For families and friends of Sailors who are stationed at Norfolk; for either Sea Duty or Shore Duty Sailors. Just make sure to keep OPSEC issues in mind and not disclose ship movements in advance.
Grasshopper- Wow, what an experience with the barracks?! I'm glad he was able to get into the apartments out in town. For those with sailors still in the barracks, I would suggest that they get their chain of command involved with issues like that. It may be the barracks inspecting them, but you would be surprised how quickly their attitudes change when they have to explain these "hits" to the Command Master Chief. I know some of the newer sailors are sometimes a little intimidated, and don't want to make waves, but that is what their chain of command is there for. I would have them start by talking to their LPO. This person is usually a First Class Petty Officer. They will usually either try to get the problem resolved, or take it to the Chief if they feel it needs to go that far. Depending on the problem, it may or may not need to go further up the chain. They usually try to resolve problems at the lowest level possible, but they will send it all the way to the CO if that's what it takes to get their sailors taken care of.
Thanks so much, Deb. Yes, I know that we are all being advised that it will be later this year (in the middle of Feb) before they have all of the tax changes finalized. I appreciate the info!
Need advice. When you send a package to you sailor's FPO address and the ship is underway are they pretty good with getting packages to them? I know I hear allot about sending care packeges when they are on deplyment and have not heard much negative. I need to send my son a new DVD player and some other things. I wanted him to get a PO Box but I don't think he wants to do that in case it does not get there before he leaves.
hi everyone. my name is barb and my daughter is a sailor at Norfolk presently. thought this would be a good group to join to keep up on the news. hope all is well with everyone talk later.
Welcome Barb, my son in norfolk on truman, says he's real busy, I can't figure out what he could be doing all this time as he claim, hopeful he's enjoyin himself.
Hello everyone. I am new to this group even though my son has been in Norfolk since mid December. He is on the USS Normandy. We feel pretty much in the dark because he lost his phone on his way there. It is kind of maddening sometimes not being able to contact him. Thankfully, a fellow sailor let him borrow his phone so we do know he actually made it there. (THANKS YOUNG!!) So, it is a comfort to come on here and kinda' see some of what's going on through all of your comments and questions.
Anyone who has Facebook, Can you do this little girl a favor? Her Daddy is deployed. If she wins the cutest kid contest, he will get a package of her pictures sent to him. Thank you all for voting!!!!!! BTW....These are personal friends of mine, too.
Fl.GATOR- You might mean HSC-26. Here is the link to the squadron site. http://www.hsc26.navy.mil You can read about the history and the mission. I'm not exactly sure where that squadron is hangered at the base. My son is with HS-7. They are just moving into the new hangars next to HSC-28. He got the keys and had the initial walk through last Friday. There is a lot of construction going on at NAS Norfolk with the repositioning of assets and consolidation of Helo squadrons to Norfolk.
Thanks helomom,My son is waiting for the hard copy of when he will be staring c-school and more info on exactly what he will be doing and when. He is single will he be be living near his squadron?Do you think he will need his car ?? So far, he hasn't,he has tried to avoid needing his car. We want to sell it ,its old and has over 200 thous. miles and setting in my driveway!!Thanks
FL Gator- I believe there is a free shuttle bus provided by the base that runs everywhere but it's a pretty big base. His command should be able to provide him with information when he gets connected with them. I've only been to the base a couple of times.
Hey, Im new to the group. My husband is stationed out in Norfolk, and he is due for shore orders in jan 2012. So Would love to know somemore about that side of being in the Navy. Hes out on a deployment now. Would love to have the insides to shore orders.
Hey I just joined this group!!! My sailor and I will be getting married this May and I will be moving out there to VA but to chesapeake I would love to meet some of you ladies. I know I am going to need some friends. My sailor is a Nuke ET on the might IKE. DO any of you guys have sailors on the IKE?
ok donna, i have to ask this question. you said your son is driving up to norfolk (i assume from your house in ga) where he will be staying while his sub is refueling. how long does it take to refuel a sub?
It's a great base!! Of course som of the surrounding areas are scary (which is so near pretty much most bases), VA beach is very close and is a nice but I hear not much is open around there right now. Our son is stationed there, but leaving for Afganastan very soon. The base is huge!! Yeah how long does it take to refill a sub??? Sorry I can't igve you eact details about the area even though I've been numerous times.
