Welcome!.. We are the Cryptology group! We are committed to helping the sailors and family members of "Spooks". Spooks are what sailors call the CTI, CTN, CTT, CTR, CTM in the fleet. Come join the gang!
And the newest rating - CWT - Cyber Warfare Technician.
WandaG
Hi Everyone, I'm new to this group. My daughter is considering going CTT. She is also interested in MC but wants to look into CTT more before she decides which will be her first choice. Hopefully she will be going to MEPS next week to select her rating and swear in.
Lady Hamilton, what do you mean by rating conversion?

Craig
Navymom - This is all unclassified:
The 4 year & 6 year CTT's do the ELectronic INTelligence (ELINT). The 4 year CTT's are the operators, while the 6 years are the technical who do the Technical. The 6 year CTT's have a excellent knowledge of electronics, and electronic signals. Think of it like a MRI. You have guys operating the MRI, and you have guys repairing the MRI.
We use to have a rating called Electronic Warfare (EW), however, the Navy got rid of that rating and combined them with CTT's about 10 years ago. The CTT that are 6 years (ie the technical) performs preventive and corrective maintenance on this system called the AN/SLQ-32 system which is used for Deceptive Electronic Countermeasures (DECM). Which means they will be on ships alot. They are electronic guru's. To maintain something you also have to know how it operates. So the technicals have the best of both worlds, they have to know how to operator and repair it, but they have to enlist 6 years to get it because of the long traing pipeline.

Lady - Let's face it, your daughter is truly is already a spook. When the Navy combined the old CTA rating with the YN, they all became YN's. But since she probably already has the SSBI clearance, she's alread a spook at heart. So she will be a walk in at Corry. She will wait no time getting into the training pipeline quickly.

Wanda - Here is the link to the last advancment opportunities. CTT up to the E5 level were 100%, but on the last cycle it was 39.74% because so many people were advanced the time before. This number will go up alot since CTT's are needed because of what is happening in our world now. Intel is where the government will dump alot of money into. Too many CTT's know that they can make alot more money in the civilian world, that the advancement opportunity will remain high.
Unlike MC which never had great odds. Your daughter will be almost like Lady daughter. MC is an overmanned rating, and it will be hard to advance in, which means cross rating or get out.

Craig, thanks for sharing your input. That is very interesting on the latest with CTT. I will be sure to share all this information with my daughter. You are a wealth of information. Thank you so much :o)

Lady - Corry is basically only for the sailors fresh out of boot camp. They try to keep the fleet returnies away for them since fleet sailors are a different breed. We would corrupt them...Heck we corrupt ourselves!
So she would more than likely stay at the Gateway Inn located on NAS Pensacola. It's a really nice place and her per diem will cover the whole amount. She doesn't even need a Certificate of Non-Availability (CNA). They have 1100 rooms, yea, I said Eleven Hundred. Even though they have lots of rooms, she would be smart to go ahead and book a room reservation, and as the time comes closer she can just move the dates around. If she doesn't have a car, then they have a shuttle going back and forth.
The link to the Gateway Inn is www.dodlodging.net Just click on NAS Pensacola.

glassdog - The CAC card reader should had the software in it. He should actually take it back to the NEX and say it didn't have the software. Maybe then, the NEX will order the correct CAC card readers that works out of the box.
Here is the link where I bought my nephews CAC card reader (Smart Card Reader). I bought the cheap $19.99 one and it works awesome...
http://www.microcenter.com/search/search_results.phtml?Ntt=smart+ca...
He needs to read this article which was recently in the Navy-Times. I guess this guy runs a help desk for those having trouble with their CAC card readers. My nephew said it was so easy to connect up, but what is easy for some, may be hard for others. It's funny, because the guys an Army guy, but I guess the Navy thought it was so good that they wrote about it....
Here's the article, and the website listed is www.militarycac.com

decarp - Since you have a CTR sailor, this is a really good read. To make Chief (E7) in less than 6 years is unheard of. Chief Cryptologic Technician (Collection) (SW/AW) (sel) Joe Lemanek is a CTR, and he did it. All I can say is wow!. I just looked him up in the locater and he is now a Lt Commander (O5). That is quick!

mumzie - You know, the NEX just ticks me off. They always buy stuff that doesn't meet the needs of the sailors. It's almost like they look for the lowest bidder just to get a profit.
Just like computers. The NEX cannot compete with Best Buy. Best Buy sells sooo many computers and they always have the newest stock. Plus they sell cheap Acers or Dells that a normal sailor can afford. But the dang NEX sells HP and Compaq computer that cost sooo much. People think they are getting a great deal since you don't have to pay tax at the NEX, however, when you compare the price at Best Buy it's cheaper even though you pay the tax.

