I am new member, our son John left this morning to San Antonio.   he was not sure who will pick him up or where he goes after that...not surprise..=)  i told him to call me or text me when he arrive safe and sound though no call yet.  i hope he is ok.   maybe he does not have a chance to text or call yet.  will find out soon i guess.

i have some questions:  Is the graduation ceremony similar as the one here in Great Lakes IL for boot camp?   are most parents attend the A school ceremony?   what is the C school?

John wants to be part of the field medical team.   when will he know if he will be part of this team (7wks? as it says prev.message) and how long is the training? what is after that?  is the training he is getting in A or C school counts toward college credits?

    Thank you

HI Ladies. My son is graduating A school on the 24th to his first duty in Italy .He had bought a 19 inch TV with built in DVD player back in September, and obviously won't be packing it up to take with !
if you have a sailor that is interested ,it has been a life saver for he and his buddies downtime.
    Contact SN Osullivan ,max
Class010. Rm 2351 Fralish Hall. Or his cell is 978 877 3279. He is asking $100
  • Sethsmom

    Hi Sheryl-
I've told my son about the TV. He is coming to San Antonio for a school tomorrow. He may be interested.
  • sheryl Navy 2

    Hi Seth's mom.
Welcome and I told max to answer his phone from now on ! And I think Seth got hold of max as he's looking at tv tmrw .
this is how we moms do it !!!
    Take care
  • Sethsmom

Great Cheryl! That's right! Moms can get it done! LOL. I hope it works out for both of them.
  • LeysaNavymom

KathyHM A school ....thank you so much!   i will check txfuturebabydocmom too.   also what is PIR?

yes marines its where he would like to work with...i am sure basic w/marines might not be that easy either....well will see.

by the way.....John did texted me about 30min. ago saying..."i am in my room now".   that was a lot of information....somethings never change...its kind of funny.....=) hope he says more as time goes by and miss his family.

    Again thank you Kathy!

  • chadsmom93

My Sailor shipped to A school today from RTC. He has not called yet to let me know he is checked in and all is well. Has anyone from div 034 arrived??

  • mome2jord

My son is getting ready to PIR in Great Lakes on the 20th, I wanted to find out what he allowed to take with him to San Antonio?  What kinds of things are they allowed to have?  During their A school do they ever earn the right to fly home for the weekend like Saturday or Sunday?

  • mome2jord

Thanks for the information LeysaNavymom!  We will definitely go down to San Antonio often to visit.  I just know our son is excited to come home and visit, especially everyone who could not make it to graduation.

  • LeysaNavymom

lots of info for sure...thank you txfuturebabydocmom.!  We have mail some civilian clothes to him since he did not take those with him.    waiting to get a confirmation of his new address.

kathy thank you too for the information.  yes you are right about when they have to spend from their own salary.  Friday night he wanted to go see a movie with his step brother Jack 15 years old.  I say ok , but my son said, Jack needs money for the movies then I said now you have a salary I am sure you can afford to pay for your brother's movie, but then he said why me?  he ended up paying but the moral of the story is that now since he has a salary it hurts him to pay for others.   Then I said we have raised you for 18 years now is your term to pay for your own things.    Including his cell phone bill.   I told him you can pay us $20/mth until Oct of this year then you can get your own cheaper plan.   If you do not pay us $20/mth then we will cancel your line with verizon and you will probably have to pay more per month for your own plan.   At least we are giving him a choice to pay a min. for his cell phone until Oct. that is when his contract expires.

    lets keep in touch!

cathy-When my son PIR'd in August, he left Saturday (the next day) for San Antonio.  I think for the most part, unless they are staying in Great Lakes for A school, they leave the day after PIR unless there is a flight issue or something.

  • Jana

Yes, I am in Texas too, but his graduation was in the summer and we have hardly ever been out of Texas, so we drove to Great Lakes and made kind of a mini vacation out of it, but just got to spend time with him on Friday after PIR and I met him at the airport and spent time with him until his flight left.  He just graduated from A school and we also went to San Antonio for his graduation.  It was nice, but not as many parents come to A school graduation.  He is now in Pensacola for C school,  and I am not sure whether I will make the trip for his graduation from there or not.  Still debating that.  Good luck to your stepson and to you too!!

  • Sethsmom

Cathy- this is just my opinion and please don't be offended but I think PIR would mean much more for your son. They go through so much there and to know they will see a familiar face at the end is comforting. A School grad is not as much of a deal as PIR. I would talk through it in letters with your son and phone calls you may get. BC is tuff no matter how prepared they think they are. And in A school they are much more 'in touch' than BC. Right now the live for the mail from home! Just another moms thoughts. :0)
  • wlbradford (Rota Spain)

I agree with sethsmom. Boot grad was way more special than A school grad to my sailor. We live in AR so we flew to GL for PIR and had the best time! Since she's been in San Antonio, we talk all the time and she doesn't really care if we miss A school grad since we made it for the important one. Just my thoughts. :)
  • Doreen(07/272)

My son had Verizon when he arrived in August, and the internet was iffy. His buddy had a hotspot, and service was just as hit or miss. He was in Frailish, now in Jaenke. And he has Sprint. He joked over Christmas that he had better reception out salt water fishing than he did in San Antonio...

