Great news. Son will phase up tomorrow. He still has to be on base aT 7 am Sat for duty assignments and then find somebody to either trade with for Sunday evening after we leave or find somebody to just do his duty. Once he does that he can come with us for the rest of the time until we leave.

Kate-he got his first tattoo shortly after arriving here. It is on his chest so is hidden under his uniform. It was a tolerable design. This new one though makes mesh udder. Itis the title of his favorite song and is written in 2 inch letters from one shoulder to the other just under the collar bones so it won't show. I will not use the language here, but suffice it to say he will be embarrassed when his first daughter learns to read.
  • DramaSoul

I have to admit that I am glad my son isn't into the tattoo thing...yet.  He wouldn't wanna spend the money on it anyway!  My daughter has two...one in her mid-back and on just below her waist on her back.  Both are small.  She is an elementary school teacher so they don't show unless she wants them to! She was 18 and 20 when she got them.

    Teach...glad to hear the news!!

I am a United States Sailor.  Who am I?

    Navy Tattoo Fails....

  • DramaSoul

Just heard from my Corpsman.  Spoke for about an hour.  It was like that first letter home from boot camp or that first real phone call.

    SmileyCentral.com

He has moved into Devil Doc Hall.  Permanent rack assignments will be done on Monday.  He is very excited about beginning this phase of training.  He knows is will be hard but he is up to the task.  I hope his previous martial arts experience will help with the MCMAP (Marine Corps Martial Arts Program). He could earn a tan belt by the end of the 8 weeks.

    SmileyCentral.com

Looks likes lots of simulated field med training as well.

As to those tattoo fails...wow...kinda scary.

And Craig...thanks for the the Funny pages!!!

NavyGirlzMom--I don't think that's true unless it has something to do with their 4 digit number (sorry, don't know the official terminology for that), but hopefully someone more in the know besides me will respond.  My son signed a 8 year contract--5 years active duty and 3 years reserve.  He went to A school in San Antonio, and then AVT C school in Pensacola.  He is now working at a naval hospital in Italy.

  • Craig

Since you ladies are talking about NEC codes (the 4 digit codes), I made a post  in the "discussion forum" above to help you understand it....

Just to clarify one thing.  EVERY sailor must do 8 years.   This is normal, EVERYONE signs up for 8 years.  Some will do:

4 years active, 4 years inactive = 8 years or

5 years active, 3 years inactive = 8 years or

    6 years active, 2 years inactive = 8 years

  • Maria ( 9/132 - HM- 04-2011)

Navygirlzmom, my son also signed up for Corpman rate and after c school he was assigned to a hospital in Jacksonville. Good luck

CRAIG WHO'S THE BEST? ( You are of course!) keep the info coming! And thank yoy
  • Teach

Well...good news and bad news...they phased son up tp 3, but gave him watch from 12-16 today. Kind of kills the day. We enjoyed the Riverwalk last night though. It is very relaxing. Sailor son wanted to take 16 yo bro to Hooters for the first time. Let's just say it was both funny and embarrassing. The waitress was very good natured, but 16 yo was overtly flirting, trying to get her phone number, and had his picture taken with his arm around her multiple time. He even ordered 20 wings, knowing he couldn't eat that many so he could ask her to share them. Teenagers and their hormones. LOL
  • Renee

Teach - cute story about your younger son!  There is also a Twin Peaks restaurant to the north of the city.  Same concept, but better food and cuter waitresses.  When my son was in A school he and his friends went several times.  Wishing you and your family a great visit!

  • DramaSoul

Craig...this is me pushing the 'like' button to your Twin Peaks reference!

Also...if a Sailor 're-ups' how long is the second enlistment?

  • alexcmom

@Teach...laughing my head off. My son did the same thing. Took myself and his 12yr old sister to Hooters for lunch! And then ordered the wings!  Glad you're having fun and getting some laughs in with your sailor.

  • DramaSoul

Craig...as I understand it, women are allowed to do FMTB AFTER they have been to their first duty station.  I totally disagree with this...I think they should be allowed to 'go green side' right out of HM school.  I met some of my son's classmates who were female and who would have loved to have gone onto FMTB.  And...they seemed fit and qualified.

And...YOU ARE THE BEST.  Thanks so much for all the great info and jokes...