Lady Hamilton,
My twins sons are in A school for CTR and their class has about 16 with only the two of them being straight out of bootcamp. The others in the class are fleet returnees and Army. But their roommate is out of bootcamp and newer than they are. Just their experience with Corry FWIW.

Chimelle :
My son is finished up CORE and is now on Hold too- He told me it could be a few weeks, but I do believe they must wait for the security clearance to finalize and for the amount that is in a class to be full, before class starts...Those two things from what I have been told. I was visited by the OPM, federal Investigator the night before I left for PIR -.
May 10, 2011
NavyMom4J
also- my Federal Investigator told me I was the last one and the papers would be turned in that week (of PIR) so I think it is not just the data gathering, but the full pass on the whole thing that gets turned in. Please if anyone knows more, I would appreciate you chimming in here too!
J said it could get really boring waiting for classing up.

Outstanding Angie!!! That is awesome...
Wow, the Michelle Obama thing... SInce I'm very pro-military, and very pro-America. I think if it were me I'd say:
"My son is in the military. He has always been proud of being an American, and proud to come from a military family. I too, am proud to be a military mom, and have always been proud to be an American. Why weren't you proud to be an American before last year?
But I know I would be excorted out of there real quick.
(sorry guys, this isn't meant to be a polical bashing statement. I truly would like to know. I remember being 6 years old and being a proud American... I'm Red, White, and Blue to the core)

That said, I am not sure I would say those particular things to her at that particular function. Time and place. I just don't know what I would have to say to her - I have absolutely no respect for her. I guess I would just go in honor of all of the mothers that you represent. That is quite and honor, Angie!

I read the speech (can't do youtube at work) and can't imagine what people are taking offense at?
From the speech-And finally, we know that the needs of our military families are only going to grow. Our forces and their families face more deployments. That means more veterans needing care, especially those with post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury. It means more caregivers needing support. It means more survivors who can never be forgotten.
As America asks more of these families, they have a right to expect more of us. This is our moral obligation.
It’s also a matter of national security. The readiness of our armed forces depends on the readiness of our military families.
So that’s the second part of our task -- ensuring that, as a nation, we have the capacity to support and engage our military families at every stage of their lives, over the long term. That requires going forward, together, with a shared vision of the future that our military families deserve.
Here today, we know what that future can look like. I know all of you do. We see an America where every soldier, sailor, airman, Marine and Coast Guardsman -- and woman -- can deploy knowing that their family will be taken care of. So instead of worrying about benefits and bureaucracy, our troops can focus on their mission, which is protecting our country.
As President, my husband and his administration have made military families a priority. They’ve increased pay and benefits and increased funds for military housing and childcare and counseling and career development for spouses. And the budget for next year would continue to strengthen military family support programs. They’ve extended the Family and Medical Leave Act to more military families and caregivers. And last week, my husband signed into law legislation that many of you fought for -- expanding veterans’ health care and giving unprecedented support to caretakers.

Does anyone know what the kids options are if they fail a test after being rolled back? My son is due to graduate from CTN school on 7/7. He just failed test #5 so now I'm worried that they will kick him out and he will have to go undes. Do they get a chance at other jobs? How many chances do they get - it seems like he's so close to finishing... Thanks for any insight.

Might have just seemed like I was trying to change the subject but I really do have a question - any insight is greatly appreciated.
Will they have the 4th of July off? It is a Monday holiday. How soon must son put in for a Chit to come home for the weekend? How long before he knows if he can - want to get plane reservations.

Clockard - Totally agree. I really shouldn't have posted that since it was one of those iffy subjects that people would confuse as politics. You are correct that that the Cryptology section is here to support our sailors.
Even though it wasn't meant to be polical (It doesn't matter what your last name is, I would have called out my own family member), but I can see why people would think it was.
I make mistakes just like everyone else.

mumzie - He needs to put in an "Out of Bounds" chit soon. He also needs to verify that he doesn't have duty over that weekend. If he does, he needs to do a duty swap with another sailor. If it were me, I would ask his LPO or Chief when they want to have the chits so he can make airline arrangements.
navymom - Great pic... Always good to see pictures of the CT's....
