I really wish I had thought to ask your experiences earlier!  LOL

I had my heart set on his being only 6 hours from home.  But he'll be less than 12, so that beats many of the other options!  :-)  I am so grateful for this group - you continue to help me so much!!!

  • PacNWmom

My son will finish prototype in the next couple of months and will be moving to San Diego, to the Teddy Roosevelt, his first choice. He wanted San Diego because his wife wants to go to college there. I'm excited because it's in the same time zone, and I've never been to San Diego. B's Nuke, maybe I'll get to meet you one of these days!

  • joe-mom

PacNWmom - Congrats to your son on getting his first choice! Never been to San Diego but have heard wonderful things.

  • Northwoodsmom

PacNWmom, my son is on that ship when it is out to sea but stationed in Virginia Beach. He is in Aviation and when the ship is out they just fly there and go on board. Good luck to your son.
  • MomofJoseph

PacNWmom, is your son graduating in Sept?  Maybe he and my son are in prototype together?

  • Chipmunk

PacNWmom - Congratulations to your sailor!!! I sent you a PM.

  • Chipmunk

MomofJoseph - A 12-hour trip can still happen in one day if you really want to do so. It is definitely not as easy as a 6-hour drive and it depends on the route and the traffic. We live in the Midwest, so no matter which coast or overseas, my son/ kids are at least a very long 2-day drive, or 1 day flight depending on layovers. I do not like living so far away from my kids. Both sets, who do not live nearby, are more than 6 hours away, so I feel your pain! And worse, that is where my grandbabies are located at as well!

  • MomofJoseph

Chipmunk - yes, we can do a 12-hour trip, and I am so grateful it's not a long 2-day (or more) drive.  I know that has to be difficult to have your grandkids so far away!  Maybe sometime soon they can be closer!

  • AP's*nuke*mom*

Good afternoon ladies… I have a question I bought a nuke mom key chain and nuke mom sticker from someone on here in 2021 and I just trained my truck in and want another nuke mom with the flag for my new car… does anyone know who sales them

  • JNMnavymomOH

Hello!! Spoke with my Nuke today.  Another student is teaching him and a few others how to drive (YAH!!) a manual shift.  We were talking about his dream list, because I figured he might have his soft orders by the end of the year.  He asked for Japan and then San Diego (does not want Norfolk) and the new Ford class of carriers.  I know it is the needs of the Navy, but I am kind of torn between them.  I want him to go to Japan as that is his dream, but I want SD so I can be there for deployment and return home activities. He also told me that NY is planning to reopen for Prototype students sometime in 2024.  More than halfway thru PS, it is really starting to get real.  He is doing so well, he usually lets me know what his test scores are.  He is maintaining a nice GPA.  Otherwise, he studies and plays video games.   On a side note, I will be going down for the Thanksgiving holiday.  I will be cooking and feeding sailors all weekend.  If you wanted to keep that in your mind :)

    Have a great week!!

  • Chipmunk

    MomofJoseph - Thank you!

AP's*nuke*mom* - You might be able to do a search on this site or have you tried a Google Search. I am sorry but I do not know of anyone who sells those items.

JNMnavymomOH - If I am reading your son's preferences correctly, He does not want to be stationed in Norfolk, but he wants to be assigned to the new Ford class of carriers. FYI, the USS Gerald R Ford (CVN - 78) and the other Ford class carriers are stationed in Norfolk, VA. There have been rumors  otherwise, but I do not believe they are going to move the Ford class carriers

  • joe-mom

JNMnavymomOH - Just curious... does your son already know when he'll start Prototype? Mine graduates PS the same day as yours, but he hasn't heard anything concrete about Prototype yet - or, at least, he's not sharing! How nice of you to treat all those sailors to a good meal.

  • JNMnavymomOH

MomofJoseph - I think he heard the possibility of a ford class being moved to Japan.  Something about that ship coming back to the states, maybe. I know he said that the new one (just launched) has AC in the engine area. He heard from an instructor that the traffic is horrible at Norfolk.  Something like several hours long to get into the base.

joe-mom - I believe that they will get 10 days leave or something like that, but no official starting of Prototype yet.  I don't think it is too far from PS though.

