my son has internet from month to month and says reception is not really good and he got it when he was in SA, he says depending on what building your housing is in depends on reception.  Mine uses US Cellular and we talk fine for his cell company.  Good Luck to all Schooling is really fast pace and difficult.

  • corpsmanwifeschu

Hubby got the best reception on Verizon in Jaenke Hall...in the laundry room. He didn't activate any internet there since he didn't have a laptop but he has his computer now plugged into his phone. The no data and calls at the same time stinks as it pauses his data when I send a text or call. Mail really sucks. I sent him a card for our anniversary and he never got it. They finally mailed it back to me three weeks after he graduated. The card was sent more than two months before.
  • worried mom HM (SA A School)

Ask my son about what internet he got he got "clear" and we have verizone as phone service he says its okay! I don't know what whatt hall he is in but sounds like he is doing okay!

Hey ladies...my son will graduate from A school on the week after Thanksgiving. We won't be able to attend. His C school is back in San Antonio. He did say that there isn't any room on base for them when they return for school. He states they have basically told them they have to be out Dec 16th. He and some buddies are looking to share rent on a house off base. Makes me nervous.

  • Vipergirl

My son is also staying in San Antonio for C School. I hope to find out more about the off site housing at graduation.
  • Lisa75

My daugher has been told the same thing about there being no room on base for C school.  I really have a problem with this.  She is still a first termer, & I don't trust them to start paying her BAH for her to get her own place for six months.  I am going to be down there during the break, and am going to talk to everyone I can find out about this.  The housing office, finance, & whatever cheif is in charge at that moment.  Both me & my spouse are AIr Force and putting a brand new military member in this situation while they are in training is really irresponsible if you ask me.  My daughter is still being overpaid her BAS and nobody has helped her fix that yet either.  That will sure be a doosey when she has more than 2 zero paychecks sometime in the future.....

  • Doreen(07/272)

The kids graduating next week are in holding company. Every question asked is met with "I don't know". I agree, it does seem irresponsible, and likely impossible. How are they supposed to find decent housing, in a short time frame?
  • Doreen(07/272)

Also, we aren't able to attend graduation, work schedules and school schedule do not permit.
  • MomP(Helen)

    Hi ladies,

It's been a few days so I had to play catch up. I really wish they hadn't closed HM school at GL. At least there things were more organized. Sounds like they weren't ready for that many navy personnel.

  • Judi(NavyMom)

    @HJPrescott I agree :(   Appears disorganized.

My SR is coming home for the holiday. Says it will cost her about $50 for a cab to airport.  Does anyone know about an airport shuttle?

By the time she pays for ticket and now cost to get to airport...ouch.

  • MomP(Helen)

    @Judi Ouch is right.

My SR is on medical hold at RTC should be leaving for Tx this next week. She's been so excited to get to her school. Now I'm wishing they'd keep her for a few more weeks. It would be cheaper for her to come home from GL, we live 5 hours away.

  • MomAnt

Judi... Yes there is an airport shuttle according to my son. I will see what more I can find out for you.

  • Doreen(07/272)

Ok ladies...I need some help. My son is broke. He is in the middle of a crisis as he plans on graduation next week. His checking acct wiht NFCU is frozen since he discovered fraudulent charges on his acct. Is there a Western Union on base?

  • wlbradford (Rota Spain)

Praying for your son, Doreen. That's just awful!!!
  • MomP(Helen)

OOh no that's bad. He's in my prayers. My daughter signed up with live alert just for this reason.

  • MomAnt

For anyone who is interested in the airport shuttle... my son is not a wealth of info but this is what I got from him...

      • Well from what I know, it costs seven dollars and they will check in our bags at the ship. It's leaving saturday. And I think they just show up.

      • It'll pick up people from each barracks, and checking them in at the barracks eliminates the need to do it at the airport. Idk what time it leaves though. And they are bringing more than one shuttle. They've done it before so they should know how many seats they need

Hope this helps. Maybe someone else will get more info from their sailor. :)

  • Jana

I'm leaving in the morning to drive to San Antonio to pick up my son and his sailor buddy who will be spending Thanksgiving and the weekend with us.  I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving!!