  • sheryl Navy 2

I agree that PIR is a very special end to all the training they have gone through . Butalso there is the fact that your sailor may get orders overseas for 3 yrs ,as our son has .
We will be going down to San Antonio in 2wks to .Its just the right thing for our family as we are also moving so he won't be coming back to Boston area anytime soon. You have to go with what works for your family and sailors .:)
  • Doreen(07/272)

Anyone have a sailor starting PT school Tuesday?

  • christine

Happy New Year to all!!  Hope everyone had a safe and quality time with your sailor...  I miss my daughter like crazy!  She will be graduating from A school on the 31st so we are hopefully going to that in San Antonio! She got orders to San Diego and was wondering when she will leave? Should we plan to see her the weekend before grad, and leave after or wait til she leavesif its just a couple of days... SA is closer for us than SD... Thanks moms

  • MomAnt

Help! Things are not looking good for my son in this rate. :( He just failed his 2nd test and will be starting over, I guess. One more failed test and he is out... and put on a ship as undesignated. I have so many questions about that process and what to expect. I don't know if anyone in this group can help. Maybe someone can point me in the right direction for that info? Thanks.

  • Doreen(07/272)

MomAnt, there are study groups that are available to the students. They are usually led by a student in another class that is doing well. My son said he used an online study tool as well. The studying is a lot of work. My son never studied in HS, and in A school studied for hours a day. It is a ton of information, and most importantly, he needs to relax. Sometimes stress causes silly mistakes.

  • shoprat

My daughter led study groups and commented that many don't take advantage of the study groups; from what I understand, if the sailor is undesignated, he or she will be basically be doing the "dirty" work...cleaning, painting, dishes, etc. Your sailor may be more inclined to study harder if he knew what is in store for him.

  • MomAnt

Thanks everyone... I will look for the group. He never studied in school because he didn't need to. I told him it would come back to haunt him later. He knew what he was risking if he failed in A-School so he DID study, and after he failed the 1st test he REALLY got on it and utilized all the tools available. He doesn't test well and now he's stressed. Not good. But thanks again... I'll hope for the best and TRY to prepare for the alternative.

  • worried mom HM (SA A School)

MomAnt-I hope everything works out with your son.  I would be so sad if that happened to me good luck!

  • futureHMwife

Hi, is there an overview of what they do week to week at A school? My husband graduates boot camp Jan 20 and will be flying to San Antonio the 21st. Also, can he have his cell phone at the airport or do I have to wait and mail it to him at a later day with his laptop?

  • futureHMwife

ok Thank you Kathy and Bellachella. He told me in a letter a few weeks ago that he couldn't have either at the airport so I guess he got some wrong information. I will pick him up a black backpack at the NEX in GL next week. I got him some anatomy flashcards to give him as well lol. We knew about how they choose orders, so I'm hoping he does well and is able to pick a place that is on our list we like. I hope he is phase 3 by the middle of March so the babies and I can go visit and he get to stay the weekend with us. I guess we will just wait and see how quickly the classes start once he gets there. O, he also said he will be participating in the RAP program and will get to come home for 2 weeks after he finishes A school, and work with the recruiter in out area for a week. So since this is the case, if I go to his A school graduation will he be able to ride home with me?

  • futureHMwife

Thanks Kathy, I know its a long shot, but I figured since he is coming home anyway... lol I guess we will find out soon enough. I am just ready for boot camp to be over so he can call more.

  • CDMom

My son just arrived Saturday to San Antonio as a Hospital Medical Corpsman.  What comes after A School?  Do they all have C school and if so do they all go to Pensacola?

  • Jana

futureHMwife-I wouldn't count on him being able to ride home with you, but maybe you will have better luck than I did.  My son graduated A school on Dec. 13.  We were there for his graduation.  He was taking 2 weeks leave right after that as it was right before Christmas.  I wanted to let him ride home with me, but he said he couldn't.   I live about 5 hours from San Antonio and it would have been so much easier if I could have just brought him home with me, but no, I drove home that Tuesday after graduation, and he had to fly from San Antonio to Houston on Wednesday and I had to drive to Houston to pick him up at the airport on Wednesday.  He said something about cars had to be inspected before they could leave or something.  If I had known that ahead of time, maybe we could have made some arrangements to see what needed to be done.  CDMom-not all corpsmen have C school.  Some work in hospitals or have other duty stations.  I think the majority of C schools are in San Antonio, but there are some in Pensacola.  My son is currently in AVT C School in Pensacola.

  • CDMom

Thank you Kathy and Jana.  You ladies are a wealth of information.  I just love Navy4Moms.  You got me through boot camp and now on to A School.

