Has anyone else's sailor had hard time with his classes.  I feel so bad for our son.  He sure seems to be getting stressed.  He has only had one week of classes.  But he is talking like he is going to be discharged from the Navy.

  • bkat3

Marie - Classes are very hard and require many hours outside of the class time for studying and memorization of the material.  It depends on the topic how well each student does.  Hopefully, some topics that he is good at will follow these first few weeks.  Tell him to hang in there and put in as much effort as he is able.  Once they get in the groove, most seem OK.  My LO is more than half way through now.

Rest assured that the Navy wants them to succeed.  Even if they fall behind, they may be put on mandatory study hours.  Not fun, but they are trying to keep them in the program and help them get caught up.  If all else fails for the nuke program, I know of several sailors that were re-classed in other positions.  They are certainly not discharged that quickly.

  • thinNavyblueline

Marie- The first few weeks of classes are difficult because they are taking two courses at once, on top of all of the structure and regulation. It should get easier after they hit Phase 2. My SO is about to hit Phase 3 and though there are times that it stresses him out and he feels like he doesn't understand, they are fewer than they were before. Like bkell32 said, they will up his study hours if he is struggling, and he will be assigned to a different rate if he still struggles, most likely the non nuke version of their rate, ex: ETN becomes ET. Just keep building him up and encouraging him!

    hey All,

My son is having his PIR on Friday, and then on to Charleston on Saturday for MM training. We're very excited!

  • NavyMom2016

My son has been in Goose Creek for about a month. We are trying to get his car to him and I was looking at Transport companies when a fellow Navy mom told me that she heard that the Navy will PAY for one car to be shipped.

Is anyone aware of the Navy's protocol for this and does anyone have any experience in handling this?

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

NavyMom2016 - Welcome!  Nope, the Navy won't pay for car to be transported while they are in school.  That's on you (or him)!  Your friend might be thinking of the Navy covering moves once they are in the fleet.  Your son has a while for that.  We transported our sons car to him in Goose Creek back in 2013 (from CA).  We used Door to Door Transport.  Roy was very helpful.  Not sure if he is still there but here's his # 954.703.1113.

If you haven't already joined the Nuke mom's group, please do.  It's much more active than this page. Here's the link:

NavyMom - I found my old post from 2015.

We shipped our son his car at Thanksgiving (2013) and didn't have any issues.  Cost was $795 from So Cal to Goose Creek.  The gentlemen I was in contact with was Roy....he was very helpful.  They picked it up on 11/22/13 and it arrived on 11/27/13.

    Door to Door Transport Company
       Phone: (855) 638-2038
        Fax: (954) 420-9564

We made arrangements to have it delivered to the Food Lion parking lot that is just outside of the base.  That way they had room to unload it.  The driver had my son's cell phone & he called him when he was a few hours away to give him an ETA.  Then he called once he was about 30 minutes out and my son got one of his buddies to give him a ride over.  Was very quick....Be advised you pay a deposit to the transport company but you have to pay either cash or cashier's check to the driver upon delivery.  That seems to be standard with all shipping companies (at least the ones I called).

NavyMom - I found my old post from 2015. It has another # for Door to Door - the # I posted earlier was direct to Roy.

  • FLNavymom

I haven't posted in a long while.  I decided to send an update on my Nuke son.  He is almost done with Prototype.  He has a few more quals to get through.  He will be going to Japan.  Nuke school has been long and stressful training for my son, but he prevailed!  His dad and I are so very proud of him.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

BZ to your son FLNavymom!  Everyone I know of that has gotten orders to Japan has really enjoyed it.  Hopefully you'll get to visit him at some point!

  • Mindya

That's awesome FlnavyMom. Mine is going through the same thing right now! Just a couple more to go. Awesome job to him. Now hopefully our boys can come home for Thanksgiving.

  • FLNavymom

Thank you all.  I too have heard great things about Japan.  He is very excited about going.  We will be going to see him as soon as we can.  Our youngest is going to Great Lakes in Feb.  He will be a Spook. As empty nesters we will be able to go see them often.  I hope.  Best of luck to your sailor Mindya.  It's been a long journey for them.  I know they are excited to join the fleet.

