i just reread my last letter... 02/941 starts hell week tomorrow according to my daughter. Fingers are crossed all goes well!
  • TexasLiz

Remember weekends dont count! So she might be 4-1 on monday, if thats what you ment... My hubs hell week starts Tuesday! Our SRs are not alone :) But goodluck to all our SRs going through hell week this coming week!
  • Bev Ship 02/Div 941

lol yeah thas what i meant. I had an emergency appendectomy last week and have been off work and my days are all screwed up
  • tysmom

Glad to hear you are all getting letters. They are precious! If you are flying and have not booked your flight check CheapOAir. They were pretty inexpensive. Having said that Southwest is good also and does not charge for bags. And they allow you to change your flights without a HUGE penalty.

Your SRs are real busy every day of the week. Very little down time. Mine said the days melted into one another.

diannep: Why no more BS schedules?

    Vet mom of Ty.

  • diannep

Hey, tysmom.  RTC wants the ladies to start practicing OPSEC while their SRs are still in bootcamp....so they do not want them posted (they want the ladies to consider that posting "ship movement" which is forbidden in the fleet).  I am trying to "PM" them out now...not quite as convenient but whatever!  The N4MomAdmin has asked that we not post them on the boards here either, so we will comply!  :-)

Hi everyone, sorry I haven't really been on here much the last couple of days. We are home from the Keys, happy to be sleeping in our own bed tonight. I didn't have internet where we stayed last night and my phone charger for the car broke and I couldn't use my phone for internet because the battery was too low. The good thing is my Kindle was charged and I bought a new book this morning and read the entire novel by the time I got home, James Patterson's "Now You See Her" It was really good if you need a book to read :-) I also finished the Hunger Games trilogy yesterday which was awesome. They are filming the movie close to my house :-) I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend, I am already unpacked and will be back to working on ribbons tomorrow for all of you who have ordered them. Thanks so much it is good to be back :-)
  • Lala Ribbon Queen PIR Ribbons

Usually if they are asking for specific items they have permission to get them. If not then they should know better. We all know they have been told so over and over. I am sure it will be fine. My daughter had me send her shampoo and writing paper, stamps, and a phone card. I sent it all and she didn't get in trouble. Then late just before PIR she had me send her hair straightener and hair dryer and some basic make-up for PIR. She was in the performing DIV and she was allowed to get these items but could only use them for PIR performances. They are also allowed to receive their contact lenses and a small bottle of solution. I hope you get another call very soon Sandi.

That is very strange about the clock, hummmmm

  • diannep

You should be able to send it Alie.  If she asked for you to send it, she should have gotten permission already. But they are allowed this anyway.  They just have to put it away until piks/PIR.
  • Cathy_ProudNavyMom

My daughter asked me to send makeup for graduation also.  So sorry if this is a repeat request for information.  I know that I have either written this in an email to someone or posted it here or on Facebook but am so scatter-brained today I can't remember what I did or if I got a response OR what the response was.  Kind of pathetic, I know!  So - I do remember reading about this that they can have it for that purpose but I'm wondering how I send it.  If I send it in a brown padded envelope that is 8 1/2 x 11, that should be fine right?  It is only a few things but I wanted it padded well since one of them is a glass bottle.
  • Bev Ship 02/Div 941

I sent off my daughters makeup today. I figure she asked and she of all people should know if she can get them or not. Just sent powder and liquid foundation blush and eye liner. They need it for the PIR's before theres that they will be performing in
  • Lala Ribbon Queen PIR Ribbons

If they ask for the make-up I would go ahead and send it. We also sent it in a bubble envelope and marked on the outside of the package what it was and what it was for "Make-up for Pics and PIR" and she didn't have any problems. They don't always have time to go to the NEX and there are isles that they are not allowed to even go down while at bootcamp so that is why they want you to send those items.
  • Cathy_ProudNavyMom

Okay great - thanks everyone - I'm sending it tomorrow I think my package is just fine!
  • Jana

Sharon-or whoever else knows the answer, why is it o.k. on the RTC facebook page to mention the SR's last name?  I asked the question yesterday if it was permissible to post the last name because everyone else is doing it and from the responses that I got, seemed like it was a stupid question.   They will say Good nite, SR _________ Ship 09/Div 279...etc. and I mean the whole page is full of posts like that....just curious
  • Lala Ribbon Queen PIR Ribbons

Jana, I agree, I think it is crazy that so many post their whole name on that page. And I never understood saying goodnight or good luck to someone for millions of people to read it except for the one person it was written for. I have seen the administrators of that page several times say that it is not safe to post last names but they do not make them remove the post. It all is more than a little confusing.
  • HvnlySno (S11, DIV 276)

