Welcome to the group!  If you do start the discussion group, please still stay on this main board where we veterans will be providing info.

I plan on driving, I can't afford the airfare with my girls and husband going. Will be a long trip....15 hrs!

Does anybody know how likely it is for extra people to get in other than the 4 on the list?

Brenda:  We don't know yet how many divisions are in this group, but I will say...chances are good that all will get in.  Navy will only guarantee the 4, and the extras may have to wait to enter the hall, but most get in.  Be sure that they have ID and enter with your group.

Divisions in this group will be 269-?  Will go at least through 278 from what you all have posted.  Then a 900 group and possibly an 800 group as well?

Thank you for easing my worries...I have more than the 4 to get in and I knew it would start problems between me and my ex about who needed to be there. I want all to be abe to share in this great moment! My son is following in my dad's footsteps by joining the Navy.

That's great, Brenda, about your son following in his dad's footsteps.  Your son needs to list the 4 that he wants there...and then the others will be extras.  Looks like this group may have 11 or 12 divisions, but I have seen groups with 14 divisions get extras in.

yep, we had 13 DIV and got extras in. Just go as early as you can, the first ones waiting are the first ones in and sometimes they don't make you wait at all if you are there early enough. :-D

The navy website just updated their website with the PIR 8/26. It's a total of 13 Divisions - 269-280 & 941.  Just thought I would share!

I am in San Antonio texas and I now where that is it is pretty there. Are you flying up to Grad ?  where are you going to stay?  when are you going to leave from there?

Water works Mom-I was planning on leaving Thursday and yes, we are flying. I considered driving, but my daughter will be in school (that is the first week of school) and I don't want her to miss any more days than she has to. I don't know yet if my son will be a grad and go, so I'm going to make plans to stay until Sunday, and I guess I can change them if things change. I think if you fly Southwest, they don't charge a fee to change, and I have heard that the fares might be cheaper if you fly into Milwaukee instead of Chicago, so I'm going to check that too. I haven't made my hotel reservations yet, but plan on talking to my best friend who is going with me today to try and get things going. My son will be going to A school in San Antonio from what I understand. I guess theirs is a coed division.

I found Ramada to be a decent place to stay. They also had a free shuttle to PIR. Breakfast is served early that day. And there is a meet and greet there every Thursday 6-8 pm. Most of the motels do not mind changes they are used to this on an almost weekly basis.

If you need to fly Southwest is usually cheaper and they have 2 bags checked free, I think they are more accommodating if you need to change your flight. Try for Milwaukee, traffic in Chicago is awful....we drove and we missed the m&g because of traffic and we were not the only ones who missed it.

RTC tries to get a majority of the SRs out on Sat and it can be early...2am...but you can meet them at the airport and get a pass to go to the gate with them....so much to learn!

Sharon did you book your flight yet? or are you waiting a bit? we were informed to wait till closer to the PIR date...like 3 wks prior...but i'm a bit reluctant to wait that long? advise?

I received the form letter yesterday and the the http://www.bootcamp.navy.mil website is not working. Is anyone else having that problem?

 

Sandi:  If you can leave from Ft Lauderdale, I would look into flying Southwest Airlines to either Milwaukee or Midway (Chicago).  They don't charge a change fee if you have to change your flights for any reason (if sailor is delayed in graduating, etc)...and your first 2 checked bags are free.  I would recommend that you book through Sunday just in case your SR has weekend liberty. 

We liked Residence Inn Waukegan.  Great hotel, PIR shuttle, hot buffet breakfast,etc.  Bout 4.5 miles from base.

We didn't know about Southwest when we went and flew from Miami....had to change our reservations due to SR being asmoed (setback).  Chi-CHING!  So I would look into SW fares.  We also rented a car...I would recommend that over taking taxis, etc if possible.

emextx:  They just changed the website.  I can't get on yet either.  I use Internet Explorer as my browser and it won't allow access.  Downloading Firefox supposedly allows it.  I'm waiting to see if they correct this where IE can access the site.