  • Renee

futureHMwife - you shouldn't have to buy him a backpack, the SRs are issued them in bootcamp.  When we went to graduation I had a bunch of stuff for my son (food, clothes, shoes, computer, phone, chargers...) to go through.  After the graduation ceremony and the sailors got liberty, we left the base for lunch and had time to return to our hotel to just hang out and visit.  We used that time to go through the things he thought he would want to take in the backpack.  The following morning we met him at the airport with all the things he had chosen and he fit them all in - you wouldn't believe how much stuff fits in there!!  He managed to get a pair of running shoes, computer, jeans, undies,Tshirts, workout clothes and a bunch of snacks.  It is really an amazing sight to see all the sailors at the airport, with their bags & stuff!  Best of luck to you both!

  • shoprat

Good luck to your Sailor MomAnt!

  • futureHMwife

Jana- Well our car already has base stickers lol. Plus it is a 13+ hour drive from where I am, and 2ish hours to the nearest airport. So hopefully we will have all the information we need before hand and I can hang out a couple extra days if needed so we can ride home together. Thanks for the heads up so I can be sure to mention it when the times comes.

  • futureHMwife

Renee- Sorry I didn't see you post a minute ago... okay good. I had read where some people were saying they were buying backpacks for their Sailors. Good to know he will have one big enough for all his stuff. Also, I know it is different for every Sailor, but what time of the day did your Sailor's flight leave out the day after graduation?

  • futureHMwife

lol sorry, another question. I saw someone mention the internet may not be good in some parts of the barracks? Is there only wireless internet or does anyone know if their is a place to plug in an Ethernet cord? I'm trying to get my lists in order for next week so I remember to bring everything to him at the airport.

  • Renee

futureHMwife - his flight left Midway in the late afternoon, but he had been there all day.  It was actually funny that we left him around 8AM to drive back to Atlanta and his flight arrived in ATL 30 minutes before we passed the airport!!!!

Oh, about the NEX after graduation - don't go in there unless you really need to (or you like crowded places).  There is another NEX location nearby, close to the Navy Lodge which is much less crowded.

  • Sethsmom

Hi futureHMwife- in talking with Seth today he has no Internet at all right now. He is doing everything on his phone. He is hoping to get a data card once he gets settled!
  • medic mom

I know that my son ended up getting one of those usb internet cards. He got it wjile in SA. The carrier is Cloud. I think. It seems to work pretty good for him.
  • futureHMwife

Renee- I'm going to the NEX Thursday morning lol, but thanks for the heads up! I am driving with my 4 yr old and 1.5 yr old so we are arriving Wednesday and staying until Sunday up there and plan to hang out at the airport alll day Saturday. We hope we get to be there with him all day, I'll be sad if he has an early flight.

Sethsmom and medic mom- okay good to know that too. I'll dig out the Ethernet cord and if that doesn't work we will get him a usb internet card. lol We want to be able to skype so the kids can see him.

  • kimberlydale (corpsmanmom)

Just talked to my son who is in SA and he was saying the verizon hotspot works REALLY well for internet . I don't know what that even is ....but apparently it works ;):)

  • Sethsmom

Hi Cheryl! Seems Max and Seth have met and the TV is just right for what Seth was looking for! He and Max are in the same hall and met as soon as Seth got there yesterday - even though they didn't realize! Good luck to Max in Italy and of course to you also.
    Lesley.
  • futureHMwife

lol kimberlydale! Well we have AT&T, so hopefully if he needs an internet card or hotspot the ones from them will work. Did you son just get to San Antonio? If so, have his classes started yet? I was reading that it can take a couple weeks for them to fill up.

  • JustinsMom

Hi my son Justin arrived yesterday for A school in San Antonio!

  • futureHMwife

Thanks, Bellachella. I'll just have let him decide to do about internet once he is settled him his room. I'll just be happy he will have his phone and can call/text when not busy lol

  • Doreen(07/272)

posting again...anyone have a sailor starting C school today for Physical Therapy assistant?

  • kimberlydale (corpsmanmom)

futureHMwife.....yes my son just got to SA on Sat. and as of today rumor has it there classes will not start for 5 weeks. I have no definate info. so if anyone knows anything I would love to hear what is going on!!!

  • dadyellow

We talked to our son last night and he also said it would be 5 weeks, I beleive it is typical for them to wait a few weeks before starting school.

  • MomP(Helen)

My daughter went back after the holidays only to find she was bumped out of her class (which was to start this week). Now she's not sure when she'll start.

  • chadsmom93

My son arrived on saturday also, he did call last night. He is doing well. He does not have a roommate and after 8 weeks with so many other guys he is a little lonely. But, I told him to enjoy the quiet he would most likely get a roommate at some point. It does seem it will be a while before they start actual school. But I told him to find the library find the gym and the church. Hopefully these weeks of down time will fly by.

  • futureHMwife

Well I know there are a lot of HM bound recruits graduating Jan 20 from Great Lakes, so hopefully the classes will fill up fast once they get there. Will they fly to San Antonio next Saturday or hold them in Great Lakes a couple days? So if they all do have to wait 5ish weeks do they just do odd and end jobs on the base?

  • MomP(Helen)

They have special classes they go to and they have to stand watches.