  • The Hammer

MomofJoseph - Your post caught my attention with “air condo” in the engine room. That would be wonderful indeed! When my son is out “fishing”, it is typical that he comes back 20-30lbs lighter. It’s the combo of the work/heat and the fact that you can’t Door Dash to the sub!

  • Northwoodsmom

JNMnavymomOH, definitely agree with the traffic in Norfolk. Our first day there we spent 3 hours in a traffic jam because two of the tunnels were down because of accidents. The next morning we heard warning to stay away from one of the tunnels again because it was backed up again. Very frustrating.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Hi all - Happy Tuesday.  Sorry I've been MIA - had a lot going on.  We went to Washington last week for my dad's celebration of life - had it on 8/5 which would have been his 85th birthday. It went well and we had a great time.  Got to see B but C and the baby weren't able to make it.  Came home on Monday (8/7) and then my mom had a stroke on 8/9 so I've been dealing with that.  She lives alone (she and my dad divorced when i was like 3 years old).  She was in the hospital and she's doing better but the dr said for 7 days she needs someone with her 24/7 so we brought her to our house. She's getting better - it could have been way worse than what is was but it's still an adjustment figuring everything out.  So I'm trying to get/keep caught up at work and trying to get/keep caught up with my moms appointments so I've neglected N4M.

PacNWmom - I am always up for meeting Navy moms in San Diego.  You let me know when you are visiting and we will make it happen!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Nice to hear that things might be opening back up in Ballston Spa.  B did prototype there and really loved the area.  We were lucky to visit 2 times and enjoyed it too.

  • Chipmunk

B'sNukeMom - I am so sorry to hear about all that has been going on for you. I had forgotten about your father's service.

  • TallyMom

My son is on an Ohio-class nuclear submarine and I was able to do a Tiger Cruise! I was on the boat with him and all the crew (plus 45 other moms, dads, and wives) for a couple of days underway! If you ever get the chance to do this - DO IT! I highly recommend. What an awesome experience.

  • Pizanche

B’sNukeMom - my thoughts are with you!! Hope all goes well

  • joe-mom

B'sNukeMom - Sorry to hear about your mom. Prayers for a full recovery. Glad your dad's service went well.

TallyMom - That sounds amazing! Do all sub classes offer tiger cruises?

  • TallyMom

I am not sure if all submarines offer the Tiger Cruise. This submarine has males and females aboard. And since it's the biggest sub, there was room for all of us. They also take on Midshipmen visits. Also fun for me, my son's girlfriend is on the same submarine, so I got to see her, too!

  • AmeliaJW3665

Hopefully when the uss Tennessee gets back they will have that option. My husband would love to do it

    Oli had his 3 month check-up yesterday.  He's 16lb 9oz and 26.25" long - he gained 2 pounds in a month!

  • Chipmunk

TallyMom - I am so glad you were able to experience a Tiger Cruise! That sounds amazing.

B'sNukeMom - Oli sounds like he is growing and growing. My little one is pulling himself up and standing at the kitchen cabinets and started climbing their stairs!

I believe we have some new members - Welcome!!. I know B'sNukeMom has been swamped with things and I have been busy as well with some family matters also, so I haven't been able to be on as much lately.

  • John and Yvonne

    Hello to all you Moms!

We just joined this group. My husband and I have been here in Virginia Beach, VA. for the last 23 years. We have a ministry to the Sailors stationed here(and of course Soldiers and Marines) :)

We open our home on the weekends and invite them into our home. We feed them, play board games, watch movies, sometimes go on short trips, and if they are here on the holidays we invite them to join us to celebrate! If you want to know more about us, go to our page on this site and you will get a better idea of what we do. :)

  • Chipmunk

    John and Yvonne - Welcome!!

For anyone with family in the Virginia Beach, VA area, I encourage you to check out their page and make connections with them. They have hosted my sailor and been friends with me on this site, and a friend to my sailor and his wife, when I can't always be there.

  • Chipmunk

I wanted to welcome a new member. I know B'sNukeMom has had a lot going on and I am behind and playing catch up as well.

