Does anyone else find it crazy that the first leave day for our boys is in less than a month and they still don't have their slips saying when they can leave for sure. To me, that just sounds ridiculous because how are they suppose to know when they can come home for sure if they don't have their for sure day or not.
They don't pick up their leave papers until the morning they check out on leave. They do know beforehand whether their chit was approved or not; if they're in A school, it almost certainly is. With the thousands of chits going through right now, it takes a few weeks to process them all.
The way leave works in general is they submit the special request chit asking for leave dates. It goes up their chain of command and gets signed. They are usually informed if the leave dates are approved or not, and depending on how busy the folks are who sign the chits, it can take a day to a couple weeks to get a yes or no. If no, they're usually advised quickly, so they can request alternate dates. At Great Lakes, the student sailors pretty much know it is a yes and the dates are set for the stand down.
No, they do not work on the first day of approved leave. However, they do need to check out and pick up their leave papers. If you're referring to the holiday stand down at Great Lakes, there are thousands of sailors checking out that morning, this will take time to accomplish. That is why flights before noon are not recommended. They have close up some of the barracks, so some of them will be stowing their stuff so their room can be locked up, and this may involve a quick room inspection. Any of the training commands will be checking out a large number of student sailors, it will always take time.
If you are looking for a date and time answer when the chits come back, you aren't going to get it. Due to the unique situation and sheer volume of requests to be processed, there will be varying times different groups get their approval.
Okay, that makes a lot of sense. Thank you so very much!