  • desireenavygf (Ship 11 DIV 322)

Navygirlzmom - my husband is currently in c school in San Antonio as far as you daughter getting her last 4 yrs as ship duty it all depends on what orders are availed when it's time for them to choose orders. The best thing for your daughter to do is to score top of here class so she can have top pick on orders. Orders are pick based on there gpa in there class. But it's true that a corpsman can go through there whole contract and never be on a ship but if she is makin this a career she wants to be either on a ship or with the marines so that she can advance. If you have any questions feel free to ask me.
  • DramaSoul

txbabydocmom...I was under the impression that women could not go FMF right out of A school.  At least that is what I was told by some of the women in my son's class when we were chatting before the ceremony.

  • Jenn_NicksWifey

NavyGirlzMom- Sailors receive BAS basic allowance for sustenance, then are charged for their meals. My hubby is at Great Lakes and I just spent the weekend with him. We ate in the galley (had to pay for mine) and the food was very good.
  • OmahaRudy

My son is now in San Antonio! Class begins Aug 14! Exciting next step in his career.
  • DramaSoul

NicksWifey...according to my son, the food at GL is preferable to the food at SA.  I did hear from him this weekend and he said the food at Camp P is actually quite good.  He is basing a lot of this on the salad bar and whether or not they serve 'mystery meat'.

  • Jenn_NicksWifey

Navygirlzmom - He is in A school there. All the Sailors stuck their id cards in a reader and entered their PINs. He did say that they are charged for their meals whether they eat there or not, which irritates him. He's very frugal and older than must new Sailors at 27. So he knows his way around the grocery store. I haven't heard anything about other bars, but I was impressed by the variety available there. You could pick from deli, Italian, Mexican or Chinese food and there was a grill outside.

Craig...I just got the JFK Ship 09 Challenge Coin.  It is BEAUTIFUL!!! The detail is amazing.  I confess I looked at it with my loupes on!  BravoZulu to you!! You are an artist, of that there is no doubt. SmileyCentral.com

  • Maria ( 9/132 - HM- 04-2011)

When my son was in San Antonio I think most of his check went to food. He said the food in SA was nothing like great lakes. He is now in JAX it is better than SA but not as good as GL
  • Craig

Drama - Glad you liked it.   Believe me, it will be the 1st of many your son will get.

I just received the jpg on the USS Chicago Ship-7.  It came out really nice!  I get the 4 sample coins in about 3 days, then once I approve them, they will be minted.  I think PiRGifts will have them on ebay about a week from now.  But who knows for sure?

They have been getting on me for not having the JFK info sheet done yet, but I've been so busy lately.  At least I have chapter 1 thru 3 done, chapter 4 still pending.  Hopefully I will have that package completed this week.

Here is what the USS Chicago will look like.  The letter "I" in Chicago is the Sears tower.

  • Katze90210 (3/113)

Craig was there one made for Ship 3 ? That is the ship my son was on in Bootcamp.
  • DramaSoul

Let me know when the JFK package is complete! I am patient. I am going to give it to him when he graduates from FMTB.
  • 1proudmom

Does anyone know what airport they usually fly into if stationed at Pensacola?

  • 1proudmom

Is there a group for Pensacola moms?

  • Jana

1proudmom--I believe when my son arrived in Pensacola for C school in January, he flew into Pensacola International Airport.  Is your sailor in C school or at the naval hospital there?

  • Craig

Katze - I haven't designed that one yet.  I'm actually having a real hard time with the Kearsarge and the Reuben James.   They are so hard since they have such unique stories behind them. It's really hard to capture it in a coin.  It sucks being a perfectionist but  I have to have everything correct.

Jana - Yep, they fly into Pensacola.  All they need to do is go to the USO, and they will have a bus come and get him.

    For Pensacola groups, go here:

    or here

Craig...I am eternally grateful for your perfectionist approach! I love the JFK coin.  It really is beautiful.

I was just telling a different another group how sailors fold their covers (hats) into weird ways to show their defiance to uniformity by shaping it.  It’s (the cover) is the most abused uniform item a Sailor has.

I needed pictures to discribe "Liberty cuffs", and low and behold I found this picture on my veterans forum of a Hospital Corpsman liberty cuff uniform.

I just wanted to share it with you guys.....

