I got my letter last Thursday and immediately booked our rooms. My Sailor graduates on June 30th. Maybe we can link up CNY Navy Mom. He also thought ahead. He knew he wouldn't be able to communicate with me on yesterday so he left a Mother's Day card with my mom to give to me. It was the best gift he has ever given me. I can't wait to see him!

Just want to wish all of you and your SRs all my best. We just returned home from the PIR last Friday and want to tell you it was an amazing trip. Spent time with our Sailor and she looked wonderful; used Sarge's taxi service from the airport to GL and went to the Meet and Greet -- A Must for all of you the night before graduation. Such a kind and genuine friendly event and the food/drinks were terrific. Keep in touch!!!

@ GANavyMom ... the dental school is indeed a C school. I can't answer the FMTB training question, as that seems a little odd. Dental techs work in clinics, so also being a combat medic with the Marines doesn't add up. Usually is would be one or the other. The FTMB training takes place at tow different bases, the other in Pendleton in CA, they do not get a choice, although they can list a preference.

GaNavyMom - My son will do A school followed by C school. Followed by infantry in N Carolina. He will be part of the "Green Side" and support the Marine Corps. My son is not in the dental program he is medical.

I hope you all enjoy this journey, My SR will be graduating 5/26/17 it has been a long 8 weeks but all worth it. I am very excited to see him and celebrate this graduation, I look forward to my SR"s future... Send lots of letters !!!!! Don't forget no news is good news!!!!!

@GANavyMom ... he certainly can request it during A school, but if they need dental techs, then that is his fate. Clinic work doesn't feel heroic or glamorous to them, and Greenside with the Marines does. But a truly good dental tech can make a difference to individual sailors in a huge way, so I hope he enjoys the work and gets a really good duty station. He'll probably be at a larger facility, and potentially overseas. Maybe Italy or Japan.

Here is a weird question: Tipping the taxi driver who will be driving us round trip from airport and hotel and back again, along with random trips back from graduation and maybe the mall...do they take debit cards or cash for payment and do you tip them every ride or wait until the end and how much would be the right amount??
May 18, 2017
Toni
I will like to know do we tip the Sarge's taxi and if so how much?

Morbjorn
Another note about the calling cards - my son who is now done with boot camp (PIR was 5/12) did get one, but it went SUPER quick. What they get doesn't last long, so I'd suggest sending one as soon as you get his mailing address. He only got 3 phone calls home, so make sure your ringer is turned on! (I missed a call because of cruddy cell reception at work)
And on the topic of transportation, we drove since our trip to RTC is only about 6 hours included rest/gas stops - don't count on finding parking in Chicago if you go there. I wish we would have taken the train, even if just for the opportunity to have undivided attention while we were talking.

Standard tip is 15 to 20% for taxis in the U.S.
We arranged ahead of time to use Sarge's Taxi Service to get from O'Hare to our hotel in Great Lakes. Tony was our driver and did a stellar job, including a late night detour to a pharmacy on the way. The price was very resonable so an above average tip was earned on top of the rate.
Later, some transportation we had in Great Lakes fell through, and we called Tony back. Once he arranged for us to share the cab and fare with another Navy family, and another time he arranged for another driver to pick us up when our sailor ended up flying out from Midway and not O'Hare. That other driver ended up being Sarge himself at 0130.
We used both cash and swiped a credit card, adding the tip ourselves on the card reader.

kimberlya - it's when they are held back - injury, or they need to work on something, like PT, testing, inspections, or as punishment. I'm pretty sure I have her PIR date right. She said 2 weeks and gave me the date. Kinda hard to make a mistake on that.... So I'm thinking I have the division wrong...I'm afraid she won't get our letters, which would be awful after having a set back!

BabyintheNavy, if she wants that, then yes, he should. He must wear his dress uniform since that is the uniform of the day. See http://www.bootcamp.navy.mil/ad_military_retirees.html.

SailorMoon, there is no graduation on 06/12/2017 since that is a Monday. Division 194 does have PIR on 06/23/2017. See http://www.bootcamp.navy.mil/upcoming_grads.html. Her new division number may be in the computer so that the recruiter would be able to access the info for you.

Sailormoon, mail of ASMO'd recruits is sometimes forwarded and sometimes returned to the sender. Both have happened. it all depends if someone takes the time to look up the new info or not.

SailorMom,
My husband was ASMOd for injury and in RCU - he did get my mail but it took a few more weeks. If your SR was ASMOd 2 weeks her graduation will be pushed 2 weeks as well.

And
lemonelephant - thank you for the info. I actually typo'd the date, she had told me 6/16 which is 2 weeks but the division I wrote down didn't match that date. I'll check with the recruiter tomorrow. Hate that our letters may be delayed when she could use the encouragement but have to remember this is just a bump in the road!

I received a document request call from my SR yesterday. Was given the Processing Days mailing address to send item overnight...just wondering. I was told to address it directly to my SR. I'm so worried that the item will be delayed and it will slow down everything on that end. If an item is requested to be mailed are they then "waiting on it"? I guess what I mean is, will it be noted somewhere that it is expected be sent to someone in charge in the DIV or just put in limbo because my recruit is still in processing days?

Be aware of the address the recruiter has given you, sometimes they are wrong! The best thing to do is wait for the form letter, or if you need to confirm the address please use this link.

Hi ellen0502, actually I got the call directly from my SR and I could hear him being directed by, I'm assuming an Chief or PO. So, but it still makes me nervous because I know its going to the barracks for P-Days. :( I had to send it overnight priority and I see that it has arrived at the post office in GL so that is giving me a little peace, I just want to make sure that the person in charge gets it, since they are the ones requesting it (even though they had me send it directly to my SR)

To all of the new moms on this site. When I first joined I looked at the upcoming PIR's and my sons being the last in the long list seemed so far away. I just watched today's graduation online. That is an emotional graduation. I do have a question though. My parents will be going. One walks with a walking boot and one has a bad hip. What is the walk and sitting like for someone that has health issues like that?

Wisconsinmom, you may want to have them use the wheelchairs to get into and out of the Drill Hall. (A recruit or Sailor from the 900 division will do the escorting.) They can then decide if they want to sit in the handicapped section or in the bleachers with you. See more on that and more in PIR Day and Liberty during PIR Weekend.