Sharon:  Those of us with Explorer can't get on it...even with adding the "s" to the website.  Hoping they correct this!

If you use just the www. and not the http you should be able to get on...anyway that is what I read on the facebook page.

Thank you diannep-veteran!!  I installed the Firefox then I added the s to the http and THEN I was able to get on the site!

 

 

lol...you are probably right.

the address for the website changed to https://bootcamp.navy.mil       They added an "s" after the http and they reccomend using mozilla firefox.

Okay...I have IE and the Link that I have had stored in my favorites still works on my computer.

Sharon-I am guessing that is why the old site is still up...for the 07/15 PIR until they fix the IE problem.

The certificate error...I have encountered it several times during my husbands deployment as I have handled some of his business. Same thing...I just "trust" the site.

I saw some where on here the lanyards with pir dates. I talked to our screen printed & I think the min order was 25, I really want to order then & I'm willing to do the name tags...gives me a project to get my mind off missing my daughter, but I dont need 25, anyone know how those have been done in the past?

SailorBrittysMom:  Are you talking about the ribbons that Lala makes for PIR?  With the name and division number on them? I'm not familiar with lanyards. 

But I CAN give you a project!  It is nice at the MeetNGreet to have namestags that have the N4Mom picture icon/screen name of the person with their "real name" below.  I know one group had a member do this for all, and it was a great "gift" to them.  It could be an ongoing project since I feel sure other members will still be joining here. 
The Ramada (where the MeetNGreet is) supplies blank nametags, but it is kind of fun to have the ones I mentioned above since all know each other by that.  Think about it!  Would be a nice project for you!

I have seen only one group do the lanyards. Not sure the cost but I am sure the more you order the cheaper the price. I know when you get them printed they all have to say the same thing so you could put The PIR Date on them and maybe put all the DIV numbers on there. I wonder if they charge per letter. I really have no clue, sorry. And, I am not sure how many DIV's will be in this group but the more Div's there are the more people who will want the lanyards or the personalized ribbons or both. I already have several orders for ribbons from this group and some of them are already finished and ready to ship. They do look great with each individual Sailors name on them. They look so much better in person and I wish I could get better pictures. I have had several people asking the size they are about the size of your hand or 4 to 6 inches from top to bottom depending on how long the name is.

One thing that will also make it easier to recognize everyone at the meet and greet is to change your icon picture to one of yourself. We did this a couple weeks before PIR so that everyone would be able to put faces with names. It is funny how you can picture someone in your head and then when you finally meet them they look nothing like you thought in your head lol.

Ok if I'm correct any ribbons or lanyards our just special made/ ordered by division?

Diannep I'm totally happy to make name tags with photos for meet&greet! What size are they so what I make can just slip into what the ramada gives out...

SailorBrittysMom-the name tags that we rc'd from Ramada were the standard "Hi my name is..."stick on ones like you would get from an office supply. Hope that helps.

I know I read somewhere that when our Sr leaves with us for the day after PIR, they cannot return with anything... my question is if they are a grad and go, do I have to mail her phone to her in pensacola or what?

My son will also be leaving for Pensacola - I have heard that we can meet them at the airport on Saturday morning and give them their phone then.  My question is can we also give them their iPod/iPad if they want?

Bev and kiminaz, I am interested to know this as well.  Are your SRs going in with the title Airman?  And going to Pensacola for A school for that?  That's my daughter's path, so it made me wonder if we'll be in another forum here at N4M in 6-7 weeks together :-)

Ah the "black bag" .....you can give them their phone etc at the airport as long as is is allowed by the "school" they are going to. Your SR will tell you what he/she can have/wants.A black back pack or other plain black carry on (Walmart $10-$15) or they sell them at the NEX($40 for a back pack) on base. Ask your SR when the time gets closer to PIR. what they want or can take. At this point they probably do not know that info.

Ladies there are lots of diff groups for you to join when your SR moves on to "A" school. You'll find some of these moms wherever your SR goes. Look on the groups list and check it out.