    Here is what I wrote:

    --------------------------

It's funny, because I was just telling my son how we use to bend the rules and shows our defiance to uniformity.  It's with our liberty cuffs.  I actually had my son bring home his spare jumper top so I can ship it to Korea for the liberty cuffs to be put in.  I will make him a sailor just like I was!   I know you'll ask,

Liberty Cuffs are embroidered patches that were sewn inside the cuffs of Navy dress blue uniforms. These uniforms are worn by Navy enlisted men, pay grades E-2 through E-6. The embroidered patches were sewn using a hidden stitch, which resulted in a regulation looking uniform when the cuffs were safely hidden and buttoned, but once the sailor was on liberty, he unbuttoned and rolled the cuff up just one roll in order to display the fancy embroidered designs. Any type of embroidery on the inside of the cuffs was always unauthorized and wearing the uniform with the sleeves rolled up was likewise unauthorized.

Sailors have always been the most creatively artistic of all the branches of the military, what with their tattoos, scrimshaw carving, sea shell art and ships built inside bottles, they even took up embroidery and sewing to pass the time while on board ship

  • Craig

I know you guys will ask about the covers (hats) too, so here is what I wrote about the hats:

    -----------------------------------------------------------

MBMOM - Bravo Zulu to you about knowing what a dixie cup is.

Here was the question and answer to the boot camp moms test #2:

    http://www.navyformoms.com/group/ctratemoms/forum/topics/boot-camp-...

    Question:

    7. You and Jack wait around while John changes into his dress whites. He gets dressed and is about to leave when he remembers something. "Damn it," he says, "where did I put my Dixie Cup?" What is a "Dixie Cup?"

    1. An athletic supporter
    2. A wad of chewing tobacco
    3. A Sailor's white hat
    4. A type of wrench

    Answer:

    Answer: 3. A Sailor's white hat
Nothing identifies a Sailor like the white, round hat (cover) he wears with his dress uniform. Each work group on a ship shapes their hats to their job. Aircrew people usually was slightly folder on both sides to simulate wings. It’s the most abused uniform item a Sailor has, as it shows your defiance to uniformity by shaping it. .

Signalmen have theirs back to simulate the air blowing thru their hair (from being topside),
Airdale having their "Gull Wings" for the Dixie cap,
and we CT's had ours sparkling white, slightly curled at the rim, and worn at a jaunty angle (cocked to one side) , as our simple act of disobedience, defiance, and failure to follow the rules. (see my profile picture)

I think you'll get a kick out of this "All Hands" from Nov 1988 which explains it all. Look at page 33 (which is actually 35 of 52).
(Note: It takes a while to load since it's a huge magazine)
    http://www.navy.mil/media/allhands/acrobat/ah198811.pdf

Man, the Dixie cup was the most abused piece of uniform that all Sailors loved to personalize.

(Note: This guys a aircrew guy since he has formed the wings on his cover)

This is actor Tony Curtis. Notice his cover, you can tell he was a signalman by the way his cover is positioned.
(Note: He has his cover a little too far back, because it's a picture. He is flaunting that he's a signalman. He would never wear it that far back normally, but it would be further back compared to the other sailors)

  • Katze90210 (3/113)

As usual Craig very cool. Now you know you will need to post where you send it to so we can get our Sailor's done! Lol
  • Craig

So the military at San Antonio made out today.  Everyone got off early because the U.S. is doing so well in the Olympic by winning gold.  This is one of the benefits of the military, we work hard, and we play hard.

I bet all the sailors were happy today!

  • mkcmom

Helloo, I'm MKCMOM, (Tricia) and My son will be PIR on Aug 24, 2012 at GL then he will be headed to SA for A school as a hospital corpsman.  Glad to be here.  Really enjoy the N4M site and all the "groups".  Hope to learn more about the Corpsman jobs.  I have an older son who has been in the Navy for 9 years, he is a NUKE and stationed at Pearl in Hawaii.  He was on the USS Louisville and the USS LaJolla, and my daugter-in-law is INTEL and was on the USS RONALD REAGAN.  I'm a very PROUD NAVY MOM!

  • Tjoes

Hello, I'm Tanja. My son's PIR is on 8-24, afterwards he'll go to A school in San Antonio. I'm very proud of my him.

