Just wondering. My son joined as undesignated and I know he will go to school at Great Lakes. My question is how do they get orders? Is it while still in boot camp or after? Is it based off of dream sheets or do those who score higher on tests pick first etc.
Any way, I was just curious if anyone has some idea
  • hope4answers

My son didn't let us know of his until in core school. Alot depends on what the Navy thinks it needs at the time.

  • kimberlya

My son is in the PACT program also.  He is E PACT.  I'm glad you asked those questions, because I would love to know the answers!

  • kimberlya

    What is core school?

  • hope4answers

"2 weeks of the surface common core training. " My S-PACT son thought it was essentially going back over the basics

  • Anti M

Sometimes the PACT sailors receive their orders in boot camp, sometimes in school.  All depends on what billets are open and needs filling, and what part of the quarterly cycle the budget is in.  No way to tell, as current trends can shift so fast.

The order picks are generally only done in the longer A schools, from a pool of orders prepared for the class from the dream sheets, when possible.  While PACT sailors do fill out dream sheets, but it seems like pretty much luck of the draw when it comes to actual assignments.

E-PACT is similar, but with more emphasis on ship's power plant/interior rather than deck operations.

Colagrl - How wonderful for you!  Thank you for your service and enjoy Key West!

  • misisu

Thanks for the info Anti M. I was in 25+ yrs ago and was rated OS. My husband was rated Nuke but was kicked out of school and sent to the fleet. I was lucky - did well in classes and was able to choose destination (Wanted Europe, got Hawaii) I have talked to my son before he left that he most likely would not get a choice and simply be sent wherever the Navy needs a body.

LOL, Colagrl and Misisu ... I was an ET, over 30 years ago.  I asked for Japan and got it, but another time I was up for orders I was given three choices: Diego Garcia, Diego Garcia, and Diego Garcia.  Turns out I loved it there, and met my husband.  I was his relief ... oops, yeah?

Funny how some things about the Navy never truly change, and dream sheets are definitely one of those things.

  • Proud Navy Mom 2017

Hello!  I'm new and getting very anxious for the months ahead.  My son leaves for BC on July 20th.  I've started becoming very emotional when I think of him leaving, but still proud and excited.  Thank you so much for allowing me into this group and I'm sure I'll have a ton of questions soon!

  • Toni

Proud Navy Mom - Welcome, you will have many questions and in this site they will all be answered.  My son graduates 6/2.  Without the experience of the moms here it would have been very hard to get through this journey. Specially, I thank Lemonelephant for all her help.  Many blessings to you and your son.  Toni.

  • CNY Navy Mom

Yesterday I received my son's box with belongings. Will be keeping that box to hold all the memories of the Navy. He arrived at BT on May 4, went in early as his originally date was for August 15. I was an emotional mess for the week before he left up to now. ( still have my moments) But since finding this site it has helped a lot.
I am super proud and excitied to see what the future holds for my boy. Can't wait to see him on graduation day.
  • Proud Navy Mom 2017

Ok, here's a question- I work for a corporate resort and I want to see if there are any of my company's properties near RTC.  What city or town is RTC in?

  • Sassenach

We received our letter today, too!! Ship 04 Div 187. He sounds GREAT.
  • AZ2OH2IL2UT

Anti M- My sister was stationed in Diego Garcia in the 80's. She was an Air Traffic Controller. She LOVED it there too.

  • Dee

@ proud navy mom, it's in Great Lakes. I used my corporate discount at Marriott Suitez
  • TieranyC

I have the brochure and want to stay at a hotel on base. What kind of military ID or verification do they need in order to let us stay there? Specifically Navy Gateway Inns and Suites
  • lemonelephant

You just need your dependent ID. Your recruit, later Sailor, is your sponsor.

What's my dependent ID and how do I get it??
  • lemonelephant

You should receive a mailingfrom your recruit about getting it and enrolling in DEERS. See When Will the Recruits be Paid? and Information for Spouses for more on that and more.

  • TieranyC

I got that. I have an appt next week to go get that done! That's all I need to stay on base?

  • lemonelephant

Yes, that should work. Double check when you make your reservation.

  • TieranyC

I called them yesterday and they couldn't tell me exactly what I would need. Which was irritating.

  • PT mom

@ CNY Navy Mom, Hello from another CNY Navy Mom!!! My Sailor had PIR on 4/28 and is in Pensacola for A school. :-)
  • Melissa

Which hotel are you talking about?
  • Cali

Hi TieranyC, I don't know if you already looked on the Navy Gateway Inn website, but I found a eligibility pdf page.

