Hey, I live in Mobile, Ala.  Not too familiar with the immediate area around the base but know the area pretty good!  Some people are staying at a resort just south of the Naval Base by a few minutes:  Called 'The Purple Parrot Resort"....it's near but not on the beach in Perdido Key, FLa.  The road that goes down to the beach on Perdido Key is very near the Alabama Line> goes into Orange Beach, Ala.  then into Gulf Shores 7 more miles to the east....there are lots of places to stay all along the beach.... I have dealt several times  for rentals through: Meyer Real Estate: www.MeyerRE.com & toll free call:  866-200-8652 they handle lots of places around Perdido Key & over in Ala. they are real good people & handle very nice places. You can ask them about the distance & time ...you can get an address and do www.mapquest.com and find out the distance/time, etc.   These areas are not very far away from the base and not hard to find!  The white sand beaches are very pretty.....  The Water in Destin is that pretty green look and are so, so extra special but Destin is a lot farther and the traffic is very heavy: it would probably be a long way to go,esp. if you are planning to be going back and forth often to the base....  The farther you get east of Pensacola toward Gulf Shores the water may not be as green because you are closer to Mobile Bay and the rivers that flow out into the gulf, the water is a little what we call "Brakish"...some fresh water mixed with the Gulf Salt Water, it's VERY clean, nice water & white sand, just not always the Green Water you see back to the east of P'cola.that's why the difference Orange Beach/Gulf Shores area is my favorite places to hang out, there's lots to do and the prices are cheaper than down in Destin...On the July 4th weekend it's the biggest  crowd  everywhere you are going , so make a reservation  ASAP. We love The Perdido Grande on Terry Cove right to the west of Perdido Bay, great condos!
