Was wondering if there are any mothers from Kansas? I live in Wichita and my daughter left for basic training about 13 days ago. I do have so many questions. But mostly are pertaining to my daughters happiness. We received her forum letter the other day and she wrote to us about how unhappy she is. I know its homesickness talking, but still heartbreaking none the less. She stated she wants to come home to us and misses us so much. Ugh this made us cry. I'm hoping thing will get better for her, and want to know if there is anything her father and I can do to make things a little more easier for her.

Keep writing and send her address out to as many friends & family so she will receive a lot of mail. Don't forget that you can send pictures to her. They really help a lot. Try not to cry on the phone when she calls, cause it only makes them more homesick, especially if she is just getting over her homesickness. If you can Hallmark has a nice selection of military cards. Most of the are very encouraging. I promise you, it will get better for all of you. Let me know how she is getting along & I will keep in touch with you. My son Ben's PIR 9/2/10. He is now at Fort Meade, MD. He's in A-school studying mass communications. He really likes being in the Navy. You won't believe how grown up she'll be the next time you see her. She's going to do great!!!

I'm actually a father of a Navy recruit. My wife and I joined Navy for Moms because it presented a great support group and information. I was born and raised in Wichita until I was 12 years old. I lived on the west side of town between Kellogg and Maple on a street called Meadowhaven right next to what we use to refer to as the "big ditch". I currently live in Georgia but feel a kinship with people from Wichita. Your daughter will be fine. It's kind of a blast of cold air when she got there, but by the end of it she will be a different (and better) person. She is part of a great group of people and she will meet people who she will remember the rest of her life. You will see a transformation as the weeks roll by, and they do go by pretty quick. I was amazed at how fast the time went. Keep writing her and encouraging her. On PIR day, you'll almost burst with pride. Good luck and may God bless you all.

I'm from Green Bay originally but moved to Wichita after high school. Lived there for 16 yrs., met my husband and moved him back to Green Bay. So we both know the area very well and have family there. We lived in Haysville, for many years. We just recently went back to visit and I was shocked at all the changes, it's growing! It was sooo hot there I could hardly stand it anymore. I don't think we will go back!! So we too have ties there! As for your daughter, write her often, encourage her more, if she feels that you are strong then she will be also. Tell her she is doing a wonderful service and to take pride in her work, everyone else is proud of her. Let her know after PIR it gets better and a she can have fun with friends and talk on the phone or computer. Good luck to your girl!