    Hotel website: http://ngis.dodlodging.net/propertys/Great-Lakes-NS

    http://www.dodlodging.net/NGIS-Patron-Eligibilty-Feb_2014.pdf

Hope this helps, and hopefully it's vacant. I know that they give priority to active duty on TDY or PCS.

  • CNY Navy Mom

@PT Mom my son left May 4 for BT. Glad I found this page as I was so clueless about what goes on and this has really helped.
  • PT mom

@ CNY Navy Mom, I agree! These pages (and Fb pages) have been great sources of information and support.
  • Navymamabear

My cousin is a 1st grade teacher and she got their entire first grade classes to write to my daughters division. I have a letter for each SR. Does someone know the appropriate way to address this so my daughter doesn't get in trouble?
  • ellen0502

Navymamabear, the best thing to do is to first let your recruit know the letters are on the way. You can put all the letters in a manila envelope and address it to your recruit. Since you have told your recruit they are on the way there will be no surprises for her when she is asked to open it in front of the RDCs.

The large envelope is no problem when it is holding letters from school kids. :)

SO HAPPY!!! I got a call from my SR today!! Best Mother's Day gift I could receive! He was in good spirits and said his mouth is all healed now from having his wisdom teeth pulled. He has gained 10 pounds too! HE NEEDED IT! Food must be pretty good, or mine was not! LOL! So thankful to hear his voice. I missed his first call that was made to my cell phone. He left a message on it though!!! Then THANKFULLY, he called my husband's cell phone right afterwards. OMG! I was so happy! I cried when I answered the phone because I was so relieved he called back!!! Not sure why my cell phone didn't ring either! I asked as many questions as I could. Then I heard the RDC in the background yelling something and that''s when he said he had to go. Last words..."I LOVE YOU!"

  • Toni

My call just came in! Yaayyyyy! He sounds terrific.  Best Mother's Day gift.

  • Navymamabear

ellen0502, thank you. I did mail her a letter yesterday letting her know these would be on their way for the entire division.  Do you know about how many are in each division, in case we need to add more.  She's in 932 if that means anything as far as size.

  • Wisconsinmom

My son flies out Monday morning to San Antonio and then out again tuesday for great lakes. I can't believe the final day is here.

Blkph0enix, you are in the right place. Arrival and What Happens at the RTC will let you know what is happening and what to expect.

  • lemonelephant

    sspaws, yes.

  • lemonelephant

Navymamabear, most divisions start with an average of 88 recruits.

  • misisu

Wow, half way through! Phone calls and letters!! My son sounds like he is having a difficult time. Mostly because he is missing home I think. He said they are doing well, but went from top to bottom this past week. Not sure about that. I hope that he gets through without getting too sad. Hope he is able to get some enjoyment out of the things he is learning and the next few weeks go fast.

  • Whiteflowers

Hi all... Got a text from my nephew at 5am that he was waiting to go to MEPS..And to remind me to pay his cell phone.. lol. Trying not to get emotional...And waiting to get my call.
  • Mar3n1

Tomorrow is 1 week since my son left for boot camp feels really strange not hearing from him. I am so used to talking to him everyday about his day. I can't help but worry if he likes it is he okay is he making friends. Today one of the older retired military gentle men told me. "You have to let them go so they can find their way back home momma bear."  Brought tears to my eyes but it made sense.

  • Toni

Mar3n1 - The first three weeks are very hard.  They are adjusting to a total different way of life.  My son is in his 6th week and we spoke last Saturday.  He sounds very different from the call that came on week 3.  More like himself and very sure of his decision to join when just a few weeks back he was questioning it.  He is excited for what the future will bring.  He will be going to Texas for his A school and then on to North Carolina for infantry.

  • Toni

Mar3n1 - He will be fine.  Many blessings for him, you and your family.

  • Mar3n1

Thanks Toni.  He is staying GL for MM after Boot Camp. I guess I just need to find a routine. It's nice to see and hear I'm not crazy for the worry and tears, though.

  • Toni

GaNavyMom - Yes he is HM.  How he told me was five months in Texas and then about two months in North Carolina for infantry.  I think in my sons case he does his C school right after A school.  Is your son graduating on 6/2?

  • Whiteflowers

He's there! My nephew called me from the IL airport and said that will probably be the last time he'll call me since he phone is dying. I'm hoping he'll be able to make another call later. I'm just happy for getting this call!
