An Underway question

Does anyone know what is an underway vs. a deployment. My son is getting ready to go on an underway for a month and he is very nervous and is not excited at all. My heart breaks for him. We stay positive and excited for the adventure, but when I get off the phone, I begin to cry. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.See More

Hi Jeniffer, I am keeping your comment to me private. I also sent you a friend request. Be sure to look up in your inbox here for it. I need to get busy with my day, but after you accept my friend request, then I can send you a private message with some other information which might be helpful for you and other loved ones. I may not be able to get back to you to later, but I will do my best.

Lack of communication is one of the number one things we deal with and part of why you have the "great silence" at BC - to prepare us and them for that as well.

Jeniffer - you may send a reply to this and I will moderate before posting. Is your sailor going sub or ships? Do you have the name of his ship/ boat?

Are there any specific concerns that he has shared with you?

Jeniffer - I saw you posted a message in the main room chat. I don't know if anyone replied to you and I am not certain of the answer.

Jeniffer

Hi everyone...another question for you lovely ladies...My son I am assuming has arrived at RTC out of his first quarantine...and beginning his journey..I know P days for sat and sun are hold days but do I keep counting today as day 15, tomorrow 16, friday 17 and then sat sun as days 18, 19?

You might want to post this in the comment wall area of the BC Mom group. Honestly, more of the ladies see you question there than they do in the main room chat. - I am looking at BBH's timeline below and I am not sure about the weekends. I always leave those questions up to her to answer and she has some family stuff going on at the moment so may not post for several days.

I generally tell the new moms to expect their form letter between 4 - 5 weeks from when their SR left for GL. This has been the average with the new time frame for BC. I know how much you want to have an idea of what is going on with your recruit. Have you watched either of the two videos that are listed to the left here on this page. BC Making a sailor and BC Behind the scenes.

Hugs!

Welcome!! Please read my blog to give you an idea of what the first few weeks may look like.. First Things First-- The Quarantine Edition Up and to the Left is a link to all the Navy Lingo! It is titled Navy Speak and you can find it here. We are here to get you through the “Great Silence” of the next 4 weeks (ish) and the 10 weeks of BC (ish). You will come to learn that No News Is GOOD News and everything is Needs of the Navy. You life will be Hurry Up and Wait and it’s ok to make plans but they are subject to change until after they have happened so it’s best to embrace the Motto: Semper Gumby!! (Always Flexible!!)

The Expected timeline will look like this
Day 0 -- Travel, Arrival and "I'm Here" scripted phone call
Day 1-14 -- ROM (Restriction of Movement/ Quarantine-- Lots of studying and waiting)
Day 15-21 Arrive Onboard RTC and begin P-days (P-days- Initial Processing Days) including 2 days of P-hold (Weekend)
Day 21-- Complete P days. (Initial PFT & Run)
Day 22-- Begin training and mail form letter out. Look for it to arrive around 1-2 weeks later)
All of this is assuming no exposure to COVID with additional ROM
Training typically occurs Monday - Friday but we have heard rumors that Saturday’s are now training days as well.
Normal PIR will be 10 Fridays after departure from Home but it can be less by 1 but it can be extended by ???? (lots!!) It just depends on how many times they get caught in the “Ring of Fire” but do not get COVID. IF they get COVID, Once they are recovered they will not be removed from training again even if they are in the “Ring of Fire”. (so there is that small silver lining if kids get sick)
