma to join?  My grandson just left for Nuke school in Charleston yesterday after leaving boot camp.  It's so nice to be able to hear newsy things about the area and the base.

I have a couple of questions-My sailor went snowboarding in NC on Saturday with a large group of sailors from the base.  She is in A school.  She had a blast, BUT fell and broke her left wrist.  She went back to the base with the group late Saturday night, but medical was closed. Then someone took her to the ER where they xrayed her wrist and confirmed the break. Questions: 1.  Will this mess up her Nuke pipeline? 2.  Will she have out of pocket expenses for the ER?  It is her left wrist and she is right handed, so she can still take notes and test.  The only thing is PT might be limited for a couple/few weeks.  Any help or information would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you!!

Just talked to her--she just finished at the orthopedic specialist.  She is in a cast, has to go back in 2 weeks and possibly be in the cast for 4-6 weeks.  She isn't sure how this will play-out with her class schedule.

Harley - wow - sorry to hear about your daughter's snowboarding accident! Hopefully she will be able to keep up with A School, but it's possible she could get rolled back a class.

Hello all! I was just curious as to how much freedom the sailors have to decorate their rooms in GC. I've read that they can choose bedding and similar things, are they allowed to hang posters or anything like that? Thanks so much!

From what I recall when my son was there I don't believe they can put things on the walls (but I don't actually remember!).  They do have room inspections - maybe a small picture frame on his desk would be ok.

Hello all, from Minnesota.  My sailor arrived in GC early early this a.m.  Looking forward to your wealth of experience here, in this group.  Do any of your sailors play hockey?  I know he will be very busy, but later, when he phases up, he may want to do a little drop in hockey.  Not sure how active the hockey community is in SC.  (I also posted this in Nuke Moms group - not sure if I'm in the right place for this question) Thanks!

Welcome, Klu!  I grew up outside of Mpls, but I haven't lived there in a long time.  SC will be a big change from MN, but I am sure he will enjoy it when he has time.

Are there any officer wives on here whose husbands are waiting on a security clearance? 

Anyone have a recommendation for cell phone at Goose Creek. My son will be going to A school PIR Friday.  I know he is going to be anxious to get a cell phone.

Depends on what y'all have planned, but my boyfriend was able to get a cell phone the day of PIR and take it with him to Goose Creek.

Marie, we met our son at the airport after Great Lakes PIR and stayed with him until his departure to Charleston. We were able to bring his cell phone/charger and a few other personal items to him.  I also gave him his laptop.  They are pretty loaded down, and don't have much room so that is about all he could take.  I also had plenty of snacks for him.  I recommend to anyone to go to the airport and wait with their sailor if you can.  It is a special time.