  • Mindya

Whats a spook please? They all have names and most of them I can't understand LOL!!! Mine is a Squid LOL!!!

  • Kymom

Where can you find more information about Japan?
Plus, any ideas on traveling there.?
  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Kymom - there is a pretty active Japan group on here and they can answer many of your questions.

Hi all - as long as you have posted since 12/1/15 you will not be deleted from N4M.  The site has topped out at 100,000 members so in order to allow new ones in they have to start purging inactive members.  There are currently about 3500 people waiting to be added!  Hopefully we'll be able to start adding new members soon.

Are recruits allow to bring cell phones from bootcamp to A school?
  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Yes you can give them their phones to take to A school.
  • Maria - Michigan Mom

Good morning,  my family is planning a week long vacation after Power School graduation March 31st.  My younger son has the following week off of school for spring break so the timing is perfect.  I have heard that the Wild Dunes resort area is a great place to stay at Isle of Palms.  Hoping to rent a house or condo near the beach.  Does anyone have any suggestions or have any of you vacationed near there?  Thanks in advance for any tips!  :)

  • SUNSHINE5

    Michigan Mom,
Hello. We've rented twice on Isle of Palms. And absolutely loved the time we spent there. You can't go wrong in either location. I'd suggest taking a look on VRBO. That's where we found both houses. You'll definitely want to make reservations at the Obstanant Daughter!! Have fun ... beaches are stunning! I think our guy might be graduating around the same time.
  • Maria - Michigan Mom

    Sunshine5,

Thank you for the tips and we will check out Obstanant Daugher!  Let me know when you find out your son's graduaiton date.

  • SUNSHINE5

Will do!  Across the street from the Obstenent Daughter is Poe's Tavern (named after Edgar Allen Poe). Great, casual, beach burger place. Both are on Sullivan's Island, no more than a 5/10 minute drive from Isle of Palm.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

I want to make sure that everyone in this group is also a member of our nuke moms group.  It's a little more active over there.....

  • atwinmom

Hello, I'm new to this group, but not new to Navyfor moms,  my son is at Goose Creek and will be graduating soon, where can I get the time and place, my son said he doesn't know the details.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

atwinmom - which school is he graduating from?  You might want to post your question in the nuke moms group.  Maybe someone will have a sailor in the same class as your son & has the answer.  He should have that info though as the grad dates are usually known as soon as the school starts.  Has he asked his SLPO or a fellow classmate?

  • atwinmom

He is graduating from A school Feb 3rd, it's getting pretty close!!  I'll ask in the nuke moms group too.   Thanks!!

  • PacNWmom

Hi atwinmom, and welcome to the group. Congrats on your son's arrival in Charleston. We're here to help each other, ourselves, and (of course) our Nukes.

From which phase of training is your son graduating? "A" School and Power School both their graduations on base, while Prototype graduation is held on the Yorktown at Patriots Point. Each of these graduations marks a big hurdle, so my advice would be to go to as many as you can.

A Feb graduation means they'll be in their dress blues. To me, they seem much more formal than the whites. Everyone looks so sharp and on form.

I hope this helps. If you haven't already, I *strongly* suggest to also join the Nuke Moms group. It's much more active than this group.

  • atwinmom

Thank you PacNWmom and B'sNukeMoM, I appreciate your help!

  • tina41

    hello all!

I hope you, your sailors and your families are all doing great!

  • CSW

Well our sailor officially gets to the books starting today. Done with all that work/life balance and into the real school.  He knows his target graduation dates so working on schedules now. How close to graduation do they know they have passed A school?

  • mattymom

@CSW mine too:) ours must be in the same group!
  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Hello ladies - you'll find the Nuke Moms page is more active and will probably get answers faster over there.

As far as passing - they comp (take their final test) the week of graduation - if I remember right for A school it's on Monday and graduation is always Friday.  Your sailor would be able to let you know the day of the test.
