Frazcom21,when my sailor decided on a language at Bootcamp, they told her she would go to Augusta after DLI based on the language she is learning. I think others go to Hawaii and I believe I heard Alaska.
It definitely depends on your language. After DLI You report to your duty station for what I think is called C school or something like that. The duty stations are San Antonio Tx for Spanish linguist, Agusta Georgia, Hawaii, and I forget the other ones. The people that new in boot camp probably found out based on the language they chose. Good luck in your naval career :-)
They CTIs are stationed based on their language. They can go to Georgia, Hawaii, Texas, and Maryland. It's pretty easy to find on the internet which languages go where, so I won't bother writing them out here. While you sort of get to "choose" your language, your DLAB score determines which language you qualify for. And even if you do "choose" a language you qualify for, it doesn't mean you'll get it. As a Navy wife you know by now everything is based on the needs of the Navy. My CTI's group were all thrown into one language when they arrived in Monterey, even though they all weren't given that language at RTC. The Navy needed them there, so that's where the ended up.
Based on my sailor's DLAB and the needs of the Navy, he was presented a list of 3 languages from which to chose while he was at RTC. After inquiring about future demand, advancement potential, and duty station, he chose one; nothing changed for him when he got to DLI..
Is this the same protocal for sailors who have served already several years? He took the DLAB as a depr and they still put him in a sub; then a distroyer. He missed 2 the first time he took it; missed 3 when he took it 7 years later. Yes, the Navy puts you where the need is at the minute. Will he have any choice of language when he gets to Monterey?
What language he qualifies for is based on his final DLAB score. So he may "choose" a language within that tier he qualified for on the test. The languages are "tiered" based on their difficulty. I don't know what missing 2 or missing 3 equates to with the score. Do you know what his final score is? If you do, I might be able to tell you what tier he likely qualified for. For example, my sailor made a 145. That qualified him for all the tiers. So, in theory, he could have "chosen" the lowest tier language. It doesn't mean the Navy would have put him there.
he got 151 frist time he took it and found a mistake on the test. second time he got 150. They changed the test between 2005-2012 and the optimun score was a point or two different than in 2005. I've read the DFL website--yes, he qualifies for the top tier, and that's what he hopes to get when he arrives in August, but the military may have a different plan--who knows??
From the Chicago Tribune (released at 2:30pm today, 7/21):
...John Larimer, 27, was another victim. A petty officer in the Navy who specialized in cryptology, Larimer was stationed at Buckley Air Force Base in Aurora. "He was an outstanding shipmate," his commanding officer, Commander Jeffrey Jakuboski, said in a statement released by the Navy. "He will be missed by all who knew him."
The Buckley base also lost Air Force Staff Sergeant Jesse Childress, 29, a reservist who had been called to active duty as a cyber systems operator, the military said.
Sending thoughts and prayers, of course, to those families.
My SR is at bootcamp and met with a Chief. According to his letter today he selected a language and an assignment. From what I'm reading on this site, that may all change once he gets to DLI correct? Why give him the choice then? Just to keep him motivated?
My daughter got to pick her language, she was going to do a certain dialect but never got that, it depends if they have enough to start a class or just use people to fill up another class.
I don't think they are trying to mess with our guys and gals. It's just sometimes things change. It's a big, fluid Navy. They are trying to react to changes all the time. Sometimes that means our kids' duty station, rate, etc may have to change to fit the needs of the Navy. That doesn't mean it's going to happen, just that it can. When my son got to DLI they have a class that they needed to fill up. So just about everyone that got there at the same time he did was put in that class. Now, it just happened to be it was the language he was going to do anyway. But for some, it wasn't. It did, however, have him starting classes a month and a half sooner than he was originally supposed to start. That was actually a good thing. That meant less time cleaning, etc., while he was waiting for classes to start.
pamperedmom- There were 8 sailors that went from BC to DLI with my daughter. They all started school on 7/12 and I believe that are all doing the language they selected at BC.Does not mean it always sticks but probably more often than not.
My daughter picked her language at BC and still has the same language once she started classes. They did move her class schedule up a month which made her quite happy. I agree with Lisa (A-Mac's mom, I think it happens to be what is needed that requires the change, not just messing' with the kids.
