Well this is all coming too quickly!  My daughter just has given me a whirlwind. She signed Monday and was to go to boot camp on Sept. 6th. They called today and are moving her up to July 25th. I am scared and don't feel I have had enough time to process this. I need a list for boot camp and am overwhelmed at the moment.

  • Proudsailormom

My son is currently in Boot Camp and gosh it's been a whirlwind. The groups on here have been an amazing help. We are all in this together! I downloaded a book called Be safe, Love Mom and it has been very helpful. I haven't finished it yet but I do recommend it!
  • Belle1213

Navy2017 I know how you feel, son signed contract in August 16, also leaves July 25. Thought we had plenty of time but quickly realizing time is going by way too quickly.  I too feel completely overwhelmed.

  • ScoutToNavyMom

I ordered the book. Waiting for it to arrive.
  • Navymomx2

There is never enough time, whether it's 2 days, 2 years, or anything in between. My son was supposed to leave 15 months ago and his job was frozen a week before he left. Fast forward to 2 day ago, he left for Boot and I still can't process it. Haven't slept a wink since he's been gone. So proud yet terrified beyond belief.

  • Holly

It is very overwhelming and happens so fast you can't process it all. My son was supposed to leave in June. Got a call Good Friday that he was leaving for boot camp on Wednesday. I think the more time I had anticipating his leaving was making it worse. This was like "ripping off the band-aid." Start making a list of things you need to do and focus on that. It will help keep your mind off the impending leave date. You'll get through this!
  • CrissySue

Navy 2017, that happened to my husband too. He signed and swore in Nov. 2016. He was shipping June 13th. He just graduated Boot yesterday (was supposed to be 3/24).

Its a good thing, get it over with so she can get her career going. Just take it one day at a time and be prepared as they may move her date even closer. Spend every minute you can with her and soak it in. Boot camps a strange beast. Its days are long, but weeks are short. It seems to go on forever, and yet its over in a blink.

I just got another letter from my husband. Out of three, one has RTC on it, one has USS (ship name) and then the other JUST has his ship and division number... I don't know if he's gotten any yet. Do y'all know how I should address it???

  • Tigerfan

Address it with the Ship # and Division #
  • TieranyC

If it has the USS ship name on it, will that be okay too? Cause that's how I've been doing it.

  • Toni

    Name

    Ship #  Div #

    3510 Illinois Street

    Great Lakes, IL 60088-3119

  • TieranyC

he had a specific ship name inbetween his Ship & Div #, so that's what I have been putting on there.

  • Toni

If that is what he wrote on the form letter that came after "the Box" then it must be right.  I know my son has gotten a few letters already because he told me when we spoke last Saturday.  I am sure he is getting them, just keep writing.  Blessings.

  • TieranyC

I never received the form letter either.

  • Toni

    Did you receive "the box"?

  • TieranyC

I did get the box, not the form letter.

  • Toni

It usually comes a couple of days to a week from the arrival of the box.  Maybe the next time you speak or write to him mention that you never got it.  Good luck.

  • Qenime

Here is the link for the correct street addresses for each ship.  They are not all the same (3510 Illinois St).  If you know the ship, you can find the street address:

    http://www.bootcamp.navy.mil/contact_recruit.html

  • lemonelephant

TieranyC, you do not have to put the Ship name, USS Kearsarge, in the address, but you can. Some recruits like seeing the ship name. You also do not have to include RTC. See Letter Writing & Fun Stuff/Questionnaires to send to your Recruit.

    Hello everyone,

This is all very new to me and I am feeling the same way as most of you...so proud and nervous at the same time.

My son left on May 1st. I got the very quick call late Monday night but was somewhat relieved just to hear his voice which sounded upbeat. I wonder how he is doing and am anxiously awaiting letters from him. I sent a batch of postcards from friends. (I got the address from his recruiter)

My heart skipped a beat when I saw the PIR groups go up! I don't have the form letter yet but am I right to assume that if his DIV is 197 then his PIR is June 23?? That means one less week of waiting? (of course as long as he stays with the group)

Sorry for the length but I have been reading a lot on here for months although it didn't feel real until he actually left. Thank you all so much for your valuable info and honest feelings. It has helped so much.

  • NavyMom2424

Hi. My son also went in on May 1st! I am overwhelmed with the info and links on this site. I feel like I'm not on top of anything! I printed out some information & will start reviewing for now. I haven't received the Form letter either but seems like it may be another week.
  • ProudRN

In the recruits receive cologne or deodorant? My daughter says my son asked her to send him miniature sized items. He graduates May 26.
  • 4Maineboys

    Hi again,

My son left Monday...I got his box this afternoon...rolled up pants and all. Just waiting on form letter now.

    Good luck to all!

  • lemonelephant

MySonBug, yes, on the deodorant. Maybe on the cologne, but since he is in a 900 division, yes, he probably is allowed that for the PIR days when he performs. He can get both at the NEX. He would have to open any package in front of the RDC.

  • lemonelephant

4Maineboys, yes, DIV 197 has PIR on 06/23/2017.Your comment leads me to believe that you received his address from the recruiter. Wait on The Form Letter before sending letters.

    Good morning everyone,

PLEASE!!!! make sure your loved one takes a calling card to boot camp and or send them one ASA you have their address!!!!!!!

My daughter could not call home for 4 weeks because of lack of a calling card. They can buy one there but it takes time :(

  • Jmom

I was reading about the PI, and dress for it and was wondering, would it be appropriate for my younger son to wear his Civil Air Patrol dress uniform? Does anyone know?

  • Momof2

I have a question what are challenge coins, where do I order them and is it to late PIR 5/19. Thanks
  • WonderTwins'mom

Momof2: out of curiosity i googled it and they have them at Amazon with less than a week delivery f.y.i.
But idk what they are used for or what purpose they serve. May i ask how you heard about them?
  • Momof2

JohnsmomKatrina, if he wants to do that and feels that doing so would honor his brother, then the dress uniform is the uniform of the day.

  • Mammagoose

What is the significance of rolling up the pants legs? I keep seeing mentions of it but I don't know why or what it means.
  • Mammagoose

What is the best calling card to send with my recruit?
  • Toni

The day they arrive their feet are measured to get a correct sizing for their boots.  They have no time to put them down.  My sons jeans had them rolled up.  it's amazing how accurate this site is.

  • ScoutToNavyMom

I got Penny Talk. He had no problems. I could only find it at CVS.
  • CeCe

I also got mine at Cvs. I don't remember the name but I had to read the fine print to find one that is pay phone user friendly
  • misisu

I was able to find a phone card at 7-11. Pay close attention to the ability for use on mobile only or if they work all overy
  • lemonelephant

Mammagoose, see the info in Arrival and What Happens at the RTC.

  • Mammagoose

My son found out today that one of the prototype reactors is going to be taken off line for retrofitting. And that it means nukes entering boot camp are having their ship dates pushed forward. He could be given as little as two weeks notice with little chance to stick to his original date. As soon as he is done with classes and final grades are in, transcripts and updated medical stuff needs to be turned in. He could ship as early as early June but we don't know that yet. The only thing holding me together is all the stuff that needs to be done for him to leave from a place of strength. This mamas a hot mess.
  • Broncos Mom

I purchased Pennytalk at Walgreens.  My son used the calling card when he called last Saturday.  He said they are easy to use.

  • misisu

Mammagoose - best of luck to your son. That is a lot to process.

    OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

  • Anti M

    Thank you, Toni.

And YES, OPSEC includes the training pipeline.