I wanted to give a different perspective on the "good nights" etc...my SR and I to begin with, live 3000 miles from eachother.  It has been our custom to greet eachother with certain sentiments.  I find it comforting to express it even if I can't tell him.  I know he can't read them, but, I ventured to give it a try.  And honestly, I would be better off expressing those sentiments in a journal, a letter to him, or to my "friends" in my circle.  One can feel awfully lonley in this world; I think that's why social networking has taken off.  We are all just wanting to be heard in our way; find some connection when we are cut off from our loved ones.  Some more "publically" than others :)  I'm a wear my heart on my sleeve romantic & he, thankfully, loves me for it.  Most think that I'm too intense!  I'm not saying its good or bad...I thought I'd try it on for size, and it was ok...not the same, and those sentiments get lost out there in cyberspace.   I hope that helps; at least from one lonley hearts perspective!  Thank you for listening, you all have been a blessing to me!
  • diannep

Jana:  DITTO what you and Lala said.  Exasperates the heck out of me!  Here...we can't post BattleStations dates anymore, yet---FB has last names all over the place.  My guess is:  RTC would have preferred to not be on FB.  But it was kind of "if you can't beat them, join them" in my opinion.  It is a way to give the ladies a "forum" with RTC...I wish there was a way the ladies could go on under screen names, however.  But I guess that would entail all setting up a FB page under this screen name...sigh....

But, OPSEC policy is still no last names and N4MomAdmin asks us to abide by that here.  So we continue to!

And regardless of whether they say goodnight to their SR on FB or not, if their SR's last name is the same as theirs, it's posted right there.

  • diannep

Sharon:  I think there could be a little jealousy??? going on because we have so much info on here...and lots of it is CORRECT!  :-)  Just give women networking capability...and we get er done!
  • diannep

We lost a sailor last week.  Thought you may want to read the beautiful tribute by his father:

    http://homepost.kpbs.org/2011/08/missing-uss-boxer-sailor-a-father-...

  • HvnlySno (S11, DIV 276)

I'm sorry I wasn't clear. I did not post my SR's name on Facebook nor do we have the same last name. My only 2 posts were a good night & a good morning to "my SR" & encouragement to his division. I was just addressing the sentiments issue not OPECS regulations. I have been trying to be mindful of those! :) please let me know if I've got an error there & I'll fix it! Thanks!
  • diannep

    You're ok, HvnlySno!
  • Cathy_ProudNavyMom

I don't say good night/good morning to my daughter there but I get that it can be comforting to the folks saying it.  More for them than the SRs, without a doubt.  I haven't seen any negative comments about N4M there but then I've only been keeping up for a couple of weeks.  Sometime last week the woman who manages the page posted a question asking whether the followers were aware that the SRs were not able to see what they posted - no one thought the recruits could see it and the sentiment expressed over and over was that they knew, it didn't matter, and they just wanted some connection.  Not my thing, I just tend to write a LOT of letters.  :-)  And, I like it that I've been able to connect with some family members there as well as here, and the Trivia Tuesday, and I look very carefully through their "random pictures" every time they post them, looking for my girl!
  • Sandy's_sailor son

I am careful about what I post on any Navy FB sites too. There is the TCS FB page. This Facebook page is for families and Sailors at (A)school in Great Lakes. It is a good place to visit when you have questions about (A)school.
  • HvnlySno (S11, DIV 276)

I'm hoping that he gets MY letters this week! LOL! Poor guy had to wait a month! Hoping for big smiles from him...and some wistful sighs...! It's a nice feeling to have a man sigh because of you just as I do for him :) new love, it's it lovely! Lol! Feeling a bit twitterpated this morning I guess!
  • atc.mom(7/272)

recieved three letters yesterday, one was addressed to his brother, what a big smile he had when he got one of his very own!!
  • diannep

Cathy:  You don't see any negative comments about N4M on RTC FB because they delete any references made to this group.  Post one and watch what happens!  :-)
  • diannep

Sandi, you and I live in the same "neck of the woods"  Apparently when my son was there, he wrote on Sundays because my letters always came on Thursdays!

Hoping that today is the beginning of a week of lots of letters for you all!

  • Nancy--> OS.son

Hi everyone! I’m new here but I have been reading for quite some time.

My son is at RTC in GL right now SHIP 03 DIV 278 and I’m just going nuts waiting to hear how everything is going over there. I have received about 4 letters 1 call from him total but not to informative so I had to write him with very specific questions. He did tell me that he has made 3 great friends over there one from North Carolina & two from Florida, I’m very grateful to hear these boys have each other to lean on. I can’t wait for graduation & getting to know you all a little better.

  • Nancy--> OS.son

Oh I won’t be able to make it, my flight doesn’t land until 8:30ish.

Does everyone already know what they will do/visit while there? My plan is to play it by ear & see what my son wants to do but I certainly want to be prepared if he is up to seeing the town…

  • Nancy--> OS.son

Oh wow didn’t know that. Will keep that in mind… I bet my kid would love to see the Captain America movie, we seen every new movie we could before he left to GL I know he was disappointed that he was missing this one. Ill have to check into this, thanks! My first thought is to bring him back to our room, give him his phone & run out to pick up some food. Giving him privacy to call his GF, she unfortunately isn’t able to join us. It also would give him the opportunity to change into something more comfortable & relax.