From speaking with my son this seems to be the scenario. If you are in one of the top tier languages (scoring over 109 DLAB) you will most likely not be changed expect to perhaps another language in that tier, but that is highly unlikely. This would only happen if they had a high failure rate and needed to fill more slots because these are highly vital languages right now. So, according to him that makes movement in the top tier more secure. In the less vital languages if they need to shift to fill a class they will.
I also read recently that a Sailor who was behind in class due to an injury was being put into another language and was trying to appeal it, because he had nearly perfect scores in his language of choice. I have not heard how that played out. If that mom is out there maybe you could let us know the outcome.
My son just arrived in Monterey this weekend, fresh out of BC. Does anyone know how to best address a package to him? Also, now that he is no longer a SR, what do call them?
Finally, how long does it typically take for them to advance to phase 1 and phase 2?
Its my undersyanding that Phasing up depends on how quickly the new group gets their tasks done. They have so long to get these done as a group. My daughter arrived on 7/1/12 to Monterey and they have all three phases done this past weekend and she now has full liberty. Your son will give you his new address when he can receive packages and also tell you how to address him
Hi Conor's mom. My son got there 7/13 and he passed Phase 2 this past week. He was allowed out to twelve on the weekend. There letters are addressed as SN Last Name, First Name, Initial and then basically the same as BC. Except they will have a building and room number. This address is temorary -my son said he would be there for about a month before he gets his permanent room. Hope that helps.
Hi little bubble. Wow you have great questions and I will try to answer as best I can since my sailor son is still at DLI and has a good 6 months left.
1. Phase: you may be safe. It took my son about a month to make it through his phase. You'll definitely get that info from your sailor before you head to San Jose.
2. Thanksgiving: my son was in class til Weds noon. The unit was kind enough to give him a 4-day pass and he came home. I heard they are more lenient with sailors in the long classes. My sailor is in a 18-month course.
Hopefully I my answers to 1& 2 help you out.
Hi. My son graduated 7/13 and is in CTI. He is already done with Phase ll. Usually takes 6-8 weeks to get to Phase lll if he passes everything. It is like an extension of BC. Yes they have Thanksgiving and Christmas off. A School breaks for holiday. They will have to use leave if they are leaving the base though. Christmas I know is two weeks not sure about Thanksgiving. Yes they can have cell phones and computers. My son calls almost everyday. After A school depending on his language he will probably due cryptology for 6 months before getting stationed somewhere. That is all I know at this point.
Hi again
Now to address questions 3 & 4.
3. Cell phones: yes, they are allowed cell phones. There are probably rules about phones in the classroom, but other than that, pretty much everyone has one since I don't think there are phone lines in the rooms.
4. Assignment: it depends. Mostly on the language. Most will go stateside except for the folks that go to Hawaii. He will also learn that when he gets to DLI.
Good luck to your sailor :-)
Hi again. As for Thanksgiving, I don't see a reason for him him to have to stay unless he's punished somehow. They get that Thursday thru Sunday off. My son flies al the way back home in San Antonio. For Christmas he took the entire 2 weeks of leave cause he wanted us to drive his car back to Monterey so that he could have some wheels to get around. By the time he graduates in Feb 2013 he would have been there for 21 months. Thats a pretty long time (in youth years, lol).
LittleBubble, that is true about traveling a certain distance from the base without taking leave. However, if they have four days off for Thanksgiving, he will not be able to take any more than those four days. They are not allowed to take leave while classes are in session. And, unfortunately, there's always a possibility of him having duty during those four days. The duty petty officers will not give him duty if he has filed a leave chit and it's been approved. They will, however, not leave him off the leave bill just because he may be traveling without leave.
My son has several friends from DLI who are from California -he has spent all of his little holidays being taken in by their families. It's been so nice to know that someone else's mom or dad has been feeding my boy on Thanksgiving or taking him out 4th of July! He only came home for Christmas. He doesn't come home on 4 day weekends (we live on the East coast). He is enjoying every bit of California that he can because his stay there will end soon. During mid year break he didn't even come home- he went camping in Yosemite State Park & then traveled to San Diego with friends. At first when he said he wasn't coming home, my feelings were a little hurt. Then I realized, he is living his dream - not mine. Now I'm so glad he is where he is. I had him for 20 yrs & I had to let him go. But, I have decided I'm not missing his graduation & my flight is booked. I can't wait to see him!!!!!!
KC'smom is right, everytime I get to feeling sad about my daughter being 2000 miles away, I just remember she is living "her dream". She has been their since June 9th and 2 weeks into school. She says she is happier than she has ever been.