  • wlbradford (Rota Spain)

We're headed there tomorrow too! SO EXCITED!!! Safe travels everyone, and Happy Thanksgiving!!
  • Judi(NavyMom)

    TY MomAnt.

  • tripletmom+2

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! My daughter loves SA, but said the food is awful! She actually misses boot camp chow!!  Coming home for Christmas, 2 whole weeks!! Can't wait to see her. Already dreading another goodbye :(  She said she won't class up until Jan.  Lots of cleaning in her future!! She had watch on Thanksgiving and again last night!  Boring, she said!  A bunch of them were playing football today!  Kind of funny, my daughter never plays football!  She must be really bored!! lol

So far, so good. She is happy and gets along great with her roomie! Happy sailor=Happy Mom!!

  • milomom 946/HM A-School

Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday. I hear the USO put out a nice spread - good people.
I also hear we might be picking orders today. Closer to home would be nice...
  • Renee

@flangl18 - I'm willing to bet your son will take you up on a home cooked meal!! My son was home for Thanksgiving and was very happy to be away from the Army food.  We went through the same scenario last year with our son - hoping to leave for BC earlier than slated, but it didn't happen.  The best part is that he now appreciates spending time with his family!  Best wishes to your son, and thank you for sharing your experiences at Ft. Sam with us!

  • wlbradford (Rota Spain)

Very interesting Flangl18...thank you for the information.

  • Sara Ship 07 Div 012

Flangl18, thank you for that information.  I was worried about my son.  His A & C school are both there, and I wasn't sure how they would work it if he had to be off base for C school.  I feel better about that now.  I am glad we have talked him out of taking his truck down, didn't really feel that it was necessary.  Is there lots of available transportation down there for them?

  • LydiaEmily

Hey guys, I had a few questions. First of all is HM school still 96 days (14 weeks)? And do they usually graduate a week or so after they finish up classes? Does anyone know how soon after graduation they get to come home? Trying to figure out a timetable here and my hubby is zero help! Lol.

  • worried mom HM (SA A School)

LydiaEmily-A school is 12 weeks but there grad date can always get pushed back and then back again. Theb they have clinicals for 2 weeks. Depending on C school. They graduate the following Monday, and could fly home the next day or even that Monday. But it will depend on his leave time, is he coming home for Christmas or did he come for Thanksgiving. If he does't come he could come for 2 weeks after graduation or longer depending on where he is stationed. Hope this helps!
  • Renee

@worried mom - several pages back in this discussion there was mention that clinicals might not happen for our sailors.  Do you know if that has been resolved?

  • shoprat

My daughter was told they do not have clinicals at all, but it seems that nobody knows grad dates or nobody will tell. It's too bad for family that would like to see them graduate; it's usually much cheaper to make flight arrangements ahead of time.

  • wlbradford (Rota Spain)

Shoprat, my daughter was told the same thing...no clinicals in A school. I just heard from my daughter...they pick orders at 1300 today!!!! I pray that mine chooses a C school. She's torn between a C school and Spain!!!!!! As a mom...I'm torn, but I truly believe that she'll benefit more from a C school now than if she tried for it later. However, all of her instructors are saying they should go quad-zero at first. Decisions, decisions. I just have to remember that they aren't mine, they're hers to make. :)

  • annev

wlbradford and Rhonda - My son decided when he was in A School there that he really wanted to go to C school in radiology.  He worked hard and was first in his class, but there was no slot for that C school, and he didn't really want any of the other ones offered. So he picked Japan - was what he originally wanted before he started A school.  He has been there 3 weeks and loves it!  He is still going to shadow in the radiology department with hopes of coming back to C school at some point.  Hope there are some good options for your sailors that fits them well!

  • Tink

So nervous to find out what my daughter picked. I think she was leaning towards Italy, but, not sure. I would love to have her closer to home, but, I want her to pick what makes her happy! Shoprat, I think your daughter picked what I wanted my daughter to choose. It has to be really nerve racking for them to decide. Good luck to them all! I also would love to find out the graduation date in order to make plans. Hope we find out soon.