Shelli - Welcome to the Nuke Moms group. I believe your loved one is heading off to BC soon. Be sure to come say hello both in that group and here. The BC group is the best place to ask your information about BC, but I was going to share this discussion of mine with you, so if you had time to share with your loved one before they left you could - Nuke A school daily schedule - sailor's perspective - Navy For Moms...

Wishing the best for all those on the west coast B'sNukeMoM. Praying that you are safe and well. I'm sorry this has been a rough month for you , lots of hugs coming your way.

Good Morning Wednesday Pictures, Photos, and Images for Facebook ...

Hi all - Happy Wednesday!  We survived the storm.  Lots of wind and rain but nothing too serious in our area.  Just about an hour away though near Palm Desert they got hit pretty hard.  Lots of flooding and mud....they are still trying to dig out from everything.

My mom is getting better - going to take time, and of course we are STILL waiting for her physical and occupational therapists to come out.  It's kind of like the Navy - Hurry up and wait!

My youngest turned 29 yesterday!  Not sure how that happened lol!  He's getting married in March so we have that to look forward to.  Our escrow closed on a condo in MI so now we are looking for a tenant to rent until we decide to make the move there - won't be for a few years at least. Lots going on and I'll try to get caught up with everything here soon.

1st underway for my sailor! He is nervous and I did my best to be upbeat and positive. I am so glad he called to share with me, and I got to hear his voice. I am hoping this becomes easier with time

  • Chipmunk

Pizanche - may your sailor have "Fair Winds and Following Seas!"  My son went out on many underways during his service time. Our kids are the first on and last off the ship depending on their watch bill. Mine would come back into port and be able to call home, but generally had to stay and work, even if liberty was called.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Pizanche - I don't know that it ever gets easier but you will get stronger!  Hang in there!

  • Pizanche

Chipmunk - thank you. My sailor is on a boat and I know this will be the 1st of a few.

B’sNukeMoM - thank you. time is a great healer.

Was just reading the news about Idalia and my thoughts wandered back to when my sailor was in GC. He evacuated twice for Hurricanes. Hope that all of our sailors are safe!

  • NucMomTami

Is there an average time the sailors fly out to South Carolina on Saturday after graduation? Or is it different all the time? Just trying to figure out our returning flight time for that Saturday.
  • Pizanche

NucMomTami - each class is different. My sailor had to be back on base by 8pm on the Friday and flew out very early Sat. Your Sailor will have the most up to date info

  • G'sNavyMom

When do Sailor's usually get their orders for after BC?

  • MomofJoseph

NucMomTami - my son graduated the day before Thanksgiving.  They were given Thanksgiving day with Families and some of his friends flew out on Friday and Saturday.  But all of the Nukes flew out on Tuesday of the following week..  (We had driven to BC, so we were able to stay until Sunday to visit with him.)

  • MomofJoseph

B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet) - Good morning!  I have a question for you.  In July, you posted the schedule for Prototype graduation 2206.  Can you direct me to where you found that info?  My son is graduating next week and he still hasn't sent us the schedule, and I haven't been able to find it online.  I appreciate any help you can give.

  • Chipmunk

Good Morning / Afternoon everyone -

My apologies, I have been dealing with a lot of family things, and I believe that B'sNukemom is also out of the loop for a bit with the same.

NucMomTami and G'sNavyMom - Generally your sailor should have their orders right before PIR, but that is not always the case. As for flight times, that varies depending on what flights the Navy procures for the best rates.  - Welcome to Navy life, you really will not know possibly until you are at PIR, or even afterwards. That is why with those flying in and out, we recommend that if possible, you give yourself an extra day for travel. We drove, just because we wanted that flexibility, and it was nothing like I thought it would be.  - Be sure to read my discussion on the BC group - What PIR weekend may be like for those flying out of GL - Navy For ...

  • Chipmunk

MomofJoseph - see if you can glean some information from the Prototype FB group?  -

Also here are links to a few discussions on this group page. Read through them for clues. I am sorry.

Do you by chance save any of your email feeds from the groups here. If so, you might be able to do a search in your email from B'sNukeMom. - It most likely would have been an attachment and I try to delete my attachments as much as possible, so I am not finding it. The other thing is to go to the bottom of the page here and skip through the comments until you find ones around July.