2 weeks ago she and friends traveled to San Franscisco and this weekend they went driving through the mountains and along the coast. Now they are planning a trip to LA.
I just hope someone local does adopt her for Thanksgiving. However one of her friends is married and lives off base. They all crash at their apartment on the weekend and cook together. What a great time they have!! Oh to be young again!
That is so true about letting them live their dream and their lives! I struggle with not seeing my daughter more often than Christmas but she is happy, healthy, has great friends and doing what SHE wants and not what I expect her to do. Being a parent and having all the kids grown and gone Is sometimes tough but they all call when something fabulous or heart wrenching happens, their hearts never forget us! :-)
Okay, need some help please!!! My son was accepted for "flight crew". Are there any other moms/ loved ones here with CTI in flight crew. I'm feeling kind of nervous. You can feel free to message me!!!!
KC'smom, my understanding the either get assigned to a desk, aircrew or a ship to do their job after they finish at DLI. .At some point they get this assignment. Is he close to finishing at DLI?
Yes he graduates the end of Sept- just got his assignment today. He put in a request for aircrew & got it so he's happy. I'm not thrilled!! Hahaha, but I'm the neurotic mom who needs to let him go!! He told me about 3 extra schools he needs to go to now. Wondering if anyone's son has been to these schools? Or anyone's son or daughter on aircrew.
I think Aircrew school is in Pensecola. Keep the positve thougths going... he's come this far and he will do great! It's hard to let go. It's all about living their dream!
Thanks!! Its the swim school is in Fla. then he has a school in Washington state and another school in San Diego- all before going to Georgia. After Georgia he will be done. I could be wrong but I think the flight school in Pensicola is for pilots???
My daughters origianal contract was AAIRS (Search and Rescue Swimmer) she was to go to Air Crew school in Pensecola. She still hopes to do the Air Crew route after CTI and maybe someday for the AAIRs. She has been a swimmer since she was 4 but injured both tibias in DEP while running with the Navy Seal deppers..God had other plans for her right now!
Hi all, we just got word that our son will start Persian Farsee school the end of Sept. Anyone else's son/daughter in that language? He'll be getting out of deployment/off his ship the end of this month so he can move his family to Monterey in time to start classes. Any suggestions regarding housing, moving -with vs. without the Navy, who to contact for help, etc? Thanks!
My SN is also CTI Monterey for Persian Farsee going into the September class. My SR went directly from BC. I know the have base housing, but I don't know how to advise you in regard to the move.
Noni, it sounds to me like your sailor is already active duty and is taki g another class/assignment. His move information will be provided by the Transportation office. They will provide him with the info regarding housing and the actual move of household goods and the options he has. They will make it as smooth as possible for him and his family.
My son just left for boot camp yesterday. He will be going to DLI in Monterey for school but we don't know what language yet. I'm so excited to learn more from all of you that have sons and daughters in CTI.
Hi Cindy. Where did your son go after he graduated boot camp? All of this is so new to me and we really didn't get much info from my son's recruiter. I assumed he would graduate and go straight to Monterey to start school.
So, I haven't been able to chat with a mom of a sailor in Aircrew (CTI). I found an aircrew site (lots of new initials I can't make out- haha) and can't find anyone who knows of a CTI in Aircrew. I met a 'sonar guy' mom; a 'radar guy' mom etc but no CTI mom. Just wondering if there are any CTI Aircrew moms out there?
SarahsMom- I will have to send you a friend request so that we can share info! My son leaves DLI in Sept. Funny thing.... he bought a car several months ago. He was told the Navy will pay to have it sent to his assigned home base. Now, he has 3 more schools in 3 different states to go to, instead of just going straight to Georgia. So,he will be driving from Cali to Fla. and then back to San Diego and then Washington state and finally I think then he can have the car sent to Georgia!!! That is A LOT of driving!!
My SR is still in boot camp. He's PIR is 8/24!! He signed for CTI. In his letters he is saying that he may be Aircrew as well. I didn't know that CTI did Aircrew too. I've been reading about Aircrew and none of the ratings for Aircrew are CTI so I really don't understand. If someone does understand this and wants to shoot me a friend request it would be much appreciated!
Debbie in MD thank you so much for the great info!! Right now my focus is on PIR, on 8/24. After that, he has to get thru DLI. I know it's hard. He's very smart and very determined. I'll be checking in with everyone! I really appreciate it!