  • wlbradford (Rota Spain)

Me too Tink!!! Mine was leaning toward Spain!!! REALLY??? LOL I'm just being the typical mom. I don't want her that far away from me, but then again, this is her life and she's making her memories. I have to remember that and tell myself that from time to time! :)

Good luck to the rest of you who have family picking orders. Just listening to my daughter, it IS nerve-racking because they all know that it's shaping their futures. I dont know about the rest of you...but I'm sitting on pins and needles here!!

  • navymomsrock

For those of you whose kids are picking orderes today, when did they start A School?  Trying to figure out when my son might pick.

  • Tink

First day of class was Oct. 19th

  • wlbradford (Rota Spain)

Tink...my baby is going TO SPAIN!!!!!! I have very mixed feelings right now!!
  • Tink

wlbradford - That's awesome! My daughter picked Washington state. She said all the others are giving her a hard time saying Yuck. But, I kind of put that option in her head. Anyone out there know about the Kitsap base. I read good things about it. I know there is lots of rain, but, we get plenty of rain here in Florida too.

  • wlbradford (Rota Spain)

    Why Washington? Just curious.

  • sheryl Navy 2

My son picked Italy so happy for him . I wasnt at all surprized as we had moved them around as kids from Europe to the States...Hope all your corpsman got where and what they wanted . What an exciting time for them all ....

  • Tink

Well, she was leaning heavy towards Italy and I told her if she decided to stay in the states, she should pick there (WA). I found where it was voted best overall base by the Navy Times. I think the family and BF issues made her decide to stay in the states. We are from Florida, so any base on the east coast is pretty drab for us. I also read that the west coast bases or more laid back than the east coast. I know going to Europe sounds exciting, but, I was afraid if she went there and didn't like it, then it's a looonnngg way back home to visit. Honestly, I think being on a ship is probably the best way to see most of the world. My husband was in the navy and he was on a ship and went to many different ports and loved it. But, I hope, for her sake, Washington is a great place. Have you ever been?

  • Sara Ship 07 Div 012

Just reading what everyone's kids are picking just makes me jealous.  They are just starting out with the chance to travel to all these exciting places makes me wish that I had enlisted when I was their age.  They are going to be going to some interesting places.

  • wlbradford (Rota Spain)

Yes Sara, they really are! No, Tink...I've never been to Washington. California...yes. I lived there for 10 years, but never to Washington. Sounds like a really good pick for her!! Congrats to your daughter!!

  • Judi(NavyMom)

    Washington state is Fabulous.... congratulations!!!

  • shoprat

My daughter chose Kings Bay, Georgia;(sub base) she had been talking about Hawaii all along, but said that order was with the Marines. It looks like a beautiful area...I hope she's happy with her choice; if she's happy, I am! Congrats to all the others who got the orders they wanted!

  • Angela (Kristen's Mom)

My daughter has always wanted to live in Japan, since 7th grade actually, and well she'll be there soon!  Do you think I could go there as a Mail-order Bride?  I whinned so much while she was in boot camp, I'm afraid that my friends may all change there addresses once she goes to Japan!   Pass the tissues, please . . .

  • wlbradford (Rota Spain)

I know the feeling...Spain is so far away!!!!!!
  • wlbradford (Rota Spain)

I keep reminding myself that, flangl18, but it's not working so much right now. I'm sure it will get easier, just like boot camp did. I hope!
  • shoprat

Thank you flangl18; I really thought she would be one of those who went overseas, but I guess she's not ready for that decision yet; is there still the chance she could go to sea, being a female on a sub base?

  • Tink

Shoprat - at least you know she will be close enough to go visit! And wlbradford, I guess you know where you will taking a trip to. I hope all of our sailors are happy, that's the most important thing! Have a good day everyone!

  • shoprat

Tink, I know I'd be happy for her (to have her see "far away" places) but I'm also relieved that I can easily visit, at least for the next few years...If we made it through boot camp we can surely make it through this! I had braced myself knowing she could have easily decided to go overseas; best wishes to you all!

  • shoprat

Thanks for the info. flangl; sometimes she gets impatient with my questions, as I tend to repeat myself :)