  • stormy1123 ship 12 div 203

Welcome Tanja and and Tricia! I am fairly new to this group too. My son graduated 6/29 and went to SA for his A school, which actually just started a week ago.

  • DramaSoul

Craig....I love the info on the covers! I learned about the Dixie cup from my former husband's uncle who had been in the Navy in WW II.

You are rockin' that jaunty angle!

  • DramaSoul

    txbabydocmom....so what is a '59'?

  • Madeline

And the adventure begins...my sailor landed in San Antonio a few hours ago to start A school as a Corpsman. SO SO SO excited for him and looking forward to hearing how it is. He arrived today 8/4 but school doesn't begin until 8/13. I was wondering if anyone had information or knowledge about how the different phases of liberty worked. I know they have to earn it but am not sure. I was hoping to visit and wanted to have some time frames!!!

  • Britt<3Corpsman Wife

Madeline- my husband PIR'd 7/6 and just got phase 3 this weekend. He also didn't start classes til this past Wednesday. I would definitely count on him being held for 3 to 4 weeks before classes begin. Your sailor will have an idea of what his phase schedule will be in a week or two.
  • Madeline

Hi Britt- thanks for the info. I have already heard from another corpsman girlfriend that he heard it might be a week or two longer than they thought until they start. It is going to take some getting used to, not being able to have a plan for visiting and what not. I was hoping to fly down for Labor Day weekend but sounding like theres a good chance they wouldn't have liberty then if they don't start for a bit

  • Britt<3Corpsman Wife

I planned my first visit for 6 weeks after he arrived there. And I also planned for an extended visit. I will be there August 16 thru 27th. I figured that way its at least two weekends together and just in case he has duty/watch we won't be upset about missing that time together. I'm just glad they are doing pharmacology the week I am there! He was a pharmacy tech for a very long time before he joined the Navy so he won't need to worry about studying a lot that week :) and don't be disappointed if his start date for school changes or the dates he is supposed to phase up change. It happens, its just the life of the Navy! And I hear they have Friday, Sat, Sun and Monday off for Labor Day weekend. He should be phased up by then and be able to stay with you over the weekend if you go visit.
  • Teach

Even on phase 1 they can leave the base, they just have to remain in uniform and have a curfew. My son arrived on Sat, Apr 14. The following weekend my relatives that live in the area picked him up on Sat and took him out then picked him up again on Sunday for church.
  • Craig

    A question for you ladies.

My daughter said that all the sailors have to sign out on liberty.  She said that these guys will salute "something" and request permission to go ashore.  I told her that's normal on a ship that you salute the OOD (Officer of the Deck).  She said she didn't think they saluted a person, but an object.

So, what are they actually saluting? A person or an object.  If it's an object, what is it?

  • Britt<3Corpsman Wife

Craig- my husband said its the sailor who is standing watch at that time. They are usually dressed in their dress uniform. He said they salute the quarter deck watch and the flag and ask permission to enter or leave the building. They also scan their ID's in and out when they leave the building. They didn't scan my husbands roommates ID correctly one day last week and came knocking on their door well after midnight because they didn't think he had come back.
  • BrigitteJ

Any ideas on where we can pick up our sailor? I hate for him to catch a taxi just to meet us.
  • Craig

Britt -- Thanks, I totally forgot about the flag since they are indoors.  I didn't realize they actually scanned their CAC cards.  My daughter said the Navy is really hard core on the sailors compared to the Air Force.

She said something weird that I found strange.  She said that the Navy guys had to wear reflective armbands if they leave the building on Friday night.  Even if they want to go just outside the door?  Only on Fridays?

Brigitte - What do you mean pick up?  Like at the airport?  If so, it is extremely cheap to rent a car at the airport.  It's about $12 per day which equals $20 when you add taxes.  Just call him once you get close to the front gate then he can sign you in.  When you drop him off, you will go to the area between the barracks and the fire station.  This is also were the taxi wait like vultures for the sailors.

  • Teach

You can go to the Walters gate and they will let you on base. Adults have to show drivers license. Ask for directions to taxi stand. It is close to the barracks and easy to find. Our son walked there the first time then showed us the parking lot by his building when we took him back.
  • BrigitteJ

@Craig, On base. We are visiting for graduation. Any advice on graduation day?