He will be fine.. Its us Mom's that get the "gray hairs" from wondering. They seem to adjust much better than we do..My daughter always asked me.. "Mom what's the problem?" So after a couple of weeks I quit worrying. And she was right there usually wasn't a problem. Its hard to think of our "babies" as all grown up and being fine without us. I have a 25 &21 year old and from the time they wee both 18 have loved the adult relationship with them. I hope you and your son have a great adventure together while he is in the Navy. They do amazing things.
My daughter was flown out to her ship by way od a helicopter also.. it too was out at sea.. and all i could think of was.. oh how awesome that would be to do.. wish I could do that.. She LOVED it! I guess I neve worried about the Navy stuff, cause I knew she woud be up with that.. It was some of the personal relationships problems she had for awhile that bothered me. But we all survived that too!
kelly metz- i think your son graduated the same time as my husband from bc, 11-12???he has completed A school and is stationed in Norfolk... what ship is your son???
Hi ladies.. my name is Dawn, and my son will be done with A school this week.. and go out to Virginia next friday..he will be on The Enterprise.. and he says they will fly him out to the ship.. as it is out to sea.. so glad I found this site !! is there anywhere we can go to see where the ship is heading ?? Thank You So Much for any info !!!
Hi everybody, my son arrived in VA about 2 weeks ago and we are going to drive down from NJ to see him this weekend. I know its a little late, but does anybody know a good, not too expensive, hotel to stay in around the base there. I appreciate any help anybody can give. Thank you.
Hi Proudmom7, I have been down a few times to visit my daughter who is stationed in VA. I have stayed at the Marriott which I got on priceline.com I have never paid more then 49.00 a night. You have to bid on a hotel, so you never know what hotel you are getting. Hint, always start very low on your bids and always pick 3 star. You are able to pick areas you want to be in, so you shouldn't be to far away.I was only about 10min away from her. The hotel is wonderful. Hope this helps...
ProudMom7, I highly recommend the Navy Lodge. As Johanna mentioned, it's only $75 and no tax and it's right at the base. It also has a kitchenette so that if you want to save money by having some of your meals in your room you can. It's a full size fridge, stove top, micro, sink and dishes. Very clean and nice!! We have stayed in the one at Norfolk and Little Creek.
My husband met his ship on his first deployment. He found out where they were when he went to the base and they got him his plane ticket. Even via military email, they will not be able to email specific dates/locations because navy email is never considered to be 100% secure. The way it worked for my husband was his XO emailed him, asked gave him a range of dates and said be ready to go on these dates, and gave him the name and info of the person he needed to get in touch with on base to set up his travel. He went in, they got his plane ticket set up, and three days later, he was heading for the other side of the world with another one of his new shipmates. They do their best to send people together when they can, which I know was a big comfort to me!!
Thanks for the help with the hotels, I really appreciate it. We ended up staying at the Quality Inn on Hampton Road - it was fine. We had a great weekend with our son and driving back home last night as soon as we got to Jersey it started snowing. When we woke up this morning we had about 5 inches. Funny how the weather is - we left here Friday and it was 60 degrees out and we come home late sunday to snow :(
Hi, Becky. Yes, because my son is there. Some are off-base. There is a barracks/dorm facility right there in Newport News that they stay in. The "base" that they are on...NEX/gym/track...is called Huntington Hall. He takes a shuttle over to his work. Other's may be close enough to their building or work area to walk. He had a room with a roommate/private bath, but transferred to another one....2 roommates and a hall community bath. He said he lives in a "closet!" Very small but he's ok with it. I bet there is much more space there than living on the ship!
A pretty cool rent split calculator is at http://www.splittherent.org. It's a good idea to put in writing the agreement regarding who pays what % of rent and utilities. And emphasize the importance of finding "no drama" roommates! :) My son shares an apartment off base and it's worked out well.
Keep in mind, according to my son they can only do this if they are ranked E4 or higher...otherwise unmarrieds have to get their living quarters through the Navy. There are some apartments that are considered military housing for these lower E1-E3 that are just off base. My son lives there and loves it. It's just behind Camp Allen Marine Base.