Love your pix & congrats on your second Sailor!

  • diannep

Oh boy, Sharon....I guess if they elect to take a shower in the hotel room, they should do that "in uniform" too?  Oh my....

Two favorite activities for the sailors on liberty are to see movies and go to Gurnee Mall.  There are movie theaters in Gurnee (close by).  We stopped by Gurnee Mall on Sat (day after PIR) after our sailor had left and it was packed with sailors, both from GL base and RTC.

  • Lala Ribbon Queen PIR Ribbons

Gurnee Mills Mall is pretty awesome. It has pretty much every store you can think of. And not only do they have the theater that Dianne mentioned but they also have a ice skating rink and for those of you taking kids along they also have a big carousel that is beautiful. Just be sure and pay attention to your time while you are there. The mall is Z shaped and it doesn't have pass through stores or halls to get to the other side. If you start at one end and go to the other the only way back is to go back the way you came. Unless of course you call a taxi to pick you up at one end and drive you to the other end lol. Don't think I didn't consider it lol, that place was huge and I had had very little sleep :-)
  • tysmom

Remember they will be in their dress whites so whatever you choose to do it has to be a "clean" activity. The first thing my SR wanted to do was go to the Sprint store to get his phone activated. Then we ate at Outback where they gave 10% off to those in uniform. Then to the mall, our room and it was time to go back.):. Stopped at the Nex too. Met the buses at OHare. Spent some time there at Starbucks. This is when it got tricky...I left my license at home...no going to the gate for me! Flew out at 6am! Whirlwind time but PIR was so worth it. When that big door opened WOW! Awesome!!!

  • Betsy, mom of Stennis sailor

tysmom, had a great point to make.  Please remember when you are out with your sailors, to ask if the restaurants or even some merchants have a military discount.  Our sailors work very hard for us and if they can catch a break for dinner or merchandise, they should take advantage of it, because they deserve that.   We did find some restaurants who gave it to them and when I went to visit my son, while he was in A school in Pensacola, we found that some of the shops in the mall there also gave them a military discount.  It's funny how when mom is with him, he "needs" civvies.  I bought him shoes, shorts and t-shirts.  lol  But, of course, I was thrilled to do it.  :)
  • Nancy--> OS.son

Thanks Dianne I will have to look at the schedules for that theatre.

Good to know Tysmoms, awe so sorry to hear you didn’t get to pass thru the gate…

Sharon I will add that to our things to do list, and have all the materials & maps ready to go.

I think my son will wait to get his civvies, he says he is trying to lose weight. They give them cookies during chow & he loves cookies. My kid isn’t over weight (as you can see by his picture) but he has some soft spots that he doesn’t care for. He put on some weight before he left due to everyone taking him out for his “favorite” meals… so I guess he’s working on those extra pounds.

Has anyone gotten letters this week?

  • SailorBrittysMom

  • diannep

Betsy, I know the feeling of wanting to buy for them when visiting.  When I went to visit mine last Fall at his 1st duty station, he wanted a couple of tshirts at Champs.  I did my best to try and pay for them...no way...I even tried "it will make me feel good" and he said, "No, mom.  You need to hang on to your money.  I am capable of buying these myself.  Always have bought my own clothes since an adult."  Ooops, oh, ok....well, I think in the back of his mind, he is afraid that I will "run out of money" and he will have to support me?????  Yeah, right....he knows how frugal I am! :-)  So glad that YOUR son allowed you that "joy"!  Phleeewie on mine!  :-)
  • atc.mom(7/272)

where is the jelly belly factory located? my son loves those.
  • diannep

    yum....
  • atc.mom(7/272)

i thought it was closer, like chicago, that would be too far for SR's to go while on liberty, i thought i read about someone going there, maybe it was when their SR had already left for a-school
  • diannep

  • diannep

Yes, Blufire:  Yes, Sharon is right...unfortunately you won't witness this part with your SR.  This is the capping cermony after they finish BattleStations.  BUT....I will post another pik that IS what you will witness!  The BIG DOOR moment at PIR!  Those are their trenchcoats over their arms.  Goosebump moment for sure!
  • Doreen(07/272)

We didn't hear from our SRlast week...his gf got a letter today, that he wrote last week...he said he has bronchitis...makes my stomach hurt knowing my boy is sick, and I can't take care of him.
  • Lala Ribbon Queen PIR Ribbons

Where is everyone? This is a large PIR group to have so little comments. I hope everyone is doing well, getting lots of mail from their Sailor and really excited about PIR. It won't be long now.

I sent out more ribbons to wear to PIR today for this PIR group. If you ordered some please let me know when you get them. You should have them by Monday :-) Here is a pic of one that was mailed today for the 8-12 group. I had camera trouble and wasn't able to get a pic of the ones with first names in this group. Sorry about that.
